Anyone pick up MGS3?

I'm surprised to not see a "how bad ass ISSS Metal Gear Solid Snake Eater" thread...I havn't picked it up yet because i have too many games on my plate, but i want to hear impressions. The trailers are breathtaking and the gameplay looks amazing. So please do obliege

That's good, because I didn't really like MGS2 that much. It for sure wasn't as good as the first!

I heard that 3 actually takes some time to beat, like 20+ hours.

no one's saying anything because it's not released yet I'm getting mine tomorrow (have it reserved at Gamestop in the mall). I'm going to play a lot of it over Thanksgiving break. For now, I need to finish up Halo 2 and San Andreas.

yeah i'm trying to focus on Half-Life 2...i have a short attention span but it's doing a good job ...I though MGS3 was released the 16...thats what it says on the official website...and tuesday is usually a national new release day

The release date I got was Nov. 19. Maybe they didn't want to compete directly with the HL2 release on Tuesday. But your right, most games around here are released on a Tuesday.

The game is fucking awesome so far. I love it. I'm a huge fan of Metal Gear Solid, so anything that has to do with "good game" and "MGS" is an automatic plus for me. It's similar to the usual MGS model so far (codec conversations, cut scenes, and gameplay mixed) and that makes it awesome. I'm about 3 hours into it. This is going to be a long game.

I'm feeling up to a short review now.

Graphics: The best of the series, arguably best on Playstation 2 at the moment. The cut scenes are damn-near movie-like, and the environments are life-like and real. Spoiler: 50% of the game takes place INSIDE. Hideo pulled a fast one on us again. Yes, the game is about jungle warfare, but you play inside buildings a large portion of the game.

Gameplay: Fucking awesome. Combines the elements of all the MGS games into one sweet package. Your radar is gone, but you have two or three items that substitute as a radar. For instance, the Sonar item gives you a map ala MGS and MGS 2, but you have to "ping" it to make the enemies show up. You click the L3 stick on the PS2 controller, and it makes a "ping" sound (similar to a submarine) and it shows up on the map where bodies are. Just all kinds of stuff like this make the game awesome. You truly are Charlie in the Bush in this one. You can change your camoflauge and facepaint to blend in with your environments. The Boss Battles are very nice. One of them is border-line EPIC. Took me 50 minutes to do it......

Plot/Characters: The plot is very good also. It's not nearly as complicated as MGS2 but it does have the classic "MGS" feel to it (psycho-fuck characters, huge plot twists, torture, etc.). The three best characters are The Boss, Snake, and Revolver Ocelot. Ocelot truly shines in this game. He moves from being absurdly cocky to having respect for the battlefield. You also find out why he uses (or who told him to use) a Single Action Army in the later games. I can't stress how badass the plot is overall, it has unity and closure at the end as well.

Spoiler: No, you don't play as Solid Snake, no, it's not a time paradox, no it's not Virtual Reality or a simulation (a la MGS2). I'm glad they chose not to do this. It gives you more respect for Solid Snake by learning about who his father was. You play as Big Boss (who doesn't get his title 'til the last 10 minutes of the game) the entire time, no different characters. It really is Big Boss and you really don't play as Solid Snake.



Overall, I'd say this one is tied with MGS for best of the series. Perhaps better than Metal Gear Solid........

Would you say it's awesome but short/easy. How does it compare to MGS2 in terms of length?

There are several games battling for my cash this month, MGS3 has just dropped way down my list. I'll probably wait 'til it's in the bargain bin.

I watched Redjake play MGS3, and trust me, it's the longest of the series. Most reviewers are saying it's 20-25 hours long the first time through but he beat it in about 17 hours. 17 hours!!! The first MGS took about 6-10 hours the first time through and MGS2 wasn't much different. He did beat it in 2 days, but he didn't stop playing it either. It's worth the money. It's certainly not "easy" either!

What's the story like? MGS2 was just stupid at the end. It started off ok though.

And you say 6-10 hours.. with or without the cutscenes?

6-10 hours for the first MGS reading every single line of dialogue and not skipping past any cutscenes or conversations. The same applies for MGS3! There's no reason to play the MGS games at all if you skip the dialogue and cutscenes.

The cutscenes and dialogue are what give MGS the edge over most sneaking games...That and snakes flowing mullet I'm trying to hold off til christmas, so it doesn't ruin my grades Can't wait though...
