Whose line is it anyway?

Thanks to youtube, I've been rewatching all the golden moments of one of my favorite (and underrated) shows of all time. Figured I'd throw a list together of some of the golden clips I found so that fans and newbies can enjoy as well.

Just like the show, this particular improv game, "Sound effects", was also underrated. The best decision ever on the show was to bring in audience members to provide the sound effects for Ryan and Colin. Just absolute gold! In no particular order:
#1
#2
#3

The following 3 clips are examples of the genuinely hilarious moments that can ensue when one of the comedians (almost always Colin, but sometimes Ryan and Drew) is so outrageously funny that even the others are blown away and left speechless. Again, in no particular order:
Meow
Censored
You got sole

This is probably one of the two greatest of the "Greatest hits" game. Almost all of these games showcase Wayne's amazing versatility at singing, so I picked the ones that had the best banter between Ryan and Colin. There's another one that's equally good, but I had trouble finding that. Will edit and post tomorrow if anyone requests. The second one listed here is quite good as well, though not as great as the first.
#1
#2

This scene I just fell in love with for no particular reason. Well, that's not entirely true, it had Stephen Colbert as a performer and I had never known that he was on the show. He's awesome in this, as is everyone else. Finally, a rap song with lyrics that are orginial

"Scenes from a hat" is probably one of the more popular games. The only problem with it is that many of them have only 3-4 amazing one-liners, and the rest of the game is just pretty good. Also, you tube has about 40 of these uploaded, and its hard to choose between them since none are really spectacular over the rest.
my #1 fav
my 2nd fav (w/ robin williams)
pretty good
pretty good

"Hoedown" is truly on of the classic games on the show. I've not yet really stumbled on the amazing ones, but here's a pretty good one I've found so far.
Will find more later

Hope you like this collection. And hopefully some non-fans out there will become fans when they see this. (And hopefully this post makes up for my lame ass post earlier in Gen. Discussion)

"QUACK QUACK" rofl Thanks for the laughs. Do you know if they're still making episodes?

Zyr 08-15-2006 03:02 AM

The first, english (as in, england) version will always be the best.

Unfortunately, no!
I believe reruns might be on something like Comedy Central.

I never understood this argument. Atleast a quarter of the jokes in the British version would go straight over my head because you had to be English to get them. Otherwise, they had Greg Poops, Colin Mockrie and Ryan Stiles. So the only things that could have made it better were the other guy and Clive (the host). A lot of people don't like Drew, and I agree that Clive might have been slightly better, but only slightly.

Did you see the one with Richard Simmons? That is by far the funniest skit I have ever seen. I've never looked for it though, but I'm sure you could find it easily.

indeed. and I like drew, but drew is no Clive on that particular show. Original British version for the win.

Here's a greatest hits that contains the funny "Backstreet Boys" reference.

And the "Animal Porn" intro:

And the infamous "Melissa Incident" backed with corresponding hoedown goodness!

The Brit one is better and this one's why. It so wouldn't have been censored in the original.

The "Meow" clip is truly awesome.

Lady Sage 08-25-2006 01:12 PM

Oh thank you so much! You have made me laugh on such a crappy day!!!
This is one of the very few shows I actually miss on TV.

They had a LOT more freedom with the types of things they could say, the subjects they could touch on, stuff like that. They didn't have to keep it all nicey-nice like they do here.

Since this thread showed up, I've been spending the better part of today watching those clips.
I remember seeing the Robin WIlliams one when it first aired and he could barely keep up with the cast.

Elphaba 08-25-2006 07:25 PM

"Who's Line" is new to me, too. There is so much imagination and talent with this group that it's difficult to understand why they were cancelled and crap "reality" shows continue.

Thanks, Balefire!

Really? I remember thinking Robin Williams did quite well, actually. He didn't seem overshadowed by the other regulars, and showed that he's quite talented in improv too.

He was better than, say, Whoppi Goldberg.

Oh, and loved the clips, love the show. Thanks.

Welcome to "Whose line is it anyway: UK edition a.k.a The original edition!"

Narrated Sketch:
This is a game that almost always killed. Basically, the characters explain their thoughts directly to the audience as they act out the scene.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VTXWtUkYJkk

Foreign Film dub:
Another game that usually worked really well. Two cast members improvise a scene in a foreign language, and the other 2 cast members dub it after each bit of dialogue.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PTuSP0G7YVs

Sports commentators:
I'd never actually seen this game. Too bad they seem to have ended it in the American version. Two cast members do sports commentary on a scene being enacted by the other two members.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aC_WDiesAR4

Barroom scene:
Haven't seen this one either. One cast member is a bartender. The other members come in and sing about their problems to the bartender, and the bartender sings back.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zopq3Zq29VQ

Pretty good hoedowns:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oJ7Ch17-_WY
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZF3YxXdIvKw

Clive comes to the US! It's mislabled as UK, but apparently Clive came over to guest host one of the eps. Great rap song again, as usual. And Colin unleases somethign that I would have thought would surely have been bleeped.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A650wAjfWVA

Here are two full episodes, both of which are quite good.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=En8Qr7-Sv5k
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Og7iS79pzOo

And it needs to be said:
Colin Mockrie for President! And Ryan Stiles for Vice-prez. Afterall, if we're gonna elect leaders who fuck up the country, might as well have people who can make us laugh when they do it.

And now, if I might, I'll take this thread in a slightly more serious direction.

So, while I had seen a little bit of the British version of whose line, when I earlier claimed that the US version was better, I'd seen so much of the US version but not too much of the UK version.

So, after watching all the above, as well as some truly ancient clips going back to the 1989 or so, I've drawn the following (hopefully factual) conclusions and my personal thoughts on them.

1) The claim that the UK version was far less uncensored is completely true. The UK version seemed to have almost complete free reign on what they said, so there were a lot more jokes about sex.

I didn't really see this as an advantage for the UK show. To compare to something, I saw it as the difference between Jerry Seinfeld standup and Chris Rock standup. While Seinfeld's is generally much cleaner, Chris rock is far more open in using foul language and delving into explicit sexual topics. And guess what, I love them both. I don't think Seinfeld is any less funny because he limits himself by censoring himself on a personal level.

2) Clive is a more able host than Drew.

I defintely think Clive is a better presenter. The banter exists on both shows, and while Clive might be a little bit more wittier than Drew (purely subjective view on my part), I like the fact that Drew throws himself into the ending game. Also, Clive is a total point Nazi! "No points for you!" Ok, that's not really a serious thought, but still. He gives no points on like 90% of the games. Drew on the other hand, constantly makes up rediculous point totals and it just felt nicer. (Yes, I know the points don't matter, I know I'm being silly, I don't care)

3) There is more banter between Colin and Ryan in the US version.

This is clearly because they've been together longer as the show moved from the UK to the US version. Still, as unfortunate that is for the UK version that the US version came after it, its still an amazing plus for the US version only. Without that banter, many of its top moments would be moments at all.

So overall, I still love the US version. Though, I've gained some respect for the UK version as well.

I have seen Williams go improv too many times to count. I suspect he was being a gracious guest promoting a great improv show.

Yeah, I have to say Robin did more than hold his own in the clips as well.
