weather stripping
I need to replace the weather stripping on my front door due to drafts esp. since I can see some sunlight sneaking in at deadbolt height. I bought some vinyl weather stripping that has a hard flange that tucks into the door frame. The current weather stripping actually has a larger flange (with three "ribs") whereas the replacement only has one. I will need to know if that is an issue.
The second part of my question is that there seems to be staples going though the door frame holding the old weather stripping in place. What should I do about that? Do I just rip out the old shit and use a saw-saw or something to cut the staples? Do the staples do anything more than hold the weather stripping in place? Thanks for your assistance- c_b

The key to the weather stripping is to keep air from penetrating, if the new stripping fills the gap snugly, it should be fine.
The trick is to get it snug without impairing the operation of the door. Remove the old weatherstripping completely and get a clean surface to attach the new stuff. The Sawzall may be overkill for the staples, try a small flat head screwdriver and some needle nose pliers. Also inspect the sweep under the door.

Thanks for the advice nirol.
(laughing at myself) Saw-saw definitely meant sawzall : ) See why I need help? My concern with the staples is that they appear to have been installed by the manufacturer of the door so the "heads" are not really exposed. That is why I was considering cutting them without having to damage the door frame. I agree that a sawzall is probably overkill...maybe a wire cutter would do the trick if it would fit into the gap where i would like to...
