pellet stoves

Anybody here have a wood pellet stove?

If so, what brand do you have? Is it free standing or a fireplace insert?

Do you like it and would you buy it again?

Thanks

I've got a wood stove but looked into going the pellet route since my cousin and her husband swear by theirs. Their's is a freestanding but I'm not sure of the brand/model. The reason I stuck with a wood stove is that I don't like being dependent on pellet manufacturers. I know I will always be able to get firewood. I can have it delivered, cut it myself, etc. Pellets you have to buy forever and I just don't like being locked into using them.

Just my .02.

I've got both a free standing and an insert.

Insert is from Earth Stove, now owed by Lennox. The free standing is a Whitfield.

Both are awesome and reduce my winter heating by better then half. I wouldn't trade them for anything, hope that pellets continue to be widely available, and would replace one if it needed replacement.

I spent four years splitting trees to burn in a wood stove, and that experience under my belt, I am happy to evolve to the pellet stove.

One draw back people often over look is that a pellet stove WILL NOT work during a power outage. They need electricity to operate the blower and feed auger. Any emergency type generator will do the trick in a pinch.

I am a big fan, have a bunch of experience, having burned, fixed and installed many different types of pellet stoves, and HIGHLY recommend them to anyone considering it.

Thanks for your replies. I'm looking at the Quadra-Fire and Harman inserts. I personally like the Harmans better, as they seem better constructed but my wife likes the looks of the Quadra-Fire better. We have a generator, so in a pinch we can run the stove off that.

I work for a place that delivers wood pellets. In my opinion, Id rather just burn wood.

But it is a fairly convienient alternative to oil if you dont live in the sticks like I do.

On the bag they advertise one 40 lb bag being equal to 2 and a half gallons of heating oil.

Take that as you will, for its the extent of my expirience.

I had a pellet stove but traded it in against a regular wood stove.
Cutting and splitting wood is something I've always enjoyed. It's been 11 years and I'd never get a pellet stove again.
