Off the top of my head, here are some topics that I would find interesting in a 5 minute talk.

American Economic Imperialism
Free Trade - boon or bane?
Globalization and its effects on emerging economies
Mass communication and its effects on emerging economies
Free Trade Areas - The EU vs NAFTA
"Reaganomics" and its part in the winning of the Cold War
The role of coffee on the world economies
Supply & Demands - India and the loss of software development jobs
The Economy (big E) and the Internet

By the way, if you're stuyding economics you most likely have read the following books. If not, I highly recommend them. They're not boring and are extremely educational, engaging and eye-opening.

Guns, Germs & Steel - Jarred Diamond
The Wealth & Poverty of Nations - David Landes

I'd be interested to hear more about the recent proposals to reclassify certain service sector jobs (including cooking at fast food restaraunts) as manufacturing jobs.

If you have time, check out this month's Wired magazine. It has an article on just this topic.

Here's a link to the web-version: http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/12.02/india.html

Discuss the idea of labor units as being universally interchangable. This is a basic assumption of microeconomics. It is, of course, wrong. I am not interchangable with you. So how do economists reconcile this idea and how do they take into account that one worker is not the same as another?
