Half Life 2

I just downloaded the E3 presentation (it's on FilePlanet, but I got it through BitTorrent) - it's 508mb, 25 min long. I am absolutely amazed. The environments, the graphics, the AI... WOW. This is going to be THE game when it comes out.

It looks life-like! Everything in the game is interactive. You can move anything and break everything... use everything against your opponents too. EVERYTHING! That's what describes this game. "Everything" you ever wanted out of an FPS. Shit, I haven't even played it yet.

Antagony 05-31-2003 10:46 PM

Yes, I saw this the other night at my friend's house. It all looks very impressive.

My favorite part though, has to be how you can notice even the demo machine suffering from lag. Looks like everyone will be upgrading . . .

I've only seen the E3 video, and even that is very impressive. When the hover-jet-flying-thingie crashed to the ground and actually slid towards you, pushing cars and whatnot out of the way -- wow. Very nice.

THE MAC GOD 06-01-2003 03:51 AM

hmmm.... Half Life 2.....

Krycheck 06-01-2003 08:29 PM

I've seen that video at least 10 times. I can't get over it. It's gonna be a thinking mans game.
Made me start playing HL again :D

This will be the first game I ever pre-order.

I need to finish building my new computer before this baby comes out!!

3leggedfrog 06-01-2003 08:44 PM

lol did you guys see the strider spear that guy in the end with its leg. oh man is this going to be THE GAME. can't wait.

whats the release date anyone know?

Krycheck 06-01-2003 09:00 PM

September 16th I belive. I know it's September for sure.

/me counts the days

jsn117 06-01-2003 09:01 PM

just think of all the games that will come off this engine...

fester2blatz 06-01-2003 09:07 PM

I just watched that too. It's unbelievable stuff.

GakFace 06-01-2003 09:15 PM

Telekentetic Gun.....Duels....Telekentetic Gun.....Duels....Telekentetic Gun.....Duels....Telekentetic Gun.....Duels....Telekentetic Gun.....Duels....Telekentetic Gun.....Duels....Telekentetic Gun.....Duels....Telekentetic Gun.....Duels.... heheheh

Nappa 06-02-2003 06:58 AM

Those telekenetic guns look amazing....when the player ripped the radiator out of the wall and used it as a shield, my jaw hit the floor. And when it hurled the sign letters at the strider....very sweet. And it seems as if a lot of those scenarios can play differently almost every time...great replay value.

So many great things. I must have said "HOLY CRAP!!" about a hundred times during the vid.

Omar12 06-02-2003 10:46 AM

I saw the video....just awesome, I want to get the game

deve 06-02-2003 11:19 AM

sept. 30 for the release

Jeff 06-02-2003 05:45 PM

I can't wait. I've never been more amazed by what a game can do.

Bend 06-02-2003 08:29 PM

Considering what the original half-life spawned I am heavily excited to see what this new version can do to the world of PC gaming.

DataMonkey 06-02-2003 08:32 PM

That video is sooooo nice. The graphics requirements concern me though. I guess that my upgrade for DOOM III will be useful for more than one game! :D

Damn that guy's voice in the background of the movie constantly bitching (jokingly) about if his 486 would play that game. Next generation graphics will require a next generation system (or at least the video card and a helluva lot of RAM). Plus, now everyone that downloads the video gets to hear him. Grrr...

I never really played half-life 1, didn't have much interest in it. I think the engine is sweet though, hope a lot of people use it to make kewl games.

Mr.Deflok 06-03-2003 12:16 AM

Amazing physics eh?

Imagine the mod potential *drools*

trav 06-03-2003 01:40 AM

I just downloaded bittorrent....could u tell me the link to the half life video, I wanna check it out. Thx.

Realizm 06-03-2003 05:37 AM

The mod potential is great... but the modders maybe not. I imagine it will take a more significant amount of work making the models and environments to all be interactive with the new physics engine. How many modders will be willing to do this?

On the other hand, those who are willing to do it, will probably be Very Very good.

Another game with a pretty detailed physics engine imo would be Halo. Cars get knocked over, can be launched into the air with grenades, etc. It's pretty cool..

Halo.bungie.org has a lot of the videos of such things.

a_divine_martyr 06-04-2003 10:04 PM

Oh damn... HL2 is going to fucking own so much ass.

dim5 06-04-2003 10:51 PM

Taking a look at the specs for the game, I thought of a line from Matrix Reloaded: "Hm, Upgrades." Oh, well.

THE MAC GOD 06-05-2003 08:58 AM

Yeah... ok... I practically had to tape his eyes open to watch it... he kept saying... "I'll download it later..." and "Carefull what you download" (hes got 100gigs of space)

Anyway, glad i'm right as usual... this game will absolutely rock...

dogsbody 06-06-2003 06:04 AM

One of the great things about Half-Life was the traps that were strategically placed in the game. Like a rotating fan blade that hacked up head crabs or a gun turret to mow down the hordes of aliens teleporting in. And then to learn that in Half-Life 2, there's a whole town filled with booby traps, I thought there's going to be some serious fun.

THE MAC GOD 06-06-2003 09:12 AM

Yeah... I cracked up when I saw the head crab bodies get hacked... and then crawl for you! Damn... its gonna be good...

Dilbert1234567 06-07-2003 09:49 PM

I can't WAIT

ningato 06-10-2003 09:32 PM

yep its omg

well based on sept 30 date they are setting that as ship to manufacture date so they meet the quarter deadline. I would expect it to actually make it in our hands the following month. I can't preorder because every time i preorder i end up seeing it in some other store before my preorder shows up. I too am excited about the mod potential. interestingly there is no indication of any type of multiplayer in the dialog. I wonder if there will be zero multiplayer and that teamfortress 2 will finally ship for multiplayer?

They have mentioned that the Source engine (their name for the HL2 game engine) will automagically scale down to your system, within reason of course. I think they said it would scale down to a P3. I'll see if I can find the post where I saw that and post it here. This is the closest thing I can find right now from planethalflife.com http://www.planethalflife.com/half-life2/

" While the new engine has all sorts of fancy features, it's still designed to scale and work on lower-end machines. Apparently a 700mhz processor and a video card capable of running DX6 is enough, although a 2ghz with a GeForce4 is recommended. Rumors about NVidia or ATI exclusivity are unfounded."

I read an interview with one of the developers where they were talking about modding. They said one of the main reasons that the game has taken so long is the fact that they wanting to make modding even more accessable that in HL2. Hopefully this is truly the case.

Spritebox 06-13-2003 12:36 PM

I'm looking forward to the new Day of Defeat and CS mods...weeeeeeeeeee

THE MAC GOD 06-14-2003 01:24 AM

There's a good chance for a Mac version ... can't wait...

Krycheck 06-14-2003 08:16 AM

There's hope for a linux version too.

I'm hoping that mod support will better than in HL. Pain in the ass getting your favorite mod broken by a new SDK that isn't backward compatable to the previous version. I really hope they learned from they're mistakes.

beerguy 06-14-2003 09:11 AM

If you noticed, before E3 Doom 3 was the hot topic. Now that we have all seen the HL 2 demo doom 3 even looks a little dated.

Here's a little interview with two valve guys. I thought it was an interesting read. These guys really have a great philosophy on designing games.

Good comic... :)

On another note... I dreamt I was playing HL2 last night... hmm... obsessed much?

sykoex 06-20-2003 04:39 PM

My favorite scene is the part dogsbody mentioned when the player switches on the helicopter propellor and the zombies walk right into it and get their torsos sliced. It looks like you can make some real fun use of game's environment.

THE MAC GOD 06-21-2003 06:35 PM

Definitely a great piece!

Vyk 06-25-2003 07:41 PM

Definitely looking forward to this. Though, my pocket book is not :)

*is gonna need to upgrade ye olde gaming machine*

Ragman 06-25-2003 09:13 PM

I can't wait for this, but I'm afraid I need a new computer very badly in order to be able to see its graphical goodness.

zcwrx 06-25-2003 09:54 PM

I've been upgrading my hardware in anticipation...

YaWhateva 06-25-2003 11:00 PM

Dunno if you know about it but you can preorder Half-Life 2 at EB games now.

I think Half-Life 2 will kick Doom III's ass.

MrGone 06-25-2003 11:07 PM

i need to see this

bobstar 06-25-2003 11:34 PM

I believe this game will be a trend setter and a classic for years to come, just like Half Life

TenDeuChen 06-25-2003 11:43 PM

must...see...hl2...video..now!!! :) can't wait for this...omg...it's going to be great...doom 3 won't be too shabby either though...

hope my p41.5ghz/geforce4 will handle them nice enough not to make me wanna get a fitter, happier, more productive machine...

(can anyone guess what i'm listening to...lol)

Nappa 06-25-2003 11:47 PM

Once I have HL2, Deus Ex 2, and Doom 3 I plan to hibernate in my apartment for an entire month. Good time to be a gamer.

Your system can defenitely handle Half-Life 2, they made it with low system requirements, 700 MHz being the minimum. But the graphics are so amazing its hard to believe that 1.5 GHz with a Geforce 4 is the recommended system setup(which it is).

Arm 06-26-2003 12:44 AM

I almost don't even care about the game itself...that engine looks incredible.

What's really going to be interesting though is to see how long it takes for the community of HL (i.e. CS, TFC, DoD) to come out with hl2 versions. Also, it'll be interesting to see if the aforementioned new versions come anywhere near to the current ones in terms of popularity; I know a lot of mods have not retained the same numbers when switched to a newer engine (AQ2 to RQ3, for instance).

THE MAC GOD 06-26-2003 07:42 AM

well, galaxies is now shipping... just thought I would pass that along

Minimum requirements mean nothing. But i do believe a 1.5 w/ at least a gf4 5200 should be ok. My radeon 9800pro & athlon 2700+ is a little more desirable.

no the minimum requirements are a 700 MHz pentium 3 with a geforce 2 and 256 megs of RAM. what I said is what they estimate you can play the game on with everything set to full.

zcwrx 06-26-2003 08:46 PM

yeah if 10fps is ok.

YaWhateva 06-26-2003 08:50 PM

lol, but they did say that this game will require a surprisingly low end machine to play full, they are making it like half-life 1 so that everyone can play, at least thats what they are saying.

zcwrx 06-26-2003 08:54 PM

Hard to believe by the video, but I read the same thing in CGW. That'll be nice for some, but I got my card and proc. just for games like this and I can not wait!!!

YaWhateva 06-26-2003 08:55 PM

me too. I just got my nice new processor just came in today.

F2.8 06-27-2003 05:44 AM

I was at a loss for words when watching this video. The thing that really caught my attention is how they designed their speech engine. One can record a sound and the modeling/speech engine will move the model's lips to mouth-out the words fairly accurately. That is innovation!

I am building a box just for this game.... sigh, and I though I was beyond that!

nico 06-27-2003 09:41 PM

Definitely looks to be a promising game

Jack Ruby 06-29-2003 12:10 PM

The video looks awesome. Fuck John Carmack and his "I'm a genius, I'll do it all by myself" attitude. I admit, Carmack is a genius but if I have to choose between one genius programmer and ten really good ones, I'll take the second choice. All the work that's obviously gone in both the technology and the game itself has definetly paid off - id Software's "basement developer" philosophy clearly doesn't work anymore for first-person shooters.

The thing I love most though is the comeback of the old scientist, and of course - the G-Man. Say what you want about Half-Life's ending, but I loved how the G-Man sort of explained the story without giving you the underlying motives for what had happened. Let's hope this gets cleared up in HL2.

"Well, Mr Freeman... Looks like it'll be just like old times." =)

Bonesaw 06-29-2003 06:55 PM

must replay HL. Nothing else good out right now worth playing.

The_Dude 06-29-2003 07:25 PM

I saw this movie at a lan party....wow. They gaming industry always says "Oh, this game will change gaming forever." Some games do that some, most games don't. If there was one game that was going to turn the industry on it's head, it is HL2. I can't even believe it looks soo good!

I am a crazy DX player, and we (the rest of the crazy DX players) have been reading the Ion Storm forums to find out terrible news for DX2, like NO INVENTORY, and ALL weapons use ONE IDENTITCAL TYPE OF AMMO... BTW if anyone else plays DXMP then hit me up ingame, I am {Ø}Hydraulic.

I saw a video...of it from E3, the lighting (VERY cool) and the engine look amazing but gameplay is going to SUCK.

Also, is there a HL2 page I can get to for system requirements? I think all that has been mentioned here is about the video, and I'm on dialup! ha ha - so a 500 MB video won't quite do it for me.

PEACE (my first post!)

From311 07-02-2003 01:34 PM

Oh I forgot -

In addition to DX2 sucking, the user interface will be EXACTLY THE SAME for PC as for X-Box versions of DX2. This is because the people at Eidos and Ion Storm are little bitches and only want money.

DON'T BUY DX2!

TIO 07-03-2003 09:42 AM

I admit, I was dumbstruck at the HL2 video, but stepping back from it, there's really nothing there that's new; it's all just improvements on the same old ideas. The last big leap in FPS was the death of sprites; nothing new has happened since.

(Still, I can't wait to play it!)

From311 07-03-2003 11:27 AM

Ha ha sprites were terrible - remember the old Doom and Doom 2? There were only 2 angles you could see the demons at, and only angle you could see dead bodies from.

Caser 07-28-2003 09:00 AM

all i have to say about half life 2 is COME OUT ALREADY

STOP HIDING...ITS SAFE TO COME OUT

hahaha

acpower 08-01-2003 03:56 PM

it's going to be the coolest frikken game in the world

Looften 08-01-2003 05:29 PM

The graphics are impressive, but most of the really cool moments both in Half-life, and I'm sure in half-life 2, are the scripted ones. Scripted events depend more on the storytelling abilites of the creators than graphics of physics. It's all well and good to use fire extinguisers and helicopter blades, but if those items are placed there, it's generally intended for you to use them. No game creator in this genre is going to be surprised at they player's inginuity.

I hope Valve makes a game as good as half-life, but they haven't done much except sitting pretty for quite awhile. Lets hope they didn't lose their edge.

Jeff 08-02-2003 12:56 PM

I've been hearing rumors about delays to HL2. Wouldn't surprise me if they pushed it back to December.

mrquackers 08-02-2003 04:46 PM

That's certainly possible, Jeff, but Valve itself has denied those rumors. And Sierra, which is where some people were reporting they got started, has said there's no delay at this point.

Other developers and publishers began sniping HL2 at E3, when I went to see them for various appointments. The cone of silence breeds skepticism, definitely. But I also got the feeling they saw their sales during the holiday sales period in danger of slipping considerably.

portwineboy 08-02-2003 05:48 PM

I've been dling the vids from fileshack in the last week. Same stuff as the E3 promo vids but much better quality. The game looks completely amazing....but how will the storyline be? HL grabbed me because the storyline was amazing AND interactive. I may not have played a role in developing the story ala Deus Ex or Blade Runner, but I certainly felt like I was part of it.

Doom3, HL2, Deus Ex2...yep, I'll buy 'em all, but you know that they won't ALL be good. C'mon boys and girls, you weren't all THAT good this year, Santa won't be that nice to y'all.

My bet, one kicks ass, one looks great, one sucks entirely. No clue which way it will roll though.

"One kicks ass": DooM3
"One looks great": Half-Life 2
"One sucks entirely": Deus Ex 2

Those are my picks.

YaWhateva 08-02-2003 11:12 PM

man i dunno, i think Doom3 and Half-Life 2 are gonna kick ass and look great in their own ways. Doom 3 will be more of a fantasy type of looking great and a scary, destroy evil monsters type of kick ass, whereas Half-Life 2 will look fuckin realistic as hell, and will be more of the half-life type of kicking ass.

ningato 08-03-2003 12:35 AM

I am now the proud owner of a half life 2 playing machine. p4 3ghz 1gb ram ati 9800 pro 128mb. Man All these other games I play look fantastic now too. Now I just have to wait till christmas to get halflife 2....

Tickford 08-03-2003 06:23 AM

Cant wait for it....... I will be needing a new PC.... :(

rockbehemoth 08-03-2003 08:52 AM

That demo looks great!
I'm already telling my girlfriend to clear her shit off my computer and put it on hers, 'cause I'm gonna need every drop of memory and processing power my Dell can muster for HL2.
I love the fact that you can manipulate ANYTHING and everything. I think this game is really gonna re-set the bar.
