Guild Wars and *gasp* Dial-Up
Yeah yeah, I still have dial-up at home, but many of my friends have Guild Wars. Does anyone here on the boards run Guild Wards on dial-up? According to the Guild Wars website FAQ, the game is designed to work well with dial-up, but in actuality, does it work well?
|
That's like saying CS works with dial up. Theoretically, it does work. Assuming equal skill level, will you ever kill anyone using broadband? Not nearly as often as they kill you.
|
one of my friends has it on dialup and he says it plays just fine, never actually seen it on his dialup myself though.
|
I have a couple of co-workers that play it on dial-up, and they complain about it lagging occasionally, mainly when there is a large number of people on the servers, but for the most part they have no problems.
|
dial up works fine, but only when it's not busy, in actuality, when the servers are packed, most times you can't even get in the game and your dial-up will just disconnect.
but at later times or early in the morning, Guild Wars will work fine. |
I would imagine that if there are too many mage types casting graphic heavy spells, you will run into problems.
I guess the best way to put it is, PvP might not be the best idea (CS analogy), while PvE should be ok |
I don't have dial up, but I'd think it'd work fine. I used to play EQ on dial up, usually didn't have lag, could play fine most of the time. Besides downloading speeds, and always on, there isn't that much difference between the two. Cable is only a bit more stable.

Well.. if youre going to be playing an MMORPG, no matter what it is, you're going to eventually run into a time when they patch the game. Keep in mind that you will have to download the patch to be able to play. Now lets say there is a new patch that adds a new zone, mob, drop, skin.. anything. That file can be a few kb up to a few hundred mbs. How long will that take on dial up?
Other than that, its going to be basically the same - everyone gets lag. |
Well my deal is that I'm home for the summer (whats left of it) and my friends have been nagging at me for not getting Guild Wars. I only have dial-up at home, but at school 802.11b rules the air. I'll be going back to school soon anyways but it'll be nice to be able to play Guild Wars while at home too.

Frequent streaming updates over Guild Wars, so you won't have to worry about hundred meg patches, etc. I've seen some people do fine with dial-up, just a bit slow on the initial loading, while others completely lag out before the PvP match starts. Some of the lag issues will depend on your processor and vid card still. Ah, you may load very slow the first time playing a map. Should load a lot quicker the next time around. |
Thanks for the update, thriolith. :)

Honestly, that's my biggest complaint with WoW. The spell effects are lame as hell.
