anybody know how to balance a wobbly ceiling fan?

thanks.........

that much is done, wise guy.........

something has recently gone out of whack on my bedroom fan that worked very smoothly until about a month ago. i remember something in the installation instructions about balancing it if need be, but of course i threw all that shit away......

They usually come with a balance kit. If you don't have it anymore you could probably buy one at a store that sells the fans. Mine came with something that looked like a clothes pin and some sheets of lead with an adhesive side. You would put the clothes pin on each blade and run the fan to see if it smoothes out. When you find the right blade you move the clothes pin thingy to different places on the blade to find the perfect location for the weight. Then you would stick a weight on that spot on the blade to balance it. I assume the weight and the clothes pin thingy weigh the same.

Since yours was fine a month ago maybe one of the blades needs tightend up or the weight fell off. Check that first.

that's the shit!!

thanks, dib.

or...tape a penny to a blade and see if it fixes it...that's what i always did. You've only got five options to try....

Check and see if the fan blades are screwed on tight. On lot of fans I've been around the blade screws like to loosen themselves.

Like they said, loose screws or a missing weight can do it,
Plus,
would you believe that a fan blade that's bent at a different angle from the rest can do the same thing? Different amount of lift being generated is what does it I guess.

All of my suggestions have already been used. You could go out and buy a higher quality fan, like a Casablanca or HunterDouglas. I'm definitely a fan snob because I think casablancas are so much better than the average fan and worth the scratch every time you turn it on...

When we set up fans at my old house they came with little weights that you put on the edge of a blade to stop the wobbling.. Check and see if you got any of these, they work pretty well.

I think you mean Hunter. HunterDouglas makes drapes and blinds ;)

BTW, Casablanca is made by Hunter. It's just the fancy version - - -like Acura is to Honda.

Also BTW, don't let the Home Depot monkeys tell you that Hampton Bay is a Hunter. It's made by Hunter, but to Home Depot, NOT Hunter specs. Their quality is much lower than a real Hunter.

But you're right - Casablancas/Hunters are pretty much the best fans made.

---if you are going to stick a weight to the top of the fan, wipe it off first with alcohol....or it will come off like a rocket.---a nickel makes a good weight.

OOPS! I stand corrected. Hunter good. Hunter douglas drapes. mongo rest now...

thanks

my casablanc is not a super fancy one, but it is 52", 15 degree five blade and will blow you out of the room if you turn it up. It is farking' awesome - or it is quiet and nice at lower speeds. It is a real fan, not like the crap the sell at lumber yards and home depots. I didn't pay full retail - friend of mine bought all his house's fixtures at light and leisure and received a 40% off any fixture bought for the next year, so I posed as his brother and got mucho dollars off.
