half-life from steam

Does anybody know if you get a CD-Key from when you buy it through steam? Say i want to install using somebody else's DVD but use the cd-key i bought from steam, is this possible?

aKula 11-05-2004 05:05 AM

If you buy HL through steam you get an account with a username and password. Any games bought on that account are associated with that account.

Destrox 11-05-2004 11:24 AM

There are no CDkeys anymore.

You are authorized as the previous poster mentioned, a user name and password.

That username is connected to a steam-ID #, which can be retreived if lost by the email you had used to register it.

My personal opinion about steam is that it is one of the best things to have ever come to the gaming industry.

Best patching system ever.

I can't decide if I want a dvd or to download from steam.

meepa 11-05-2004 09:43 PM

You could always download from Steam and then look up the various "how to back up your files" guides and make your own DVD! Best of both worlds. Or worst of both...

Krycheck 11-05-2004 10:05 PM

Can someone link to one of those back up how-to's?

I love Steam. I really don't understand the hate over it. It is indeed the best patching system ever. But I am afraid of having to reinstall if I have to re-format for some reason.

Do you have to launch HL through steam everytime you want to play it?

I think this is it - the backup idea. People don't want to be screwed if their drive fails or they get a new computer. It would suck to download it all again.

Destrox 11-06-2004 07:20 AM

The only people who worry about downloading again is those on 56k, otherwise it wont take more then 1 night to get it all.

To backup your steam games, account, etc...

Question: I know when you buy Half-Life 2 through Steam you get CS: Source, so is CS: Source going to be bundled with HL2 in the stores, sold seperate, available for download?

Pfhorte 11-06-2004 02:40 PM

Ordered from steam

What I would have liked to see was for the steam orders to be playable when the game went gold instead of having to wait for its relase in stores.

CS:Source is a free mutliplayer "mod" that comes with any order of HL2 being bronze, silver, plat, normal, or collectors edition.

Rumor has it that it will be sold sepretly in the future, as in not any time soon. (They gotta make money off the HL2 orders first.)

Valve cannot do this unless they wish to be sued by V.U. for breech of contract.

It is released (unlocked) on Nov 16th 12AM PST (GMT-0900), adjust the time according to yours.

Figured this is worthy of a new post:

Built in Backup Utility for Steam.

Open any Explorer, or Internet browser and type the following:
steam://backup/

It then lauches it and does the rest for you. :)

Pretty slick! I had read somewhere on the Valve Forums that they were going to implament that but I never went back to find that little jewel of info. Worked pretty well.

Thanks Destrox!

i hated steam to begin with , but know it works great, nothing else comes close to its ease of use.
