Dry Ice Bombs
 

In the interest of not hijacking Chug's Water Rocket thread:

That reminds me -- Anyone ever make dry ice bombs? I've talked to loads of ppl who've never heard of it but we used to do it all the time. In "these uncertain times" you might get a lot more attention from the local police and concerned neighbors, but back in the day we'd go to the ice cream store, get a few pounds of dry ice, and have a blast (pun intended :D) with 2-liters!!!

Note that this can be DANGEROUS and you should be very careful when doing this!!! Get the hell away from the thing once you make it. I sure wouldn't want anyone to get hurt. And NEVER use glass containers or anything else -- only use plastic soda bottles!!


Now that that's out of the way here's how to have some good clean fun. What you need is several pounds of dry ice which you can get at any place that makes ice cream. You also need an icepick or brick or something else to break up the ice into chunks, gloves (dry ice can burn you!), water, plastic 2-liter soda bottles with caps, and an airgun.

Break up the dry ice into chunks and jam them into the soda bottle. Use gloves. When the bottom if the bottle is covered pretty well, (a few inches maybe) pour some water in, no more than 1/4 - 1/2 way, screw the cap on *tight* and RUN!! The water melts the dry ice creating CO2 gas, which expands and KABOOOM!!!! Man oh man is it LOUD!!!! The explosion is unreal, if you make it right it's louder than a shotgun!!

If you mess up and make it wrong, you have to shoot it with the airgun. The 2liter expands so much that sometimes the BB will even ricochet off! It's also fun to get one of those contoured bottles like an Evian bottle and watch it expand like a damn balloon before it explodes. Have fun!

My local wal-mart sells dry ice so no problem there but I don't have any soda bottles.

a friend of mine was talkin bout those... so ive started saving up bottles... gonna give it a try b4 summer comes... ill let yall know how it goes... should gather a little attention in the dorms...

aparantly dry ice also reacts with zinc paint, put some in a can and then set at some poor guys door, knock and run, but you have to get the volume to paint right other wise it can go off too late or too soon *shrugs*

I don't know about dry ice, but I've made many a drain-o bomb. Drain-O bombs are easy to make. You need a can of the dry crystal drain-o, a roll of aluminum foil, a bottle(any kind with a screw on lid), and some water.

You take the aluminum foil and roll up about 10 joint-sized pieces and place them in the bottle, then take about four cap-fulls of drain-o and place it in the bottle, fill the bottle half-full with water and screw the lid on. Throw. BANG.

Be careful not to throw the bottle near any cars because the drain-o will eat the paint off. (My friends and I learned this the hard way.)

you can do it using any kind of chemical reaction that produces a gas...

ive used muriatic acid and foil...

You can use peroxide and aluminum as well

Just to throw an interesting twist on this one... if you surround the bottle in a container of some sort of powder (like a plastic bag full of flower or chalk) you get some interesting effects ;). When I can find out where to get a hold of some dry ice, I'm going to put a setup like that in a suite at school (we have 3-room suites off the hallways, instead of long hallways of rooms). I figure it would be a pretty damn funny way to wake someone up. Then they open the door, and the entire suite is filled with flower. :D

be careful with this.

i did it awhile back, and it made a hell of a lot of noise. enough noise, for example, to have your noisy neighbors call the cops and report you as a terrorist cell practicing for your grand dry-ice attack.

needed 1 bottle liquid "the works toilet bowl cleaner"
20 oz soda bottle
tin foil rolled in to 1/4 inch balls ( you can use just small sheets but balls work better)


open bottle pour about 1 1/2 inches of works in to bottle add some tin foil balls , shake briskly for a few sec , Throw , run like hell.

The good thing about this is that works is WAY easier to get ahold of than Dry ice and is much easier to handle, although it does have hydrocloric acid that can burn you so becareful.


on a side note the acid burns/melts shit kills crass ect . so dont use these Anyware were it can be picked up by an animal or hit a house or some thing like that becare full


you can make all sorts of things with house hold chemicals . You can even make mustard gas, you know the notirios chemical gas of WWI. i would tell but that a lili' irresponsable

Handy safety tip, people -

If you are going to make something that blows up, and the final step is "shake briskly for a few seconds," you might want to reconsider.

i think that it went something like fill up a bottle a bout an inch deap with crystal drano, then twist uup some foil and slide in der also, next get some water pour it in real fast screw on the cap and run. woooooooooohoooooooooo

Thanks too for bringing that up!! It wasn't my intention in this thread to bring up all sorts of dangerous shit....out of the other types of bombs ppl mentioned, dry ice is probably the least dangerous, but you can still hurt yourself with it.

Glass containers and some of these chemicals are BAD IDEAS, so just be careful, people...

We did the Aluminum and FCl in college, chucked em out of the dorm windows. This was BEFORE the current paranoia phase, and the cops still came and paid us a visit.
Basically, they weren't as impressed with our chemical prowess as we were. Threats of bomb manufacturing and such.... So we switched gears and started making "water pipes" instead!

Please dont make these bombs with anything corrosive. If it were to of while you were near you could be blinded :(

well i was at walmart today and decided to get some dry ice to make a dry ice bomb... we did and we put it in the fire escape room... (thats empty) and we waited and waited and waited then BOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMM it was really good... loudest ive ever heard and it echoed in that room really good... it was sweet...

i used to blow up snapple and nestea bottles with sparklers. im not going to say how because i dont want anyone getting hurt.

We (usually) just filled the bottles with water and shot them with a highpower rifle. They would explode. Another favorite is shooting an unopened, shaken, soda can with any high performance handgun ammunition. It will turn into mist.

I remember my friend (who lived on a nearby Air Force Base) tried that aluminum foil and Drain-O thing way back a few years ago(he was a minor then). He got caught causing him and his whole family to get kicked off base, his dad lost his job as well. Kind of screwed his whole family over... real bummer.

I used to work in a perishable foods warehouse...we would sneak some dry ice from the freezer dept and put some in a 2 liter bottle...add water...close, hide it and run like hell! Much louder then a m-80! Now 20 years later I have a constant ringing in my ears.....

ok heres the deal, you need to use gatoraid 24 ounce bottles, you know not the small ones but the ones that are smaller than a half gallon or so. big opening means big chunck of dry ice. and if you are afraid of the noise its reasonabbly quiet, like a .22 cal rather than a 44 mag. also the one time ive done it with a gatorade bottle the bottom busted out and the bottle launched into the air like a rocket. it was badass. also those little 8 ounce water bottles, well you know they look just like a hand grenade. you can also try attaching weights to the bottles and sinking em. makes no noise but you might be able to feel the ground shake *****DONT DO THIS IN A POOL YOU CAN CRACK THE CEMENT OR BLOW UP THE PUMP WITH THE COMPRESSION***

and most of all be safe, make the bomb, dont shake it, if you put enough dry ice in it, it will explode, if not do not aproach it by any means, there may not be any fire bit it can still take your hand off

also in the very first post of this thread, the other ingredient that goes with chlorine tablets is gasoline. when these two chemicals are combined it produces and INSTANT fireball explosion. DO NOT DO THIS. it is extremely dangerous. you will burn yourself. I would never even think of doing something this stupid

YO I was surprised as hell when skinnedmink and JStrider said that Wal-Mart sells dry ice, but I guess in some parts they do. Check there. And the ice cream place has to actually manufacture the ice cream on premises to be likely to also have dry ice -- Baskin Robbins wont really have it.

LOL and dry ice is cheap as dirt, it's been a while but last i checked it was about 80c a pound?? something like that. its not much.


I like dry ice better than the chemical bombs mentioned here coz it's not as dangerous as drano or carbide, but it STILL can be dangerous!
DONT go anywhere near an unexploded one, thats why you NEED the pellet gun :D flying dry ice could fuck up your eyes, but i cant imagine it would hurt you as seriously as some the other types of bombs mentioned here, hell, it's just water and compressed carbon dioxide. the flying plastic and other shit is a lot more dangerous. but you CAN get a serious frostbite burn if dry ice comes in contact with your skin for any length of time. PLEASE be careful!!!


and yeah, the Evian bottles and other contoured small bottles are bad as shit. theyre some of the loudest and you can watch the ridges expand like a damn balloon! woohoo

the dry ice at the walmart was expensive... like $2 a pound... at the chemical place in Lubbock,TX it was like $1.05 a pound an no minnimum purchase amount...

here in Bakersfield, CA theres only one place i can find it at and you have to buy atleast 10 lbs for $12.87 and after that its priced by how much you buy...

if you're careful and have access to a pond with no fish in it, you can make a great sodium missile. Get a coffee can sized chunk of pure sodium. WEAR GLOVES. Do NOT do this on a humid day! Do not allow ANY moisture to get on the sodium AT ALL until you're ready.

It's best to store it in a rubbermaid container until you get to the pond.

Just toss the chunk into the middle of the pond. Make sure that's far away from where you are. About 2 seconds after it goes in, it'll explode out with a HUGE bang, and go straight up. It'll drop back down and explode out again many times. Fun stuff!

There was a question asked -
whats the foil for?

The aluminun in the foil and The Works cause a chemical reaction that emits a gas - I believe it is C02 (Carbon Dioxide)
Unfortuantely, one of the other products of this mixture is hydrochloric acid. Cheese was right when he said to be careful.
With that disclaimer in place, Have Fun-but always be safe

P.S. A variation of foil balls are foil "snakes" The object of this is to get as much surface area between the foil and the toilet bowl cleaner. If you want a longer "fuse," use less foil, for a shorter one, use more shaped in a way for maximum surface area.

well, i work in a grocery store.....when we get in ice cream, they ship it in a big cooler packed with bags of dry ice. me and some guys took some the other day and put a good sized amount in a 20 oz coke bottle, poured in some water and screwed on the lid. that bitch build up a shit load of pressure and exploded. it was so fuckin loud it sounded like a shotgun goin off. cops came to the store and asked about reported gunshots in the area.....damn cool stuff....i wish i could get my hands on some more.
