Anyone else ever play Syndicate?

Excellent game by Bullfrog. I think its the first strategy type squad based game I ever played, very deep storyline as well as new ideas for character control, ie. modifying the amounts of chemicals in their brain and letting them handle themselves, or individually controlling them. I haven't seen a game like it since.

jakewesier 10-22-2004 05:59 AM

Yeah that was a great game. I worked hard at that one for a while. Then I found the cheat code and I took the best weapons out on the 1st mission for a laugh and blew up half the buildings with 1 shot lol!

Yeah but it was a fun game, it looked good for when it was made, interesting plot and fun game play. Reminded me of Xcom

Now that was a cool game, if I could find a copy now, I think it would still be pretty playable. Rather than Xcom, it reminded me a little of a game called Cannon Fodder (the left-click=walk-to, right-click=fire at controls do anyway) which if I remember correctly was made by a couple of guys who's software company was Sensible Software? Anyway, Syndicate - definate thumbs up!!

mercury-hg 10-22-2004 07:41 AM

wow, xcom and syndicate... wow

think i might have to check abondonware for them

Schwan 10-22-2004 10:39 AM

Funny thing - I never really caught on. For some strange reason I just didn't enjoy it as much as my friends at the time - mind you, it was a long time ago. I dunno, maybe it was the real-time factor, not so common in these days. Did I mention I feel old?

Syndicate was an outstanding game, I even clocked it once.

Syndicate Wars on the other hand was kinda crap.

Get it here:

Man, that brings back memories!
Syndicate was lot's of fun.

The graphics were extremely good at the time, and I still remember exactly how the "selected" sound went :)

Man I remember that game. I was just 10 when I was playing it when it came out on my friend's brothers' sick PowerMac.

Myst was released the same year. (1993)

hirosada 10-22-2004 04:36 PM

Oh wow, time to bust out the old p3 650 notebook for that gem. I hated how the Gaus Gun was the end all weapon, but everything else about the game was golden. I can't believe how old that game is.. so yeah I feel old.. *sigh* but I'll be 25 which means less money wasted on insurance. :)

Jesus Pimp 10-22-2004 05:36 PM

I consider the original Syndicate one of the best games ever made.

Irishsean 10-22-2004 05:51 PM

How come games like this aren't made anymore? I haven't seen squad based tactics games since this or Xcom...

heyal256 10-22-2004 05:52 PM

Wow.... Syndicate. I loved that game along with the other Bullfrog games from that time period, Themepark and Populous....

Talk about bringing up old memories.

I still want a sequel to syndicate to be made dammit. (syndicate wars was basically the same thing so it doesn't count)

yodatreat 10-22-2004 06:01 PM

Wow, thanks for the link. I actually have some sort of old SB16 bundle CD floating around with Syndicate, Ultima 8, Strike Commander and something else floating around the house, but the download will be much handier. When I wasn't playing DooM it was Syndicate or Mechwarrior 2 on the old 486/33. Good times.

I don't know of any recent, good realtime squad-based tactical games like Syndicate. For turn-based games, though, check out Jagged Alliance 2 (older, but just got reissued in a mega gold edition), and Silent Storm. It's not the most common genre, but good games are still out there if you know where to look.

Could you use DOSBox? God, I loved Syndicate. I would love to see it redone in the way SC2 has been.

Irishsean 10-24-2004 07:13 AM

The Jagged alliance games were good, but didn't keep my attention the way syndicate did. It was the first game I ever got really drawn into so far I would lose track of time. More than once I would get interrupted by my mom calling me for school after I played all night without realizing it.

djflish 10-24-2004 01:58 PM

I'm still playing it now!
I downloaded an Amiga emulator for old times sake, and this is one of my all time fave games. A timeless classic

Strelich 10-24-2004 09:51 PM

Genuine, patented classic. I still have memories from the last time I played it through. I didn't get through American Revolt, not past the first three levels or so. As difficulty goes, the fact that in the very first level if you don't hump it to safe ground an air strike kills you in the first ten seconds sums how much they kicked it up in the add-on.

Oh, but I always enjoyed *persuading* people to take up arms, that's for sure.

superiorrain 10-25-2004 07:34 AM

Syndicate, the beauty that was that game, a true masterpiece.

Another excellent game was frontier elite 2, though i can't get it to work on XP, this saddens me. If any one knows then please share this information so i can enjoy it once again.

nukeu666 10-25-2004 09:35 AM

i really liked the game but never could figure out what to do in it :p

for playing it in win2k....use VDMsound and/or DOSbox

Kadath 10-25-2004 02:44 PM

nukeu666 -- I know how to use DOSBox, but I pulled down VDMSound and I'm not sure how to use both at the same time. I can't run DosBox with VDMSound, and running the Syndicate main.exe doesn't work, as I expected.
