Photoshop - how to become a great user...

I have had photoshop for several years sitting on my computer - Please tell me how I can learn to use this program properly. Are there any good books/videos/software that can help tutor me into doing more than just the lowest level tasks.
The program came bundled with a digital camera that I purchased, so I never got the manual (although I have to say that most computer manuals are totally USELESS!)

Trial and error. And playing around with the tools.

Just get a photo, and see what you can do to distort the photo.

I Learned PS simply by playing with it, granted there are some things that I don't know how to do, but everything i've needed to figgure out i've just taught myself. Experience is the best teacher, or so they say.

Photoshop is very intuitive. You can learn most of the basic/intermediate functions by simply playing around with it.
Check out: http://www.phong.com/tutorials/

Thats where I learned a bunch of stuff...

paddyjoe 06-25-2003 04:36 AM

Ashton, you are the man! I've been using ps mainly for brightness/contrast adjustments and to bump up saturation levels. These sites look great. Thanks!

That's because you're using the standard forum format....... switch to dark cloud, I started using red text about two thousand posts ago....... when there was a blue format. green on green suxxors.......

guypunkr 07-09-2003 12:24 AM

Wow... Ashton, Peach, those really help out.

*bows to the gurus of Photoshop*

I use Photoshop to edit pictures I plan on using for commercial things (like CD covers). I know it's not really directly related to Photoshop, but are there any tips either of you could give me?

Thanks.

You can do almost anything with Photoshop.... The possibilities are endless, Try playing around with Filter Effects.. FILTER/ Artistic ~ Texture and Layer Styles LAYER/LAYER STYLE Drop Shadow ~ Stroke..... Note, if you want to play with Layer Styles first you load the pic then click LAYER/DUPLICATE LAYER/OK.... work with the duplicate layer, Layer Styles will be grayed out on the background pic, Drop Shadow and Bevel & Emboss are fun. Extract is a good tool to cut fine detail out of pic's.... much better than the lasso tool, LAYER/EXTRACT in 6 and FILTER/EXTRACT in 7..... remember to use the Smart Highlighting tool for fine edges, it tracks them nicely.

If you're really interested in learning Photoshop buy this book....
http://search.barnesandnoble.com/boo...toshop_7_bible

It's a great book..... :D

cowudders14 08-13-2003 05:37 AM

Wow! Thanks all - They will come in very handy. I've wanted to learn what the 000's of other functions of photoshop do for a long time, and how to start professional photochopping...

Cheers!

Plan9Senior 08-13-2003 07:23 PM

Wow, lots of nice sites in that list. Thanks for taking time to post all of those links Flamingpeach.

Munku 08-15-2003 05:50 PM

Check out www.thewebmachine.com Tons of great tutorials on there!

telekinetic2 08-18-2003 07:16 PM

I personally taught myself photoshop by using the tutorials at deviantart.com, as well as looking through their images and trying to duplicate them...I've found that if my photoshopping is goal-oriented rather than just trying to make something cool, it works a lot better.

Also, if you have the money, do your self a HUGE favor and go buy a $99 Graphire tablet. You'll thank me for it the first time you have to freehand a selection mask.

nothingx 08-19-2003 09:17 PM

I know you said that you don't own it, but I gotta say it anyway...

RTFM

Seriously, if you can get your hands on one, do it. Its 440 pages of good stuff. The photoshop bible, if you will...
