Home heating question

Is it more efficient to maintain the house at 70 degrees around the clock, or to let it cool overnight (don't need it, all bundled up in bed) and warm it back up in the morning?

It is generally more efficient to adjust your thermostat when you don't need the heat. This means both at night and while you're away (such as at work during the day). The same goes for air conditioning as well as heating.

When you're dealing with that many hours of using heat to maintain a temperature, it's more efficient to turn it down for that time and bring it back to temperature when you need it.

Really, you like your home at 70? Seems a bit warm to me. I personally would find it difficult to sleep with the heat that high. Turn it down to 60 for the night and throw another blanket on the beds.

Depending on the climate, turning off heat entirely would be a bad idea (frozen pipes). Turning it down to 50 when you and others are not home to enjoy it, and back to 65 or 70 when you return home would be ideal.

Invest in a automated thermostat. You can set it to raise and lower the temperature of your house automatically. Let's say you get up at 6 am every morning. You can set it to bring the heat up around 5:30 am so it is warm as you get out of bed.

Personally, we would keep the house around 22c or 23c and just put on sweaters.
