Cleaning old hardwood floors?

I just moved into a studio apartment that has old hardwood floors. I want to clean them. How do I go about them? Do I just mop them like I would a regular floor? What kind of cleaning solution should I use? Any advice would be helpful.

I recommend Murphys Oil Soap for general cleaning. Goes on like you would a regular squeeze mop, but you don't soak the floor - rather wring out the sponge and then apply. (Puddles are bad.) Can be found at most grocery stores. It's the only cleaner I'll use on my floors.

It depends on what you're trying to get off. If it's just that they haven't been cleaned lately, apetaster's advice is right on. If they have other stuff on them you will likely need to take other action.

I have just had my floors sanded and refinished...look like brand new and the finish is so easy to take care of.
