Sometimes it DOES take a rocket Scientist

Allegedly True

Scientists at Rolls Royce built a gun specifically to launch dead chickens
at the windshields of airliners and military jets all traveling at maximum
velocity. The idea was to simulate the frequent incidents of collisions
with airborne fowl to test the strength of the windshields and so prevent
catastrophic accidents.

American engineers heard about the gun and wanted to use it to test the
strength of the windshields on their new high speed trains. Arrangements
were made and a gun was sent to the American engineers. When the gun was
fired, the engineers watched horrified as the chicken hurled out of the
barrel, crashed into the shatterproof shield, smashed it to smithereens,
blasted through the control console, snapped the engineers back-rest in two
and embedded itself in the back wall of the cabin, like an arrow from a
bow.

The shocked Yanks sent Rolls Royce the disastrous results of the
experiment, along with the design of the windshield and begged the British
scientists for suggestions.

Rolls Royce responded with a one line memo: "Defrost the chicken"

TerresqueÜ 05-15-2003 12:40 PM

Hahhahaha! But why isnt this in humor!?

Minx 05-15-2003 12:46 PM

"Defrost the chicken!" Ohhhh I'm still laughing over this....a chicken gun - there's a million jokes out there for this one!

Mad_Gecko 05-15-2003 12:59 PM

Yeah, thanks I just realised it should be in humour. Hopefully some kind mod'll move it for me.. Sorry

Scorpion23 05-15-2003 04:07 PM

I love it. I've heard it before, but it was americans that built the gun and sent it to british engineers. This can be seen in the use of high-speed trains. America doesn't have any trains that travel fast enough to have trouble of this sort, but europe has plenty of high-speed bullet trains.

pilot123 05-15-2003 07:04 PM

yea Americans built it and sent it to the brits and the french. Stupid foreigners cant figure out American designs.

TwoToTango 05-16-2003 06:12 AM

While the frozen chicken story is almost
certainly apocryphal, jet engine testing does
indeed include making sure that the engine
can survive bird intake. The testers are known
in the industry as "chicken chuckers." Well,
at least that's what Grumman called 'em back
in the day.

Darklight Adept 05-16-2003 08:48 AM

hehe, I can imagine the flying frozen fowl frustrating the friggin scientists. It's great ;)

GremlinDelirium 05-16-2003 08:43 PM

lol... they aren't too bright... thats like using a brick

clifclav 05-20-2003 09:49 AM

very cute. thanks

small one 05-21-2003 12:51 AM

Possibly the best funny I've heard in ages

riptide4070 05-21-2003 07:25 AM

that's the funniest joke I've heard all week!!!

duckduck 05-22-2003 12:34 AM

That's actually really funny. I am hoping, however, that this is just a gag.

jindiv 05-23-2003 04:02 AM

Sorry guys,

this is a well known urban legend.

oblar 05-23-2003 07:26 AM

urban legend or not, I have seen one of these guns.. they are funny..

although the amount of feathers spread across the area are rather disturbing.. This was at an airforce base testing center.. ;) still funny seeing a cannon meant specifically to make a chicken fly.

teflonian 05-23-2003 09:43 AM

Are you supposed to use a live chicken?

SirLance 05-23-2003 05:32 PM

Boom... crunch. I'm sure its an urban legend, but I do believe the french could be that stupid. When we blew up their embassy in Tripoli, they actually believed it was an accident...

DelayedReaction 05-23-2003 05:46 PM

Of course, the only reason the engineers who had originally used the gun had a response was because they had been there, done that.

oblar 05-23-2003 06:23 PM

teflonian, the place I visited usually just bought frozen chickens similar to the ones in the stores so usually no feathers, no heads, and no innards.. but the mass is about the same, so not a big difference there.

Atomic Pinkie 05-24-2003 06:46 AM

thats pretty nuts

LOAD THE MAIN GUN
LOADING THE CHICKEN
AIMING THE CHICKEN
FIRING THE CHICKEN
SQQAAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWKKKKK

*thud*

Zesty 05-24-2003 01:39 PM
