How to build an brick outdoor grill...

I'm thinking about building an outdoor brick grill, so I have something for the 4th of July. How would you guys suggest I go about this? The best guide I was able to find right off was
here. Any suggestions, tips for me?

If you're going to make a simple one like they show, make sure that the bricks protrude at least 3 layers above the surface of the grill for wind shielding. I would also make the walls 2 bricks wide instead of the single brick configuration they show. If you really wanted to get creative you could also build a chimney for it.

Personally, I would make the base of the pit solid brick and do away with metal grate for the coals. It would give you better thermal stability for constant temperature at the cooking surface. It also eliminates coals falling through the grate and landing by your feet.

Make sure you get the right brick; I believe you want the same stuff that they use for fireplaces.

A proper foundation is extremely important, particularly since you're talking about fire. A solid concrete foundation, poured and leveled properly, will give you what you need.

Hit up the Home Depot and ask around for more tips; they have some great people there who really what know what they're talking about. You should also check there (and your local library) for more literature on the subject.

That should get you started. Google is your friend.

Don't watch that episode of the Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour where Lucy and Ethel try to build one ;)

Good luck!
