Games everyone loves but you hate

Who has played games that get outstanding reviews and praise from anyone who plays them, but you just plain don't like them?

For me it was Metroid Prime. The funny thing is, I love first person shooters, I love puzzle games, I love platformers, and I love the 2d Metroids, but this game just bored me beyond belief.

Anyone out there have any similar experiences?

lukethebandgeek 01-16-2005 07:36 AM

Halo multiplayer. I can't stand it, it's so boring. Also, Disgeia and La Pucelle. They just look so boring and washed out and all the menus. God...

Rudel73 01-16-2005 08:51 AM

Starcraft and Warcraft....actually pretty much any Blizzard game. They are just I dont know, every game they make seems to be the same thing with newer flashy graphics

The Magic 01-16-2005 10:09 AM

Halo.

cheap version of tribes 2 with crappier maps~

lpj8 01-16-2005 10:16 AM

All of the Grand Theft Auto games. They are good for the first hour or so, but then become boring.

Ganguro 01-16-2005 10:32 AM

Halo, GTA series, Most turn based RPGs, most FPS, most sports games... can you see a trend here?

Ace_O_Spades 01-16-2005 11:48 AM

Halo, Halo 2, GTA Series

They're just no fun for me at all

derektor 01-16-2005 11:54 AM

i'm with ace on this one. but then again, i've become a slave to console games over the years.

Tribes 2 is shit

Resident Evil 4 sucks as well. They have slowly abandoned the original concept. Half Life and Half life 2 as well as all mmorpg's are bad.

GTA is ok for an hour like stated earlier but after that its meh
Halo multiplayer is really annoying when your against people who play it all the time and then start patting themselves on the back going "Yeah! I fucked you up!" and the best response is something along the lines of "yeah man, good job on killing me seeing as how ive played the game twice, you rock"

Carno 01-16-2005 04:09 PM

So you only hate it because you're not very good at it?

One game I dislike is Crimson Skies.. I really don't understand why everyone likes it so much. Especially online. It's boring. The PC version was much better, imo.

El Kaz 01-16-2005 04:22 PM

Every and any racing game, Gran Turismo series probably being the most popular in the racing genre, and I just can't stand it.

I don't get along with most FPS either. Half-Life2 is probably the one I liked the most so far, and Halo I can tolerate, but "realistic" historical shooter such as Battlefield: Vietnam (or 1942) are really boring me.

Rdr4evr 01-16-2005 04:27 PM

Halo, what a piece of crap.

Ripsaw 01-16-2005 05:02 PM

GTA series. If I wanted to carjack someone or beat a ho, I would. And any of the historical Battlefield series. People actually died during those events. It is not a game.

omega2K4 01-16-2005 05:08 PM

Any Gran Turismo game, any Final Fantasy game, any Resident Evil game. Pretty much everything by Capcom and Squaresoft/Square-Enix (Except for the old Dragon Warrior/Dragon Quest games, those were cool), it seems every new game they make is the same as the last game.

CityOfAngels 01-16-2005 05:46 PM

I must say I'm surprised by a lot of the responses in this thread. To those who say, "All of the GTA games," have you actually played ALL of the GTA games? The only time I was ever bored while playing San Andreas was AFTER I had beaten it, and had no more missions to complete. The same with Vice City. You need to complete missions to truly experience the games. Many people start one up, thinking the game is all about running around, killing as many people as you can, and stealing as many cars as you can. Of course you'll get bored doing that. What many of these people don't realize is there are missions to complete that add substance to the game.

Bah. As for me, I'd have to say just about any racing game I've played other than Super Mario Kart, F-Zero, and the first Gran Turismo. Not that all the other games are bad, but they're....all...THE SAME!

SiNai 01-16-2005 05:48 PM

Majora's mask.. I loved all other Zelda titles I've ever played, and even tolerated windwaker

Homey_V 01-16-2005 06:01 PM

Half-Life 2, Halo, GTA3 and Up. Yes, I played all the missions, they were still boring and repetetive. I couldnt stand Zelda: The Wind-Wanker. Most of the FF games that I have played bored me as well.

junglistic 01-16-2005 06:42 PM

Halo 1/2

man i cant understand who you guys dont like the GTA series,

right from the dos version of #1 it has been my alltime fav game, and with san andreas the bar was pushed even higher. I beleive it to be the one 'perfect' game to rule them all..

haha that came out wrong but im drunk and it sounded good in my head muahaha

buclao 01-16-2005 08:13 PM

Halo- It's not that I hate it, I'm just indifferent and don't think that it's the greatest ever. It's just another stereotypical first person shooter to me.

MGS- I feel that the controls are twitchy and their is just too much emphasis on cinematics instead of gameplay. There I said it...

You must've had something going on with the game if you played all the missions from GTA3, Vice City, and San Andreas.

Hanabal 01-16-2005 08:44 PM

id have to say halo,

and gta - the missions get repetative fast and boring.
quake was crap as well. apart from the whole technological point, but the game was pretty horrible. same as quake 3. oh and doom3 and doom 2 come to think of it. doom 1 was great tho.

warcraft 1 was bad. woah now that brought back memories.

i can think of a few games that were the opposite, everyone said they sucked but i loved them. Star wars rebellion comes to mind.

Mephisto2 01-16-2005 09:03 PM

Doom 3

Mr Mephisto

Mr.Deflok 01-16-2005 09:33 PM

Half-Life 2, nice physics (which aren't proprietary) and ok graphics, but my god I've never played a more boring FPS game in my entire life.

CyCo PL 01-16-2005 10:19 PM

World of Warcraft

actually i dont hate it... just got boring too fast for me, too much like diablo. and on that note, I hate diablo and diablo 2.

NeverBorn 01-16-2005 11:33 PM

Any Zelda after the first one, Metroid Prime (1 and 2)

twotimesadingo 01-17-2005 12:56 AM

Final Fantasy Seven.

I hate the fuckers who treasure/worship this game, but when I ask them what it was about, they utilize and endless stream of "Ummm"s, "Well"s, and other placeholders signifying that the game was about as comprehensible as the time I banged Ashley Judd.

Eight 01-17-2005 02:33 AM

Doom 3 - (nince engine just dont like the game)
Halo
Counter Strike 1.? (How ever I do play CS:S now and again, dont like it much but stuck for a good MP game)
UT200? (all of them, and yea I have played all of them :) they all make me feel sea sick)

jwoody 01-17-2005 03:48 AM

The entire First Person Shooter genre.

Farcry. I may go back and re-try it to make sure.

Any Age of ... game. Never quite liked their take on the RTS game.

Wingless 01-17-2005 08:14 AM

Grand Theft Auto III+

I started playing it, got through about 10 missions or so, got bored of it, looked up the cheats, started majorly blowing shit up, got bored of blowing shit up...

And when I'm at a friends house and he shows me GTA, he always uses a cheat code to accomplish and to show off shit. Doesn't that defeat the purpose?

Glad I only spent $5 on it.

lpj8 01-17-2005 09:45 AM

Yep, I've played GTA 3, Vice and San Adreas. From my experience, they are just boring after a while. After the whole "cool I can do whatever I want" wears off, the GTA games just don't offer much up for me.

I have the same reaction that you do when people say Halo is crap, because I have such fond memories playing Halo Multiplayer way to much with my college buddies.
I guess thats why they make a ton of video games this year, so everyone can find something they enjoy.

THANK YOU! Someone who agrees with my points about that slapshod excuse for a game!

aurigus 01-17-2005 11:00 AM

The game for me that is most annoying is the whole Sims franchise, Sim 2, Sims blah blah blah, Urbz, etc.

I tried it but I did not see a point in playing a "computer game" life that I could be doing in real life.

Maybe they never played far enough into the game to see the story tied together.

The summons were beautiful, the story was well-developed, the graphics were solid for its time, the bonuses were very rewarding and very challenging, and the characters were very distinguished. It was a very good game. Especially for when it was realeased. Just look at when it came out.

I was also bored of Far Cry when I started. I just didn't get the appeal of a FPS on a sunny tropical island. Just didn't click at first. I put it down for a long time then tried it again when I had nothing better to do. After a while I started to understand the appeal. In the end it was actually a lot of fun with some interesting surprises in store. Try it again at some point.

longbough 01-17-2005 11:52 AM

I don't understand the appeal of the Sim series from Sim City to the Sims. I never tried the Sims but maybe someone can explain the novelty of this game.

irateplatypus 01-17-2005 02:07 PM

halo - i guess i don't hate the game... i just don't see why people go bonkers over it. it seems like a run-of-the-mill fps to me.

gta - sluggish controls, poor graphics, weak story. beyond the cheap thrills of violence there just isn't much to it.

unreal tournament - the whole engine seems to be "off" for me. everyone in the office used to play this after hours... i just couldn't get into it. maybe it's cause i sucked so bad.

final fantasy X - i like the FF series (especially from FFVII on back), but this was just a long cut scene broken by short opportunities to steer your character to another cutscene. haven't played a FF since.

king of fighters - tried and tried to like this one as much as street fighter. i mean, i really wanted to like this. but, even after that, the control seemed sluggish and the moveset seemed ineloquent when trying to execute what i wanted to do.

resident evil - control was awful. the game seemed to rely a lot of scaring you for its effect, something i never got from it.

metal gear solid 2 - i felt the first metal gear solid did a lot to advance the series but the second was a just a setpiece to show off storytelling and graphical sharpness... not to be fun.

biznatch 01-17-2005 05:58 PM

I disagree. GTA rules... who doesnt feel the excitement of flying a plane and jumping out, skydiving while watching your plane crash in the distance, then take an ATV or buggy and ride at full speed through the desert/canyon?
Or conquering rival gang territory while having 1992 tupac songs on the radio...
Modding your car with Nos, hydraulics...rims..
are you kidding? this game is the shit.

Amen! They seem fun at first. Especially when you start one with several friends. However, when you start to realize that you play for hours with little or no progress or you work hard to work up your character to get into a high level guild...enabling you to play even more within the guild competing with fellow guild members so you can get some stupid ass weapon or tunic. I realized my actual school and job was less stressful than playing an mmorpg.

Ditto. MMORPGs are boring.

I also forgot to add any of the Metroid games to my list, they are so fucking boring. I don't understand why people go apeshit over them whenever one is released.

Any and all japanese style rpg games (aka Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger). A bunch of boring, insepid crap, with cutesy characters and woe-is-me sob story bullshit. Throw in a fucking idiotic excuse for a fighting system and overly long plot development. Waste of goddamn time if you ask me.

Racing games like Gran Turismo and Burnout 3.

I actually downloaded Burnout 3 because it got such GREAT reviews, but goddamn it's like... no different than any other racing game. I kinda sat there scratching my head trying to figure out why this one is so much better.

Coppertop 01-18-2005 01:53 PM

Any fighting game. They just don't do anything for me. Except for Bushido Blade, that one was pretty cool.

Lunatic 01-19-2005 04:36 AM

Any Resident Evil Game, Tried to play a couple of times, but I never got myself to start liking it.

RogueHunter65 01-19-2005 03:59 PM

I hate metal gear solid games....All you do is sneak around and not kill people. Of course they (enemy soldiers) have machine guns but I'll stick to my tranquilizer gun. Its an action game that is light on the action!?!

The covert aspect of the game is just a pain. Even few minutes a guy gets a exclamation mark over his head then a set of beeping noises occurs which some how alerts like 5 guys to come and attack me. Other people love this game…I guess I just don’t get it.

Lol then I'm the fucker who treasures Final Fantasy VII and can actually tell you what it's about.

And on that note, strike another vote here for Halo/Halo 2. I don't see why these games have such a 'this is the greatest game ever!' following. It's just another FPS if you ask me. The multiplayer is extremely overrated too. Granted it is fun to some ppl, the only things I find fun about it are sniping ppl like a pansy, using the energy knife thing for one hit kills, and whacking ppl with the gun itself rather than shooting at them. If I played like I were supposed to, then it would be extremely boring, lol, thats just my opinion, though.

I'm sorry. You did not just say that. *angry fanboy look*
no just kidding. but I love the game. It's what it says "Tactical Espionage Action"
you have to move smartly. Spies don't sneak by spraying away with AK 47s...

Kadath 01-20-2005 06:21 AM

Yeah, I got MGS:TTS for my cube because I'd never finished the original version, and I really hate tactical espionage simulators. Stealth gets old. One reason I enjoyed Syphon Filter more was they mixed it up; it wasn't always sneaking around. I finished the game, but I'll never play it again.

Baldur's Gate II, sacreligious, I know, but I just can't get into it. It's too big. I get out of the first dungeon and you're in a city with about 8 million options and I get overwhelmed and uninstall the game. It's happened three times now. I don't want a railed shooter, but give me a little help, please. I was able to handle BG I and Icewind Dale, because with those there's a little more structure, but I guess I'm too lazy to handle BG II.

sailor 01-20-2005 07:08 AM

Im not the huge fan of World of Warcraft. My roommate has been playing it like its his job, and I created my own character on his account and have played with it for a few days... And its fun, but certainly not worth all the hype everyone gives it.

Although, I dont think this is so much the fault of the game as it is the genre. I find them utterly repetitive. Hack, slash, loot. Hack, slash, loot. Lather, rinse, repeat.

thespian86 01-20-2005 07:24 AM

sinjien 01-22-2005 12:03 AM

Many of the 'popular' games do suck though..and in the world of gaming ones own opinion matters most. Here's my list of crap titles that everyone keeps playing in their ignorance:

Madden (yeah i said it...God i fucking hate this one)
GTA (same shit, different race)
Starcraft
Everquest (the ultimate soul leecher; those who play this game don't exist to anyone who knew them)
Resident Evil
Oh yeah ...DDR...what the hell is that!?!

biznatch 01-22-2005 07:57 AM

Well if you guys can't have some fun with games that are desined during years for great gameplay..
I don't know. Most of the games you've mentioned are good.
I don't see why, automatically, when a game's rating is high, you want to criticize it and find every flaw. Admit that when you can have more than 20 hours of gaming that's genuine fun, it's a good game.
damn.

Bratwurst 01-22-2005 11:47 AM

I would have to say KOTOR. I like RPGs for the most part, but I fired this game up and I just got bored way too fast. It seemed like just trying to do the simplest task took 5 clicks and multiple stops in action.

I think I am a very very small minority here on this one. Maybe I need to give the game another shot.

Hanabal 01-22-2005 12:06 PM

if i got 20 hours of fun from a game then yes it would be good. but the games people have been listing did not give them 20 hours.

GTA is one for me. it agve me a total of about 3 hours of fun. Then it was boring beyond belief.

The main reason I stuck with halo was cause i remember way back when I saw a video of it (before tribes 1) and thinking that looked like the shit. It looked the same when it came out like 5 years later. I finished it for nostalga cause it wasnt giving me fun.

Ill add baulders gate 1 and 2 as they did not give me 20 hours. and neverwinter nights as well.

Dwayne 01-22-2005 04:01 PM

Played all the GTAs, were AWSOME for the first hour or 6 then, I just put them away. Never got into Half Life. Final Fantasy never realy interested me and Sports Games Entertain me for all of 5 minutes.

Derwood 01-23-2005 07:56 AM

12 hours? If i go past one I'll start slapping my opponent, because the game gets so childish "oooh watch out for my laser cannon!"..."Hah! DUDE, Yoshi put you in an egg!"
So it gets me bored after a little while...But I do like the concept of the game, if not played too long.

I love gaming. Period. I judge games on a case by case basis after looking at every judge-able aspect of them. Yes, I love the GTA franchise. I love the Resident Evil franchise. Hideo Kojima is a brilliant man. Gabe Newell, despite his laziness, is a brilliant man. I enjoy the FPS genre. I enjoy EA's trust over sports games. I enjoy racing, whether it be ridge, Gran Turismo, or Need for Speed. I enjoy my RPGs, whether they are turn based, point-and-click, pause-and-activate, or even first person.

What I hate, however, are people who refuse to look at what positive things a game might have to offer. I hate people who don't even try to get into the game, and dismiss it as crap.

I'd love it if people didn't feel the need to turn this into a fight. I disagree with some of the opinions in here, but I don't need to argue with people about it -- That's what "Politics" is for, people! :)

Hanabal 01-23-2005 06:42 PM

this thread is meant to be about listing games that people were dissapointed with and it was not designed for people to jump out and defend these games.

people have different tastes.

please leave the attacks out of this thread. I dont appreciate people assuming that i dont try to get into games after i spend my own money purchasing them. Sure almost all games have some good points - that doesnt mean they are good, and most certainly does not mean that I will enjoy them. even if everyone else does.

WoW, Vice City, FFXI, all first person shooters that are not for the computer

ironchefkorea 01-23-2005 10:12 PM

I'm used to forums that are a tad more agressive (spf). I'm not saying that everyone is judging games poorly, but there are posts in here that are definitely of that disposition.

reiii 01-23-2005 11:33 PM

halo, gta, most turnbased rpgs, most sports games....wait no, ALL sports games.

Dibbler 01-28-2005 11:50 AM

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Starcraft. GTA was ok but not fun for more than a short amount of time. I just didn't get the hype. Starcraft was the biggest piece of crap game I ever bought. Cheap AI.

Well, its not really a discussion if people who don't agree don't show their point of view... You might as well make a list of all these famous games people like to discredit and then close the thread..
Its a discussion forum.

I wasn't as taken with Shogun as I thought I would be. Maybe I was too psyched up about it after reading a number of reviews, all glowing. I even started reading the art of war in preparation for it.

And. Well. The battles were neat. I liked that you could make people run away and that with good leadership you could route armies twice your size without many casualties.

Two days later, five hours of playing under my belt, it was back in the box and back onto playing something else. Since I bought it for a fiver I wasn't that bothered, just felt a little dissapointed I didn't get much else out of it.

Halo/Halo2 sure has come up a lot. I'm indifferent to them, to be honest. It can be fun when you don't know what to expect and you're running around doing the deathmatchly thing of picking up big weapons and suddenly a giant purple flying tank appears and annihilates you. Or when you're trying to bring a vehicle around to a friend for extra support and you end up landing on top of them.

Halo 2
Warcraft
Starcraft
NFS Underground
NFL/NBA Street - If I play a sports game, I want it to be as real as possible.
Super Smash Brothers
Everquest

Rise of Nations. Such a disappointment

Have you played it??? The reason why they can't tell you what it's about is because it is an extremely complex game. It's kind of like explaining why you like Back to the Future or Forrest Gump, you like it, but you don't know why.

On the topic, I like the Madden games and the NBA Live games much less than their Sega Sports/ESPN Videogames counterparts. The basketball games just simply play and look better, and (at least the newest installment on Xbox) the NFL 2k series plays and looks much better than Madden.

Gran Turismo. The depth of customization is amazing, but the races are monotonous, and you need to do so many to get upgrades. Can't wait for Midnight Club DUB edition, but in the meantime, I'll waste lots of money playing Initial D.

Any fps on any console.

Thats fine that you think that they may not have judged the games fairly, but thats no ground to attack their opinion. Perhaps a more subtle approach would be more appropriate.

And remember, Opinions are like Assholes. Everyone's got one, but they arent always good. This however, does not mean you can go around saying "MY ASSHOLE IS BETTER THAN YOURS!", because frankly, thats not a comparison I want to make :p
;)

I love those games too. But could you tell me what you find "good" about Halo and DOOM 3?

Eight 02-15-2005 08:28 AM

Hmm games I hate that everyone likes?

Halo - Boring pile of rubbish
Medal Of honor - Scripted rubbish
Counter Strike - Hmm what the hell is all the fuss about?
Unreal Tournament - Makes me ill
Any sports game thats not motor racing :) lol

hambone 02-15-2005 08:32 AM

Smash Bros. - I just really suck at it and all the people I have ever played with are very good. Makes for a crappy time.

Halo - I think it's the greatest console fps of all time. Among the first to efficiently utilize dual-analog sticks in a console fps (the sticks on the XBox are perfect for fps, by the way - unlike the looseness of the PS2 sticks and that retarded yellow octagon with the GCN).

First of all, it was clean - you can tell that bungie, although rushed to release Halo as a launch title, did their most important job - QA. Far too often am I disappointed by games who had such great potential, and were executed well, but simply fell short because a lack of QA - with Halo, movements were smooth. Aiming was relatively smooth. Granted, there were bugs (many of which are exploit-worthy), but negative glitches were always freak occurences (perhaps I'm one of the lucky ones to have avoided glitches in the original Halo thus far).

Second, the gameplay - like I said, the controls were tight and responsive. Using the triggers for fire/grenade in conjunction with the sticks is perfect. Melee attacks have an excellent weight to them, and are extremely gratifying. Switching weapons (and dual wielding in the sequel) is relatively pain-free (unless weapons fall in stacked positions).

The combat of the game, its selling factor, is ridiculously fun - I don't see how people can find it boring. Maybe you who frown upon the game are simply unchallenged, and should've been playing on legendary. In my eyes, though, I found heroic to be a blast - the AI was good, though not excellent. I found myself having to actually plan my attacks, sticking and moving like a goddamned boxer. Enemies take cover, flank, and use your reloading time as a chance to sneak up on you. What else do people expect from a first person shooter? What makes halo not good?

Third, Immersiveness - and I'll end with this, for now. I'm sure people are will want to retort, which is what I expect from a good forum. The one thing that makes me love video games is immersiveness - plugging in that controller, hitting that button, and being sucked into a different world. When you wake up in that cryotank, you are Master Chief. Bungie's melding of clean, high quality graphics, engaging gameplay, tight controls, excellent audio (sfx and score), and well-paid attention to detail (the troops' comments, covenant's comments, etc) pull a willing (and open minded) player into the game and don't let go.

I feel like a fucking review writer, and a shitty one at that. I'll do Doom 3 another time. Right now, I have more of Resident Evil 4 to be playing.

ranger 02-18-2005 06:00 AM

Any Zelda after and before the Ocarina of Time. With special emphasis on majora's mask and windwaker.

Also hate all racing games because they are all so repetitve (and probaly because i suck at them)... the only way i can stand to play a racing game is if i am at the arcade , sitting down, using pedals and shifting manually. I'll bear it long enough to humor my little brother.
