Identify Little Black Flies?
 

Somebody else posted something in here about flies, but this is different. We have these little black flies in our house, wingspan about 1/4". The weird thing about them is that when you squish them, and it's easy, cause they don't move real well, they leave a powdery black spot. And that's about it. Not gooey like a house fly, just a black smoodge on the wall. My wife and I call them "Sh1t Flies". Anyone know where they come from?

Could they be fruit flies? I end up with those in the summer, anytime an apple core or watermelon rind sits in the garbage for more than a few hours.

Yeah, sounds like fruit flies.

Fruit flies are generally a lot smaller than 1/4 of an inch -- but are quite slow moving - and are usually in swarms.

Nope, not a fruit fly. I see them at work, too. Oh well, i'll keep looking. Basically I want to know how many is one day's protein ration. J/K. Thanks for the help.

Maybe Fungus Gnat. I haven't found a website on the squishing properties of common insects yet. Well, I'm not sure I want to anyway.

The powdery spot makes me think moth rather than fly. Are the wings very round? If so, I think I know what you are talking about, but I have no idea what they are called.
