Final Fantasy for Xbox? You don't say!

Well, for some reason I was thinking about Square-Enix today, probably because of all the Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children stuff I've been posting lately. My thinking took me to the internet:

Interesting article on square-enix.com

...announced that FINAL FANTASY® XI will be released on Xbox 360™, Microsoft's next-generation gaming console, and Xbox Live, the company’s premier online gaming service. The partnership was announced at Microsoft's Media Briefing held in Los Angeles on May 16th. Xbox 360 will be available this holiday season.
But..but..but...Square signed a contract with sony, right? RIGHT! they DID...this is where the fun part comes in. That contract expires around this time if they're porting FFXI to xbox. ;)

Know what this means? It means Square-Enix can and WILL be making games for the xbox. My life is complete.

Discuss!

With SE's love of graphics that require bleeding edge machines to run properly and their cutscenes up on side and down the other reading the announcement about the SE/Xbox 360 partnership gave me joygasms. Now I just have to justify buying another freaking console.

akito 05-19-2005 03:59 PM

glad to be your joygasm supplier liquidlight, haha. :)

It's a direct port of the PS2 game. No graphical improvements.

Jesus Pimp 05-19-2005 07:02 PM

They should of used the PC version. It was graphically better than the PS2 version.

Just for those who are in need of proof of my earlier statement.

E3: No graphics update for FFXI on Xbox 360

Square Enix' massively multiplayer title set to be a straight port of existing version

The version of Square Enix' massively multiplayer title Final Fantasy XI which was announced with a fanfare for Xbox 360 earlier this week will not feature any major enhancements over the existing PS2 and PC versions of the game, representatives of the firm have confirmed.

Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz at E3, Japanese representatives of Square Enix said that the game would be "exactly the same", with the only update being the addition of HDTV resolutions. No new models or environments will be added to the game, which will run on the same servers as the PC and PS2 editions.

The company also revealed that Final Fantasy XI was originally in development for the current generation Xbox console, but that an agreement couldn't be reached with Microsoft that would allow Square Enix to implement its custom PlayOnline online gaming service on Xbox Live.

The restrictions on this have been eased significantly with the Xbox 360, the firm's spokespeople explained, and players will log into PlayOnline in order to play FFXI, not the Live service.

The team lauded the ease of development of the Xbox 360, saying that it took them just two to three months to get the game up and running on the platform, and said that it hopes to expand the audience for FFXI by moving to the new platform - especially in Europe, where this will be the first console version of the game to be made available.

Is there any kind of single player aspect at all with this title or is it online only?

I am pretty sure its multiplayer but cant be 100%

Carno 05-21-2005 03:18 PM

FF XI may be a straight port, but future games might not be.

Anyone else miss the Nintendo FF days? I want to see the series revolutionized!

It's 100% online multiplayer.

Square-Enix is going to be a full third party. Games are planned for Revolution, Xbox-360, and PS3. Joygasm for all!!!

http://cube.ign.com/articles/615/615089p1.html

""Miyamoto is challenging his teams to create something new." His new creation will debut with Revolution. Big franchises will of course be there -- including new versions of Mario and Zelda. Short (pre-rendered) Metroid Prime 3 clip showing Samus standing in front of her redesigned spaceship. "We expect strong third-party support in both hemispheres." For example, Square Enix is already working on Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles for Revolution."

I know I read this in other places too, but this is just one link I found easily.

Mean sauce. I'd be kinda gutted if it was only X-box to be honest, because, i'm a total playstation boy and i'd feel incomplete if final fantasy wasn't on the new machine.. i mean.. i'd have to go and buy an X-box... *shivers* ;)

This is only a port of an old game. It doesn't necessarily mean FF XIII is coming out for X-Box. Don't get your hopes up yet. I believe Sony owned something like 30% of Squaresoft (before the merger with Enix), so that was why they exclusively made PS2 games for a while. Or at least the Final Fantasy line, if you count Crystal Chronicals and Tactics as different lines, or offshoots of the standard numbering system. I'm tired and making little sense to myself, so don't quote me on this :P

Personally, I'm leaning towards PS3, and vowing to only buy into one console this time around, so I'm hoping PS3 gets the FF base series a third time.

Locke7 06-06-2005 08:00 AM

This news is sort of a yawn. PS3 will be superior to XBOX 360, at least that's what the specs say. So you would want to play the next FF versions on PS3 anyways.

Gone are the days that the Microsoft console can say, but we have better graphics. Now that it is a level playing field, Microsoft needs some big names to come over and develop for them.

Final Fantasy XI Team Works on New Project
New title to be next generation massively multiplayer Online RPG.
by IGN Staff

June 8, 2005 - In an interview published in the latest issue of Famitsu, Final Fantasy XI producer Hiromichi Tanaka makes mention of some of the projects on which his staff is currently working, including new Final Fantasy XI properties and a brand new next generation massively multiplayer Online RPG.

Tanaka does not commit to the identity of the next generation title, stating that it may be a successor to FFXI, or it may be a completely separate property. He does admit that the mysterious demo clip shown at Microsoft's Xbox 360 E3 press conference was an early look at the game, which is currently in the "research" stage of development.

As for the title's platform, Tanaka is again a bit too shy to talk. He doesn't specifically state that the game is coming to the Xbox 360. He does, however, state that the PlayStation 3 will probably need a hard disk in order to see Final Fantasy XI-style games, stating he was surprised to hear that Sony is considering not including a hard disk with the system.

Regarding the Xbox 360 version of Final Fantasy XI, Tanaka reveals that the title will be close to the Windows version of the game in terms of quality, which means it will be far superior to the PS2 version. The team is still working on the title, but they're hoping to improve viewing distance many times beyond that of PC version. Tanaka feels that once people have played the game in high definition wide screen format, they won't be able to go back.

As mentioned previously here at IGN Xbox, Square Enix will hold a beta test for Final Fantasy XI at the Xbox 360's launch later this year (no word yet on if this beta test will be Japan-only or if it will also take place in America). The beta test will make use of a special server separate from the other versions of the game. The purpose of the beta test, Tanaka reveals, is to see how Xbox Live handles connecting to Play Online, which is something that's being done for the first time with Microsoft's closed Online system.

There's more in store for Final Fantasy XI following the release of the Xbox 360 version. In addition to periodic updates for all versions of the game, the FFXI team is currently working a full-fledged expansion pack that should extend the life of the product.
So that bit of video that Square-Enix showed at E3 was a new MMORPG, not FFXI. Not that I care about Square-Enix or FF games, but its good to see that MS is getting some good Japanese support this round.
