how do you get rid of pop ups
Im not sure where they are coming from and i cant make them stop....is there any kind of program i can run to check my computer for spyware or any other thing that would stop them.
I use "POW". I got it from www.download.com it's kinda a pain because everytime a new popup comes up you have to add it to a list and I have actually added my internet window a couple of times making my internet unusable. but other than those minor things it's a good program.
I click on the little X in the corner of the popup window
haha.....touché
i use popnot, shareware but meh
fuc popups
If it those annoying pop-up like system alerts you can kill them for free... go to
ps this is for XP control panel administrative tools services messenger diable on left side then right click properties... start up = disabled.... also for web pop-ups download google search bar it has a built in pop-up blocker hope that helps Sal |
I use Pop-Up Stopper. It works pretty well. It just won't allow an extra internet window to open unless you hold down Ctrl. It can get a little annoying some time but it usually works quite well.
I use Popupcop....... kills all teh popups and has a history kill as well......
http://www.popupcop.com/download.html |
If for som reason you absolutely MUST use microsnot internet explorer then click on links by right clicking and open in a new window. Then if popups start then get quick with the "alt+F4" button combo that will kill the app window faster than the popup code can load into it.
Or, you could use Mozilla (the best browser out there) for a superior browzing experience - tabbed browsing is vastly superior. Free forever at mozilla.org If you don't want popups, you don't get no popups. |
I use Pop-Up Stopper from Panicware, Inc. Stops everything!
I've stopped using Pop-up Stopper and switched to "Ad Popup Killer" which basically stops Messenger Popups and all other popups. Simple in design but very effective.
Ad Popup Free 3.50 - Free version http://download.com.com/3000-2378-10...ml?tag=lst-3-3 Ad Popup Killer4.0 - Paid version http://www.safefirewall.com/popupdownload.html |
If you're getting pop ups from sites you visit frequently, go into IE's "Tools", select "Internet Options", the "Security".
Select the Web Zone "Restricted Sites". Add the web address of the site you visit to the list of restricted sites. It will stop pop-ups on that site. |
you learn something new every day !!!
I've used popupstopperpro and the google toolbar beta 2.0 on windows. Does pretty well.
i am running stop zilla, it can be downloaded easily on kazza, so far it has been so so, i was running stop the pop before and that crashed my computer like it was its job, i am running XP pro if anyone cares
I use Ad Aware from lavasoft. It's really good. you probably picked up Gator, Gain, or AIM when you downloaded Kazaa or something like it. AA will get rid of it.
Ad aware by Lavasoft is really nice - it's not a popup blocker, but it does search for and destroy spyware entries in the registry, currently running processes, cookies, and applications. It's very nice for maintaining a healthy comp, though you might also need a pop up blocking application to go along with it.

The BEST pop-up killer (and a lot more:
http://www.naviscope.com Other useful programs: Free Virus Checker AVG: http://www.grisoft.com Free online scan - Add the link to Favourites! (use in emergencies ot if you think your usual Virus Checker has been nobbled - yes it can even happen to Norton) Disable any other AV software before running: http://www.pandasoftware.com/actives..._principal.htm Get rid of SPYWARE(causes you computer to have myriads of popups when surfing and can grind speed to a halt). Use both Spybot AND Adaware (though not at same time): http://security.kolla.de/index.php?l...&page=download http://www.tucows.com/preview/236049.html (if this doesn't work, then go to http//:www.lavasoft.de and search from there). Firewall - e.g. Zonealarm. You need one of these to stop hackers from getting into your computer and from any trojans you may have contracted from communicating outwards from your PC: http://www.zonelabs.com Trojan Remover/Scanner: http://www.simplysup.com/tremover/download.html SPAM - Get Mailwasher, it's the best!! It will bounce SPAM back to the sender, making it look like your addy is defunct. It acts as an intermediary step between the server and your computer and will identify Virus infected mails before they get a sniff of your hard disk. You can delete mail off server (say if someone has sent you a humungous file) and you can create filters too. http://www.mailwasher.net for the free version http://www.firetrust.com to buy the pro version (well worth it) Report Spam if you are getting it to the following: OSIRUSOFT.COM - they produce blacklists which may email providers use. Domains on their lists will not be allowed to send or relay mail. Spamcop - http://spamcop.net/anonsignup.shtml Elsop's Anti Spam page - http://www.elsop.com/wrc/nospam.htm Use 'em! |
I use a program called no-Ads work fairly well, thogh you do have to ad some popups as tehy aren't recognized by the system..
Though I've heard excellent things about the Google tool bar.. |
for popups:
do 2 things. first, get and run ad-aware. you've probably got gator. gator is responsible for a lot of popups, and these popups have nothing to do with the sites you're visiting. ever gotten a popup on google.com? that's gator. second, get mozilla or firebird. ALL of those popup-blockers are crap. It's one more program to run, one more program sucking away your system resources. one more thing to wait to load when you start your computer. also, get a virus scanner. don't go for any of those free ones online. who knows what they do. get either norton antivirus or mcafee virus scan. keep them up to date with their online updates. if you have a virus, let the checker remove it. if you end up with a trojan, well you're fucked. for security's sake you'll have to reformat and reinstall windows; you simply never know what back doors a trojan may have installed. also, make sure you've got windows update enabled. No software is 100% hackerproof (especially Microsoft's stuff) so don't get caught off-guard because you didn't get the latest update. another tip: don't read your spam. spammers put special HTML in the spam emails that tells them if you've read the email or not. If you've read the email they know a real-live person will read spam they send to your address and you'll keep getting more and more and more and more... |
The best way to get rid of pop ups is to just get a Mac.
yup. once you're incompatible with 90% of the computing world's useful programs you'll be incompatible with 90% of the non-useful ones as well :)
Ad-muncher. I have tried many many many other pop-up stoppers but ad-muncher is the best. It even gets rid of the annoying banner ads and marquee ads. It works pretty damn well, it's shareware, but the one piece of shareware that is worth buying. Just gotta google it up to find it
the new google toolbar has an excellent pop up blocker built in it...and its free even!
http://toolbar.google.com/?fix=en |
Thanks for the great links, especially naviscope!
Wow, I dont have a suggestion, however, this was a very informative thread. A lot of great suggestions that I will be looking at. Thanks!!

The google tool bar has worked really well for me.
I'd just skip all the 'effort' and download another web browser with a built in popup stopper.
Opera, Avant Browser, and Mozilla all work just fine and keep the popups out of your hair. |

Google now offers a nice little toolbar with a pop up stopper.
http://toolbar.google.com/ copy and paste the above link Clear out your temp internet files and install this nice little app. called spybot search and destroy. http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/fil...d,22262,00.asp Lots of goodies at the above link |
I'm an Opera user.... try it... you might like it :D
POP UP FREE for two years. Thank you Opera. |
a few people have mentioned firebird, and i just wanted to aid in the pimping by putting a direct link to the installer. despite that it's still in early realease, i may start recommending it to more of my clients, as to default popup blocking really decreases the likelyhood of the user getting spyware. if you surf more han an hour per day on average, you'll notice the speed benefits as well.
http://downloads.mozdev.org/seb/Mozi....6.1-setup.exe mozilla-proper is a little bulky for most users, i think. |
I just recently downloaded the google toolbar, which blocks popup ads and has the added benefit of giving you a google search bar right in the menu bar of your internet explorer browser. dunno if they have a mozilla/netscape version.
Free sufer work well you have to teach it a little
Most pop up stoppers either fail to work or ad spyware to your computer, at least in my experience. I would have to say your best bet would be to switch to a browser like Mozzila or Opera and maybe download Ad - Aware and cleanse your computer of spyware.

Have to agree with the new Google toolbar suggestions. It was my first and only popup blocker, and I couldn't imagine being without it now!
Simply go to Google and get their new tool bar. There's no spyware in it except for Page Ranker which can easily be turned off in options. Also included is a Pop-up blocker which works better than any of the others I've used.
another vote for the google toolbar - I've played with a few pop-up blockers in the past, and google's is the only one that has worked well without being a hassle to use.
As others said, use mozilla. Much more secure for browsing than IE.
Ad-aware and webwasher do the trick for me.

depends on what type your talking about. if your speaking of the ones that popup when your browsing on the internet then use the popup stoppers that everyone is speaking of. if your talking about the windows messenger ones there are other ways than turning off a windows component to stopping those.
on the PC, I reccomend using Opera, on the Mac, use Safari, both block pop-ups rather well. Also, meantime, go get as-aware from www.adaware.com and clean all the spyware crap off your system!
The Google task bar has a pretty fine popup-blocker. And a neat counter right in the middle that keeps count of how many adverts you didnt have to see :-)
Amazed no-one has mentioned MyIE2. It uses the IE engine (ie compatibility) but has a whole load of other features, one of which is a popup-and-inline-ad-killer. Try it out!
spyboy and adaware to check for spyware. googles toolbar does a really good job with popups
i find google toolbar works really well, it lets some popups through, but usually the ones you want when you have clicked on things. Ive tried other popup blockers before and you usally had to turn them off to get the popups you wanted.

This program requires some advanced configuration, the interface doesnt look very professional at first sight (however its customizable to some extent), but its extremely thorough and customizable.
It can filter anything you can think of out of a web page. Its customizable and you can create your own advanced filters. It really does too much to list, although some of it is on the excessive side. The problems are that its not being worked on any longer, and I still should probably look for other web filters that may be better. Also, when a user tries the program out, it may not work exactly the way he wants, and he'll give up before bothering to understand and custom-configure the settings (there several config files to chose from, but even then its hard to find the right one for you). Really though the program is configurable beyond comparison, it can even change headers and cookies. I'm currently looking for a way to deal with gamespy arcade pop-ups. URL: proxomitron.info the (dead)project page is at geocities.com/srl_list/index.html Second, in regards to Ad-aware and alike programs, Spybot SD is a free and surpassing alternative. It stays up-to-date on its databases. Can be run in advanced mode. It also has an interesting feature of immunizing from some possible future infections. Like preventing you (or your little kids or siblings) from installing more sneaky spyware again. URL: security.kolla.de Google toolbar is pretty good for its quick search, highlighting, and convenience features though, it supposedly stopped 26,000 pop-ups in a few short days. LOL somebody's been visiting too many shady sites |
I use EMS Free Surfer Mk II, possibly the best pop up blocker I've come across. Download it here. It features a "Natural" mode, which blocks most annoying pop-up ads, and a "Strict" mode which blocks ALL pop up ads. It also features a nifty little add-on that automatically clears your cache, cookies, recently downloaded files, whenever you ask it to, or whenever you have it scheduled to.
The following are spyware/adware scanners/removers You can download SpyBot: Search and Destroy here. You can download Ad-aware 6.0 here. I would recommend downloading both Spyware/Adware programs. Spyware Blaster blocks all annoying bad ActiveX installation prompts, but allows the good ones through. Download it here. I've also used WebWasher and P.O.W, both of which are alternative Pop-Up blockers. |
yea use the google toolbar, but if its those shitty XP messenger pop ups, then you have to go to control panel > admnistrative tools > services or some garbage to turn those off, search for it, doesnt anyone do that anymore?
I downloaded the Google toolbar. It's quite handy and has a button wich allows you to allow pop-ups on a site or not
