Toilet Training your cat

Has anyone ever trained their cat to use the toilet?
I'm not talking about using the litter box. I'm talking about seriously jumping up on the same commode that we use and doing their business.

Me and my fiance just got a new kitten and I really would love to train it how to use the "john". I once had a cat that we never trained to do this but it still went piss in the toilet...it was hilarious because I walked in on him one time and he looked at me like "hey bastard...get out and shut the door behind ya!".

It would be a lot cleaner and less smelly than using a litter box (which we are using right now).

Anyone had success in doing this? I'd be interested to see what you did.

I must admit to thinking this was a silly idea when I first read it, but if you google "cat toilet", one of the first responses is video evidence that it can be done.

I know it probably sounds silly, but I know that it is possible. I swear that our old cat used to watch us pee (since his litter pan was in the bathroom already) and figured out what we were doing and tried to mimic it. So awesome how animals learn.

There are cat training books that will teach you how to toilet train a cat. I've never done it myself, as I haven't personally owned a kitten since I was 5, but someday I'd like to try it.

my cat is weird because she is both outdoor and indoor, and we never trained her but when shes in the house for a few days or so, she wont piss or crap in the house, she'll actually run to the back door for me to let her out, kind of weird but cool.

guess shes naturally trained

I tried a cat toilet training book many years ago, but I think our cat was too old and set in her ways. Had she been a few years younger it may have worked.

I can't comment on how to train your cat, however our oldest cat (4 yrs) peed in the toilet on his own a few weeks ago while I was out of town. It scared the crap out of my girlfriend since she could hear someone peeing, and knew i was away at a fishing tourney... So there is hope for all cats...

I tried to teach my cats to do this... turned out to not be very successful because I could never tell which one was having trouble with it...

the technique is pretty easy... move the litter box into the bathroom, then onto the toilet.

I used a foil baking tray i bent to fit into the toilet bowl, and put the litter in it. then you gradually lower the litter level and then put a little hole in the middle, and gradually enlarge it until theyre used to it not being there at all...

also get flushable litter, the clay based stuff is terrible in toilets.

Does this work with older cats, too?

Do you know what kind of litter is flushable - like the brand. I've looked at walmart and all i see is clay and crystals. None that i see say they're flushable.

Try putting the cat in the bowl and flushing, so that it gets the idea.

I have successfully trained my cat to use the toilet.

Here's how I did it:
  1. Buy a big disposable roasting pan
  2. Cut it to fit the bowl of your toilet
  3. Fill with cat litter
  4. Give treats when cat uses the toilet
  5. Lower the amount of litter every so often (could be a few days or weeks, it all depends on the cat)
  6. Watch the cat, when it's just about to "relieve" itself, make sure to pick it's paws up and perch on the toilet seat
  7. Again give treats and praise for this behavior
  8. Continue lowering litter amount til it's all gone
  9. Cut a small hole in the center of the pan
  10. Gradually, make the hole larger - take notice of how the cat responds to this
  11. Once the hole is the size of the pan you should be ready to take out out completely

At anytime your cat could rebel, and relieve itself anywhere. Don't get mad, just go back a step. It does take time and patience but in the end it's very satisfying not to have to smell cat shit and clean out a litter pan.

Below are a couple videos I took. She usually likes her privacy and won't go if people are watching.

Warning: it is a bit graphic - but for educational purposes only

Don't think I want to teach her how to flush - I've heard of people doing that and then their cats constantly flush the toilet because they like to watch the water swirl.

Our cat has an unnatural fondness of water...so if we taught her how to flush I have a feeling we'd end up with a massive water bill
