Register for voting

I registered to vote at the DMV but I have heard people say they are "Registered Democrat" but how do you register for a specific party (the Independent party).

When you register to vote, there are check boxes on the form so you can declare your party affiliation. Or at least there are in the state of Oklahoma. Not sure if those forms have federal standards or not.

The only time it really matters what party you are registered under, is when it comes to voting in primaries. Some states, not a clue which, you don't need to be a registered Democrat to vote in the primary.

Congratulations on registering to vote. Don't forget to actually excercise that right.

In most states you cannot register as an independent. They call it "decline to state". But if you do that you cannot vote in primaries, only final elections.

Should this be moved to Politics?

In CT, you can check off "no party registration" and vote in Democratic primaries.

There was nothing to fill out, when I went to DMV a while ago, she asked "Do you want to register to vote?" I said sure, she clicked something on her screen and that was it.
