Darwinia
Anyone playing this game?
I played through the demo and found myself liking it. Mostly I am curious as to whether or not anyone who has purchased and played the game thinks it is worth the asking price. I believe that right now it is only availabe via Steam, but I am not sure. I am definitely interested in this little gem. It looks like it has some serious potential. If you have not heard of it before and have Steam, download the demo and give it a whirl. |
It seems interesting, but I fucking hate Valve now and I'm trying to avoid buying any mods they get their filthy little fingers into.
Just to qualify part of my rant: Day of Defeat was created originally as a free mod for Half-Life. Someone I know bought Half-Life (with the primary purpose of adding the free mod Day of Defeat), but discovered that, in order to have Day of Defeat work through Steam, you have to pay a fee. Disgusting. I hope Valve goes out of business. |
Vavle is evil, but Darwinia is made by a small independent company who deserves your money. Is it "worth" the asking price? Well, to be honest, I don't think so - I think it would be more "appropriately" priced at $15-20. Is it worth getting though? Yes. And is it worth paying the asking price instead of the price it's actually "worth" in order to help out a small, independent game maker? Abso-fucking-lutely.
Not to mention, it's a really fun little game :) I also hear there are lots of mods you can get for it which make it even better, but I haven't tried any of that out yet. |
You can get it straight from the developer, too. If you're a Mac-ite, you can get it from Ambrosia. Play Uplink too!

Not to thread-jack, nor to necessarily defend Steam, but rather set the record straight about Suave's comments. Unless something changed when I wasn't paying attention, Steam is a free program, and the original Day of Defeat is still a free mod. The new Day of Defeat: Source costs money because the creators of that mod made a business partnership with Valve so they could actually make a buck off of their creation. If your friend was specifically psyched about DoD:S as opposed to the original DoD, then it was very clearly advertised as a product that would cost money and no longer be a free mod. This was done both on Steam's website and the DoD website.
I think there are plenty of reasons to dislike Steam but I just wanted to throw that out there. |
No, this is DoD 1.3 (the original). $9.95 through Steam, and the free downloads I found (ausgamers, etc) even when they were the Steam install with the full DoD cache, did not work.
