Florida: formerly a part of Africa?

My geology professor, during a lecture about plate tectonics, said that Florida was attached to Africa before breaking off and attaching to North America. Of course, all the continents were parts of Pangea at one point, but AFTER breaking up into Gondwanaland and Laurasia, was Florida a part of the former, and then broke off and attached to the latter?

Wouldnt there be huge mountains around Georgia/ North Florida?

Then again, maybe it just connected to north America, hence all the flat lowlands.

I am not sure how it happened, but there is a very obvious switch from Georgia red clay into sandy Florida soil.
