Maths Problem

Seems about my level right now!

Sleepyjack 12-15-2005 06:47 PM

Ha, i quite like that one :p

Siege 12-15-2005 07:20 PM

At first I was confused. Then I was laughing, both at the joke, and at me

Willravel 12-15-2005 07:34 PM

Oh man that's good...hahahaha!

rsl12 12-15-2005 08:04 PM

That's very cute!

rlbond86 12-15-2005 08:04 PM

lmao!!!!!!

KellyC 12-15-2005 08:58 PM

K....so that's two threads that makes me laugh out loud. Thanks!

liquidlight 12-15-2005 09:16 PM

Apparently I'm the only one not getting this. . . :P blame it on sleep deprivation and the fact that I haven't had a math class in 8 years hehe

Try looking at the last answer again.

Then look at it again.

You'll see.

It's a good one!

Edit: you won't need expert math knowledge. The student apparently didn't :)

Redlemon 12-16-2005 08:28 AM

Nice nice nice. I dropped this in a Blonde joke thread, but I'll drop it here as well, since it is more appropriate here.

Mantus 12-16-2005 02:10 PM

I like that, thanks!

Zeraph 12-16-2005 02:23 PM

LOL at both, good ones.

Here's a hint for those that didn't get it, on the second one the answer is a sideways 5, which isn't a real symbol like the sideways 8 meaning infinity. Now take another look at them and why the student doesn't get it (IIRC they both equal infinity).

Nimetic 12-17-2005 03:54 PM

That's cool. Sheesh. It reminds me that mentoring/teaching sure has it's moments.

Nimetic 12-17-2005 03:56 PM

Loud laughter. Oh shit. That's great.

gamefreak1398 12-18-2005 01:35 PM

although the first answer's wrong also XD
but good joke lol made me chuckle

AngelicVampire 12-18-2005 02:16 PM

Why is it wrong? As X tends to 8 the sum becomes undefined (1/0), however as it approaches it for values say 7.9999 the value becomes very large (1/0.0001 = 10,000), so it does approach infinity. Of course a sideways 5 is wrong though... :D

Daniel_ 12-18-2005 03:04 PM

Funny.

Fuuuuuuuuh-neeee!

Randomfunk 12-18-2005 03:25 PM

Have to admit I sat here for a good minute or so trying to work out what the symbol was in the second one before I actually realised what it was...

Gilda 12-18-2005 03:48 PM

Chalk me up as another who didn't understand the joke until it was explained. The first one made no sense to me, so it really wasn't possible for me to process the second in any way.

it's wrong because it approaches both infinity and negative infinity
so the limit actually does not exist.....

unless the limit says x -> 8+ then it would be infinity
but it doesnt have the + after 8, so it approaches 8 from both sides
yes, from the right, the limit does approach infinity
but when it comes from the left, it approaches negative infinity

you can make it right by squaring the denominator of the equation, then the limit would approach infinity

so that's why it's wrong
but good joke :)

love it. isn't math wonderful?

A more asthetically pleasing fix would be to just make the whole thing the absolute value.

SirLance 12-20-2005 06:14 PM

Oh, god, I'm gonna wet my pants...

dun_ask 12-23-2005 10:40 AM

haha good joke, I didn't get it at first until I really looked at it. Hizzah!
