AIR CONDITIONER TROUBLE

My air conditioner isn't cooling. I have an American Standard (Trane) heat pump/air conditioner. It's almost 3 years old. About 2 years ago I put a programmable thermostat on it. Everything has been fine until last night when I tried the air. It seems like it's running in "heat" mode. I changed the selector to a/c but it didn't come on. When I checked the breaker, it had popped. After I reset the breaker, the air came on but it's not cooling. The air coming out of the "compressor/condenser/whatever outside" is cold but what's coming out of the vents is very warm (warmer than outside and inside air). My wife is almost 8 months pregnant, if I don't figure this out soon, she's a gonna kill me.

Call a service tech. In your situation, with the Mrs. w/ child, just pony up the dough and have it fixed.

Without looking at it, I'm guessing that you're low on coolant (freon). A good way to tell is if the fittings coming out of the compressor are frosted over. If they are, then you're more like as not, low on gas. A simple recharge will take care of it.

Thanks for the replies. I got it checked out last night. The reversing valve is stuck and needs replaced. I think it's absurd that it's gone bad already. It'll cost around $800. My warranty only covered for 1 year.

Call up the manufacturer and bitch. Bitch loud and long! For a three year old unit to go sideways like that is nonsense. Sometimes, the mfr will eat part or all of the charges just to make you go away, and even if they tell you to piss off, you still have the satisfaction of having voiced your gripe.

You'd be surprised at what happens in response to a well written letter of complaint. Good luck.
