removing duct tape goo

Anyone have any suggestions for removing semi old duck tape glue from a painted wall? goo-gone work?

hambone 09-07-2006 10:25 PM

I would try goo gone, since that stuff is amazing. May want to try on a part of the wall you don't really see first in case it ends up taking the paint with it.

There is an Aerosol product by 3M called Citrus Base Cleaner, the stuff is expensive (like 20 bucks a can) but it works awesome. Again try it on a nonvisible spot because it does leave an oily residue (which can be cleaned w/ soap and water) but it works great. You can get it here http://www.outdoorsuperstore.com/pro...sp?prod=252300

Goo gone is the most likely thing. It's alcohol based, and you want to use plenty of it to completely dilute the adhesive. I'd try it in an out-of-the-way area first to make sure it doesn't strip the paint.

I think goo gone should work...but it will also certainly have an impact on the paint and the wall surface.

Probably the best way to restore the wall to like new, no duct tape residue condition would be to sand, skim spackle or plaster, and repaint the whole wall from within all cut-in points...if you care that much.

Depending on the surface...even just a really light sanding of the duct tape gunk to remove and some spot painting could work too.

I think that no matter what if you goo-gone it...it will still need sanding and painting so might as well skip it. The above suggestion about an out-of-the-way test is worth considering though.

What kind of paint and what kind of wall. Goo Gone is petroleum based (not alcohol based) ... it may strip paint or it may leave a stain. You may not be able to paint back over it if it soaks into the wall.

I'd go with j8ear's suggestion. Sand it and then repaint it.

WD-40 also removes stuff like that. They even make it in a pen form.

I usually remove adhesives on surfaces I'm worried about damaging with a solvent by rubbing the sticky spot with something that will bulk up the adhesive (e.g. dryer lint, toilet paper, sugar, etc) and then just rubbing the spot in on itself until it forms pieces big enough to remove. It takes a while but gves good results with little chance of staining or damaging the surface.

Ham has a point. Things I never thought would come off came off with that goo gone stuff! Not too expensive either if I remember correctly.

ngdawg 09-23-2006 09:43 PM

The only problem with using stuff like Goo-gone or Goop-off or WD-40 is that they also have oil in with the alcohol and that is going to ruin any future paintjob as walls, whether plaster or gypsum, are absorbent.
I'd do what j8ear suggested-sand it down.

I can tell you from experience that Goo Gone definitely works! I once spent a week cleaning old duct tape residue, both sticky and dried, off of electrical cables at a lighting rental shop. Boy did that ever suck.

Obviously you should test it on a discrete corner of whatever surface your cleaning to check for damage, but it will do the job and doesn't smell too bad. I'd wear gloves if you're doing an extensive job.

Good luck.

Here's another suggestion for caution. Latex paints hate Goo Gone. Even if it sticks, you can end up with a wall that looks like someone left a piece of pizza on the other side. :)

If the wall surface is at all smooth, the residue should be easy to sand without damage. How much residue? Try warming it up so it'll ball up again, or cooling it so it crumbles.

My god this is a long thread. Not that it says anything new about duct tape...

Something new about duct tape: It makes a great little wallet:lol:

Heh, now that you mention it I have seen that. The patch that grows and eventually outlasts the original material. :)

How about others? Pets have been a big topic lately. Any pet related duct-tape use that doesn't involve cruelty?

New ideas for Christmas presents. :D

I'll include goo-gone as a stocking stuffer.

Grasshopper Green 09-27-2006 05:05 PM

Lighter fluid (like Ronsonol, comes in a yellow bottle, not the stuff you use on your BBQ) will remove sticky residue...we used to use it at work to take tape goo off of counters and registers and such. I don't know if it would damage paint though.

cheeterbo 10-03-2006 07:27 PM

goo gone or wd 40

Aro23 10-04-2006 07:05 AM

try goo gone or a steam cleaner

Rohwer 10-04-2006 07:26 AM

I have heard put ice on it and make it cold almost frozen. Then take your fingers and roll over it and it will roll into a ball rather easily. Woth a shot.... Doesn't cost you anything.

That is great. I got the "Triplett" version of one of these as a gift a few years back:

"Ducti" site

Still get quite a few interesting comments from observers when I pull this bad boy out. Almost as much fun as the kangaroo scrotum (yes you read that correctly!) change purse another Marine unknowingly bought me in Australia as he was embarrassed with the 75 aus $$ in coins I had jingling and jangling in my pocket when we spent some time in port in Perth.

Good times

Mr. Clean Magic eraser. That thing works on EVERYTHING!

jbrooks544 10-24-2006 07:54 AM

Two things I use that work for almost everything I run into:

Goo-Gone
Goof-Off
Other than that, just regular 3M adhesive remover.

even better is to get a can of compressed air from a computer store, turn it upside down, and shoot the goo with it. It'll freeze the goo quite nicely without getting melted ice all over the place.

And next time, throw the duct tape away. That stuff is junk. Use gaffers tape. Same uses, much more durable, and won't leave sticky crap all over the place.

Another vote for...

Great stuff.

I would have to go with WD40. Wonderfull stuff that is, so wonderfull it should have its own thread too.
Everything you will ever encounter in your life can be fixed with either duct tape or WD40. If it moves and it shouldnt use duct tape. if it dosent move and it should use WD40.
On a side note, Duct tape is like The Force, it has a light side and a dark side and it binds the universe together.

Gaffers tape is great stuff. Of course for nearly 20 bucks a roll it should be:|

glasscutter43 11-20-2006 09:39 PM

try dabbing the old residue with the sticky side of some fresh duct tape

If it's outdoors and on metal or something that will not melt when exposed to gasoline, gasoline it works great.
