Flooding problems
 

My yard flood whenever we get a big rain. What do you suggest I do to drain the yard. The yard is fairly flat and no hills. I live in Va where the soil is more clay than dirt. Thanks.:confused:

you need to make some kind of drainage. here in louisianna we have ditches all over for the water to run into, va are you on a hill,in a valley? let us know.

no hill or valley. There once was a french drain through a series of yards, but obviously not working. We have a slight incline in the front of our house, however all the neighnors' yards drain into ours. This winter sucked.

maybe try the city.get them to clean it out? any place you could dig a small trench to let the water run off of you're prperty?

if there is no place for the water to go... it will pool up...you need to figure out a way to let the water out...

maybe talk to your neighbers about getting the french drain going again...

or another thought building up the low spots? not sure if it's possible in this case.

rent a ditch witch and install some new french drains. Make them deeper than normal and use a lot of extra gravel beneath the pipes.

Ever thought of installing a weeper system? I know your lot is flat but perhaps the grade changes at the end of your property. If that's the case you can dig a trench from the pooling area and use 3-4 inches of clear stone in the trench. Lay the weeper pipe and run it to the end of the lot where water can drain and cover the weeper with more stone. After that backfill the trench with the soil.

In case you don't know, weeping tile is basically a flexible 6" pipe with holes poked into it. It gathers ground water and coming in from the top and sides of the pipe and get water where you want it. It's a good solution most of the time.

On my property, I ended up having to drill 2 wells 4" diameter 10 foot deep w/ a hand auger and install a pump to transfer the water from my front yard "swimming pool" across my property to my neighbor's (just passing it along). I wired it up to turn on as soon as the water get to a certain height in the well.
After this rain storm we had last week here in Tennessee, my yard was pretty dry.
