How do you whistle really loud?

My whistling sucks! Not that it's a very important skill, but it would really help if I could whistle loudly to get my dog's attention when she's outside. Usually when I see someone whistle really loud, they put two fingers into their mouth. Is the sound coming from the tongue, lips, or fingers? Can anyone describe the mechanics of that kind of whistle?

you have to put your fingers under the tip of your tongue and then blow. try diffrent angles till the air comes out as whistle, it is a bit difficult, but carry on trying, you'll get there. when you manage to whistle with your fingers you can try tinny variations to produce high-pitched sounds.

very very carefully :)

I think it has to do with the way the tongue is situated, more than anything having to do with your fingers. I do the same thing without my fingers, and the placement of my tongue is similar to what it would be if I had my fingers in there. Try both ways and see what works.

My fingers are on the top of my tongue meeting a bit behind the tip. I was bored at an Astros game and stuck my fingers in my mouth and blew. I messed around until it worked, taking time out to get un-dizzy.

I wish I could do it with no fingers though. I haven't figured that one out yet.

I'll work on it. Thanks all for the info!

It takes a lil more messing around to get it with no fingers. Although both methods are loud and pretty much the same, they do produce different sounding whistles.

Oh, btw...go Stros!

The sound will come off or your tounge which should be pressed with you fingers up to your palet. Takes pratice

How do you blow? I assume it's not the same kind of blowing that you do to cool your soup, right? I've never been able to figure out how to whistle either. Is it like making the 's' sound? Like a hiss? I'm stumped :(

agball 03-26-2004 07:56 AM

Its kind of hard to explain without seeing , but if your tounge & fingers are place properly there will be some air friction & the wind should travel off the tip of your tounge where it is touching your palet to make the sound. Air will also travel around the sides of your tounge. When I learned how to do it I used my thumb & middle finger on one hand to do it. Once learned I can now do it with both ponter fingers, and pointer and middle fingers (the 4 finger Technique).

Take a rest though, you are probably feeling a bit light headed by now

Yeah, I put my tongue in the very back of my mouth. Make it realllly arched so that you almost have no airflow. Kinda put your top lip over you bottom lip, so you're blowing down. You should be able to blow for a good 4 seconds at full throttle, if you're lasting longer then your lips are too close together. Curl your lips in over your teeth, like grandma, then use your middle and thumb. Start with them touching eachtoerh and the front of your tongue, slowly move them apart until you hear some resonance. That's where you want them to be around. Now, clean up the spit and try again. I can whistle louder than any rape whistle on the market and I'm damn proud. If you need any more advice shoot me a message. It took me a month to learn by myself, so be patient. Ive taught some people in as little as 5 minutes.

Thanks for the detailed description. I'll try it tonight. I've found it's best not to practice whistling at work. :D

I want to learn how to do so without fingers. Don't need slimy saliva fingers after calling someone. My phys ed teacher was able to do that really well.

My technique is to take your middle finger and thumb and make a "circle" with them, leaving a gap about a centimeter across. Then put your fingers in your mouth to the depth of your teeth, pushing your lips over your teeth as you do so. Then place your tongue on your fingers (it should touch your fingernails and go in the gap a bit. Then imagine how your tongue would look if you made the front hard and flat, like a bar across your fingertips (horizontal). Then blow! It helps me to picture the air going Below the tongue and through the gap.

I hope this helps anyone that wants to whistle loud!

Onece you learn to do it with fingers it's not too hard to do it without them. The tounge position is very similar regardless if you're using two, four or no fingers.
