Resident Evil 4
I can't wait to play this game!
I was never into the survival horror stuff much, but after playing 'Eternal Darkness' on the Gamecube I decided to pick up the first Resident Evil (which is actually a remake of the original). The game blew me away, the graphics is some of the best Ive seen, and the game is scary as hell. As soon as Im finished with Resident Evil, Im going to pick up RE4 (releases next week). The camera is now fixed behind the player, and a lot of other gameplay mechanic improvements have been made. I just read the IGN review: 9.8 ! IGN review Quote:
Edit: Bestbuy.com - Gamecube + RE4 Just saw this on Bestbuy .. buy a gamecube ($99.99) and RE4 ($49.99) and get a $20 coupon |
I played the demo yesterday at EB. I have to say, wow I am impressed. I have been a RE fan for years, I have played/beaten every title. The controls do take a bit to get used to but the game just plays nice..... The graphics are beautiful! I am going to have to pick this one up.
|
I hope it's actually scary. Resident Evil, while fun, has really suffered in the "terror" department with it's last few sequels, especially when compared to the horrific environments of Silent Hill and its sequels.
When I play these games, I want to be scared, or at least get the general discomfort and creepiness that comes along with playing something like this alone at 2 AM. I'll check out the IGN review in a bit, but any word on the spook-factor? What about puzzles, are they average RE puzzles or will they be a bit more difficult this time around? I'm a big fan of Silent Hill for the fact you can choose your puzzle difficulty. Looks like an awesome game, and I've heard a lot about the amount of open-solutions you have to escape any given situation. |
I'm buying it. Fucking 9.8! Jesus. That's Buy-the-System-for-it material. Let's see what EGM gives it!
-Lasereth |
9.8! That is fucking incredible, I think Metroid Prime is the only other game to get that score.
I've been hyped for this for a while, ever since seeing the trailer from e3 several years ago when we knew it still involved zombies. After playing the demo, I can't wait to purchase the full product, it's more than likely going to be the best of the series, possibly the best horror game ever. EDIT: Also, Gamespy gave it a 5/5 and GMR gave it a 10/10.....I got the latest EGM issue yesterday and they said that they couldn't review it yet as they received it a bit late, but one of the guys stated "if you don't already own a GamcCube, buy one for this game!"..... |
GMR gave it a 10/10 ? awesome. That was GMR's final issue too...
|
Finally a set 3rd person view..I might play this one:)

C'mon, was anyone following this game expecting anything less? It's got 'masterpiece' written all over it. Pure class in a miniature DVD. Pity I have to wait for it =(

We got a copy of this a couple of days ago and fuck me dead, it is that fucking good. Unfortunately we have to give it back so I'm putting an order through at dvdboxoffice.com right now.
If you ever needed a reason to buy a Cube then this is fucking it. |
So is it actually scary?
|
Depends. I've always found the RE games had more of an 'oh shit I've got two bullets left and there's two zombies in that room fuckfuckfuckfuck I'm gonna die and it's gonna be scary oh shit there's one tapping outside that window is it gonna bust in? holy shit I ain't running down there' etc etc.
More or less. Heh =) There was actually one room in REmake where you can see the shadow of a zombie outside a window projected onto a wall. I wouldn't run down that hallway. Playing these games in the dark, alone, is where it's at. And it'll scare you. |
Hopefully this will make it to the PC at some point because I'm not going to buy a GC just for the one game....tempting as it is.

The atmosphere in this RE is unlike any other, it feels more evil as it's namesake and definately a whole lot more darker. Also, there's hardly a place where you feel entirely safe, there's always a creeping fear that a Villager is at the door trying to claw it's way in, or that someone's going to throw a molotov through the window. The Villager's may not be Zombies but they're close enough to provide that classic RE feel. |
That game makes me want to buy a GC soooooooooo bad. Too bad I don't have any money.
Argh.. I want that game so fucking bad. |
For all of you non GC owners, it is coming out on the PS2 at years end...it wont be the same, but still......
|
I cannot want to have time to buy and play this game. That review was excellent, it looks great, and it sounds scary and a lot of fun!
|
Gamespot gave it a 9.6

The IGN reviewer said he would have given RE4 game of the year 2004 if it had came out last year. That's right, Game of the Year over Halo 2, Half-Life 2, San Andreas, etc. It's that damn good. I can't wait to get it.
-Lasereth |
Is it compatible with my Donkey Konga Bongos?

why did this come out solely on the GC & PS2...the weakest of the systems gets one of the better looking games out right now. makes no $en$e

I think it's because, more or less, they don't like Microsoft. And it just goes to show our little cube can match the big box with graphics if they try *grin*
The quality bar has been set for 2005. It's gonna be a good year. |
I saw weak and GameCube in the same sentence, thus I laughed quite heartily.
Personally I think the Cube is capable of almost anything the Xbox can do graphically, and a lot of the time (Resident Evil, Metroid, RE4) it actually looks a whole lot better. I guess it really boils down to thr quality of your dev team's technical engineers. No bias here, love all my consoles. RE4 in a week!!! (I live in NZ, getting it imported). |
HOLY THIRD PERSON VIEW BATMAN!
FINALLY! I hated the security cam kinda view of all the other RE games! ARGH! |
Confound you Deflok, I'm having to wait until March. *sadness*
|
I'm getting this bad boy directly after work today...envy me Hulk ;)

Just got back from picking this up and this game is definately worth the hype. The controls are essentially the same, where you have to stop, aim, and shoot, but the new camera angle helps relieve the problem of not seeing whats ahead of you. The Letterbox format is cool too because it helps give it a nice cinematic feel.

The game is awesome. I'm only up to chapter 3. This is the first game I've died so many time. Does anyone feel that the camera is too zoom in?
|
The Camera needs zoomed out a bit, and there needs to be crosshairs instead of the laser beam, then I'd give it a perfect score. It's spooky and it's also tense with 20 guys running at you with only 6 bullets left.
|
i pre-ordered this from the capcom site a while ago, and i should be getting it in the mail soon. i'm really excited! i'm glad to hear that even though this is #4 already, it doesn't seem to be getting old or slowing down.

Simply put, this game rocks. I'm having so much fun and I don't regret buying a game cube now!
|
Saw the videos on IGN, looks like genuine fun and stress..
Do those villagers never die no matter how much lead you put in them? |
Villagers are a fickle lot. Some will gladly detonate their heads after you put one puny 9MM bullet in them from 100 feet, others will eat a full clip of TMP ammo and want some more.
|
So what's the story? Anyone wanna make me want this game and explain the plot a little..BTW, I'm new the the whole RE series (yeah, seriously).
Why are these people like that? Or is that too much of a spoiler?.. |
Arright, bear with me. There was this company, Umbrella. They messed with genetics and stuff, creating a nasty piece of work, the T Virus, in their quest to make the ultimate killing machine, the Tyrant. However, it turned people into zombies. Raccoon City was where the outbreak happened, and it all turned to shit so the US Government nuked the place. Umbrella was broken up and nuetered. The End.
RE4 follows a tangent from the previous titles, featuring a couple of old characters in a new setting. Leon, being a kickarse special forces guy, is sent to save the President's daughter, who's been taken to somewhere in Europe. As for the villiagers, it's not the T-Virus that makes them want to eat your delicious braiiinnnnsss... ;) |
Why does Leon remind me of Raiden from the MGS series?
|
Hahaha, I dunno, but I thought the same thing when I started playing it last night. And yeah, its an amazing game, by the way.
|
Gameplay not too repetitive? Both videos i saw were Leon shooting at villagers all the time, hiding in houses until they busted in?
Are there any scary scary moments, with tension building up until dun dun dun the huge monster comes out of that black hole in the corner with a chainsaw? |
Ugh.. this is the sole reason Ive ever wanted a gamecube. I hear people talking about how its going to get ported to ps2 but even when it does, its not even going to be a 1/4th as good as the gc version.. damn... if only gc had a stronger lineup right off the bat I would have bought it - the games seem to be getting better and better.
|
Why will the ps2 version be not as good as the Game^3 version?
|
Quote:
With that said, the PS2 version will no doubtly still hold its ground, and will have a few extra feature or something to encourage your purchase (like Viewtiful Joe got when it was ported to PS2) |
Ruse, get one now =) Fifty bucks US, if you get one second-hand, even in good condition.
As for the PS2 port, with a game this pumped to the 'Cubes specifics, it's going to require a nigh-complete rewrite of the game's code. Plus it's coming a year later, and even with Capcom's attempt to undermine Cube sales, it won't have much of an effect. |
I bought this game when it came out, but I haven't had a chance to play it until tonight. The only way to describe this game is: Holy shit! It is absolutely incredible, graphically, gameplay, control (although takes getting use to) and I'm only 1 hour in and loving the plot. I reccommend it to anyone who owns a gamecube.....and for those that don't, buy one. You can get it used for 70 bucks.
|
It's a different sort of scariness than you may have experienced in previous RE games, biznatch. They don't rely so much on the dogs jumping through windows and the lickers falling off the roof. As it's been said, the fear is more that you will be unprepared for the coming challenges. The game is very devious with its placing of the difficult fights within the usual chain of fights with one or two weak enemies, so you've always got to have enough health and ammo to carry yourself through a boss to be comfortable.
Insta-fail and even insta-death are not entirely uncommon either, even on normal mode. If the chainsaw zombie gets to you, there isn't any fooling around with the life meter...it lops your head off and you're done. I don't think the game is as scary as its predecessors but it's definately more exciting. |
I'm 10 hours in and I am still loving it.
10/10 |

Haha caught me... I folded and bought the cube today along with RE4  Every word that Ive read is true. Its AMAZING! ( difficult at first, as this is my first time on gc, but amazing none the less.) |
Good to hear ;) Once you finish it, you can work your way through both Metroid Primes, Tales of Symphonia, Zelda: TWW, Smash Bros, Resident Evil Remake and Zero, F-Zero....
The list goes on ;) |
Yea, those games sound great - Ive had my eye on Metroid Prime for a while now and when the new zelda comes out.... ohh shit.
But until then, I might have to pick up a copy of paper mario, my girl is a big oldschool mario fan :) |
best game ever. Blows half-life 2 way out of the water. It seriously has the best graphics that I can remember of any game ever. Its fun as hell too. My roommate and like 5 of my friends come over to my house bugging me if they could watch me play the game and I only started it yesterday.
The chainsaw guy cutting your head off is awesomely graphic too. I am currently stuck on Spoiler: El Gigante I cannot say enough great things about this game. 10/10 *edit* naw fuck it....11/10 |
Wow, so few negative comments too. I'm gonna have to try to borrow a GameCube.

I'm pretty far into the game now and I'm still impressed. The Difficulty of the game is set perfectly. Crosshairs would make it a little easier but that really doesnt matter when the shotgun is your weapon of choice. Save your pistol for the last mob standing :)
YaWhateva to get passed that...Spoiler: shoot him until he bends over and the virus comes out of his back, run behind him and it'll let you climb up his back and rapidly tap the button to slice him up. You only need to do it twice. |
thanks cybermike, but I already got passed that by Spoiler: shooting him till he bent over then laying into the virus with my guns from behind him. It took a lot longer that way though
|
I just wish someone would show Capcom the wonders of a strafe button. I hate having to rotate around corners all the time.

I dont think Ive ever enjoyed a game this much. Its always constantly moving.
Spoiler: Im at the part where the cultists corner you and ashley into the house and have that huge firefight.. I wish I hadnt sold the punisher for health spray - I can see where it would be extremely useful on the staircase |

Can someone help me out here? This better not be a glitch :|
Spoiler: I've already got Ashley and I am at the farm. You know when you first enter the farm and you tell her to hide in the dumpster? Well, I told her to hide, I killed all the enemies, and now when I go back to get her, I can't open the dumpster or anything. The action button doesn't even show up. Any clues? |
I'm looking at getting this game, but like all Survival Horror games, I get too scared to actually play the game. I've left a trail of uncompleted games in my wake that for the sole reason that they scare me. RE 0, RE 1, Silent Hill 2... The only one I think I finished was Eternal Darkness and that's only because I didn't feel completely helpless with a sword in my hand.
So, if I pick up RE4, is it going to scare me in the vein of the previous games, or scare me in some other completely new way? |
Rdr4evr, Spoiler: just hit the X button and you will whistle to her and she will come out.
|
lol, why I didn't think of that is beyond me....heh, thanks.
|
bah. i'm attending some military training right now and don't have my gamecube with me (the DS is keeping me company). you guys are making me pretty friggin envious... i'll pick up this game as my gamecube is ready to resume its regular duties.
