Flies...
 

Ok, so it's cooking hot outside so i leave my balcony door open and the next thing i know, i come home from work and there are flies in my house! Flying in a circle in my living room. This is killing me. How do i get rid of them? Is there an 'at home' remedy type thing, and i cannot shut my door, it's TOO HOT!

Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! :) Thanks:cool:

Close door
Buy flyswatter
Flail around room with flyswatter in hand
Hope to knock flies out with flyswatter
Buy a screen door

Simple. Open the door and let them out. :D No?

Well, down at the trailer park, we like to shoot 'em with a .22 rifle. Don't try to hit 'em in the air, though. Little buggers can turn on a dime. Wait'll they land...then blast 'em. Makes the trailer leak when it rains, though. Nothing a few old beer cans, a pair of tin snips and a rivet gun can't fix. :D No?

No A/C? No screen door on the balcony? Nothing'll beat a 79 cent plastic flyswatter.

i tried flailing around the room already, and i knocked over this fancy plate thing of my roommates and it broke... i feel horrible :( no more flailing for me :(

Flies are attracted to the smell of decaying or deceased things. Make a fly trap by using a container with a funnel placed in the opening. Put something like wine, honey, or whatnot in the container and put the funnel narrow-side down in the opening. Flies will fly in, but won't escape.

mix a little poison in with some honey or sugar water and leave a small cup of it out of reach of anyone who likes to drink random things. arsenic i believe should work for this.

In all seriousness, Can't you rig a screen door on that opening? I would.

Fly tape. We use it in our barns and it is by far the best way to catch the little buggers. A bowl of molasses works too.

Not to get too far off subject.

What would work good to keep those damned flies off my german shepherd. In the summer time they land on her ears and start chewing away until they've left a pretty raw open wound.

Flypaper dog collar?
Give your dog a pet spider?

Maybe your vet (or the lovely and talented *nikki*) can suggest a dog-safe insect repellent.

wow this is exactly the same problem i'm having here in los angeles...for some reason, our apartment complex doesn't fit the windows with screens?? coming from the east coast, I simply cannot understand that.

in any case, I like the idea of the funnel trap..I'm goingn to try it, thanks!

I've also heard that filling clear plasic bags up with water and hanging them up deters flies from coming around. Don't know if it works but I have seen some restaraunt businesses that have outside seating have that kind of stuff going on.

I was just going to suggest something like this...

I have a fruit fly problem... I put a piece of fruit in a small dish and covered the dish with some plastic wrap. Poked some holes in the wrap with a toothpick and viola... fruit fly trap.

The flys crawl in the holes but can't fly out. No more fruit flies.

I just made 3 different homemade fly traps recently. The best was a jar with sugar and vinegar mix inside, with holes in the lid. I had to keep making the holes larger until the flies finally started to go inside them. The holes ended up to be about twice as large as a fly. Once they were large enough, I was catching about 10 flies an hour.

Wow those are really great ideas..Im going to try the fly in jar thing. I dont get a lot, but its better than finding dried flies in the window sill and other odd places.

When I've had dogs, I find a garlic supplement works wonders to keep the bugs from biting.

It works for people too :)

If you don't want to blow holes in the side of your trailer :p here are my plans for the improved flyswatter, or as I like to call it 'fly slapper'.

Its a stick with a rubber band attached to one end, and a clothespeg to the other. You stretch the rubber band and slot it into the clothespeg.

Aim at fly, press clothespeg, see fly die.

Some points:
- In the picture the stick is about 3ft (1 meter) long. I've used ordinary rubber bands (so not the thick ones). I knotted several of them toghether to get the necessary length.
- You can attach the long rubber band to the stick by using an eye hook, or another rubber band which you wrap around the stick and the long rubber band.
- You can attach the clothespeg the same way. Make sure the clothespeg is of the type with a hinge and a spring.
- If the long rubber band keeps slipping out of the clothespeg, or the trigger pressure is too little, wrap another rubber band around the clothespeg to provide more pressure on the clothespeg.
