WarDevil Shows Potential of Xbox 2
First trailer and details on the next-gen title slated for a 2005 release.
By Hilary Goldstein

December 2, 2004 - The Internet is like dry brush and it doesn't take much to set it ablaze. Such is the case with WarDevil - Unleash the Beast Within, a next-generation title from UK-based Digi-Guys. The official website does not specifically state this title is for Xbox 2, however, several key pieces of information make it an almost sure thing.

WarDevil is described as a "an innovative next generation 3D title" and is set for release in late 2005. With Nintendo's Revolution and Sony's PS3 set to ship in 2006, the only other choice is for Xbox 2. Long-rumored to release in holiday 2005, it would seem gamers will have a new console to consider next year. Consider this a first look at what is apparently a launch title for Microsoft's next system.

WarDevil is promised to go beyond the conventions of a normal video game. Players assume the role of the mysterious WarDevil, navigating what appears to be a post-apocalyptic world, ruled by the Chun Federation. Little else has been revealed about the title, but the teaser-trailer certainly makes this look like an action game and either a first or third-person shooter.

Though the trailer appears to be CG cut-scenes, Digi-Guys seems to suggest that the in-game visuals won't differ much. If this is true, WarDevil would rival today's current PC graphics, truly putting Xbox 2 on the console cutting edge. The cinematic experience of WarDevil is intentional, as the title will also become a CGI high-definition short film.

Digi-Guy's extensive website reveals four of WarDevil's environments:

Wasteland: "This level features open air gameplay and focuses on creating a very strong mood/lighting style."

Hangar: "A very evocative and dark interior level -- deep within the enemy base."

Shaft: "A seemingly endless military supply shaft."

Monastery: "The FreeState desert stronghold -- based around an ancient Monastery."

Call me skeptical, but I don't think Microsoft would want its game developers being the first to announce when the xbox 2 is coming out. They could just be finding new ways to push the limits of the xbox or someone's just trying to get you excited about things that may or may not have any basis. Don't hold your breath until MS opens its dirty, money-filled mouth.

well screens for the next Morrowind for Xbox II have already been released. So who knows?

I have 2 buddies that work for MS, one for Xbox, one for bungie. The latest scoop I heard (last week) was that MS didn't have ANY working prototypes of Xbox2, just G5'w with custom graphics cards to simulate the new Xbox2.

There have been a NUMBER of developers working on games for Xbox2. MS is pinning their future in the console market on being first to market with the next gen console, as well as having a HUGE library of games to go with it. Xbox2 won't be backwards compatible, so they will need the library to entice people to buy.

Rough estimate is Late Fall 05, but again as of right now there are NO working Xbox2 units. Bungie dev's have the G5's to familiarize themselves with the code right now, but no boxes. OH yeah, the controllers will be wireless also, no cords this time.

Even if there were functioning Xbox2 consoles out there, I wouldn't believe that's in game footage. Those are cutscenes through and through. The graphics alone are enough to rule out in game, but more than that, the construction of them is not like gameplay. Those are directed scenes, not clips of some guy playing.

I declare shenanigans. It's FMV for a game that is being developed with the Xbox2 in mind. That's all.

Yes, I see a huge mistake in Microsoft's future. Backwards compatibility is a big selling point, and it seems like it'd be worth it (if they're planning to use a DVD drive again) to put in the capability to read old disks. I bought a PS2 instead of an Xbox largely due to the fact that I could play all the quality old PS games when the urge struck in addition to the new stuff. Interesting indeed. Guess we'll have to see what happens.

Whenever anyone has claimed that gameplay is as good as the cutscenes, I've been disappointed. Those are cinematics, not gameplay.

Is Xbox 2 going to have the same desktop supercomputer statistics that were allegedly projected for the PS3?

hulk 12-15-2004 11:27 PM

Seeing as it's much the same trying to run PC games on a Mac than X-Box games on an X-Box 2, there's plenty of reason not to do it.

This next race is gonna be a lot tighter, methinks.

theburner 12-16-2004 06:42 AM

Hulk, I agree. The next gen console race will be INSANE. Word is MS dropped support for internal HDD also, because not many people used it. Best example I can give you is Halo 2. Ever see any long load times? Nope.. Somehow they used the HDD to eliminate the long load times (ie. Kotor 1 load times.. HATED). My bungie buddy says it is crappy nobody used it before them, because it can be a huge benefit to the game. Imagine Kotor 1 without load times at all.

I read somewhere that the reason Xbox 2 isn't going backwards compatible is because they are using a new graphics chipset for the next box, and it would be too expensive/ impossible to build in support for both chipsets.

Halo 3 will NOT be available at release for Xbox2 which is a huge mistake for MS. However, you wonder why Halo2 seems like it was rushed/ not completed? (confirmed btw by a buddy at Bungie)... If it had of drawn out any longer, it would have killed sales for Xbox2. If MS is on track for fall 05, and Halo 2 came out spring 05, it would KILL the sale of Xbox 2.

hulk 12-16-2004 08:15 AM

Heh, you almost got it =)

The HD elimenation is pretty much to stop all the hacking and piracy that's rampant with the X-Box now.

The lack of backwards compatiblity is due to the CISC-based Pentium being replaced by a RISC-based PPC.

As for Halo 3, it's a pity greatness is being rushed like that. I just hope Nintendo take their time with Zelda. Which I have no doubt they will.

Don't forget the rumors that MS is planning on releasing three verisons of the Xbox 2. One without the harddrive, one with and that's basicly an entry level PC that has a wireless keyboard, mouse, and controller, CD burner, and run Windows.

Of as everyone knows, "Microsoft doesn’t comment on rumors.”

As for backwards compatiblity and MS changing the processor on their next console... A company by the name of Transitive Corp. has unveiled system called QuickTransit. In a nutshell they're saying their system would allow any one platform to emulate and play software of another (think Xbox and Xbox 2). Supposedly "QuickTransit allows translated applications to run faster on new hardware than it did on the original platform, thanks to the speed of today's machines compared with those made a decade ago."

So far neither Transitive Corp. nor MS are saying that they have any sort of agreement with each other. However I thought I'd throw this in here as just something else to think about. :)

Those aren't in-game graphics. The only thing that matters is in-game graphics when you're wow'ing people about what next-gen systems can do. Current gen-systems can make CGI scenes that well...where's the in-game footage?
