Fable, like or not???!!!

I borrowed Fable from a friend out of town this weekend and played only for a couple of hours. I must say that this game has the potential to be great. In 2 hours I did not get to look around much as you spend a lot of that time training but I will say 2 of my complaints are one the game is a bit more cartoonish looking than I thought it would be but that could be because I don't have an HD tv of HD for the XBox, my big complaint would be that you have to complete a quest before you can save. That is rather annoying.

Let me know what ya'll think?

Matt

to give some quick impressions: i spent a good 15-20 hours with the game and i'm just about finished. I wish the game was longer, and that combat was more varied and actually took some skill, but overall I've really enjoyed the game. Hopefully they'll release a sequel or an add-on disk or even downloabable content.

macsmith230 10-18-2004 10:31 PM

I'm kind of iffy on it so far. I really enjoyed it the first week or so (I'm a slow game-player, btw), but the controls and camera kind of bug me when you're running around. Haven't heard too many other complain about this though, so maybe it's just me. I'm also not a fan of the save system...sometimes it's a pain not being able to save after you've spent a lot of time on a hard area and have to run off for something.
My only other complaint is that it hasn't turned out to be nearly as open-ended as I'd imagined. I guess I didn't really expect it to be, but the pre-release hype was so big, and Molyneux seems like such a dreamer, it's hard not to be disappointed when he can't translate his ideas directly to the game.
Would I recommend it though? Definitely.

Viros 10-19-2004 01:45 AM

The only thing I have against Fable is the length. If it were a good 80+ hour game I think it could be one of the best rpg's ever.

bookerV 10-19-2004 05:39 AM

My only complaint would be the length as well, mostly because with the shortness of the game there isn't really time to develop that big epic storyline. It feels kind of rushed. More like a short story than a novel. Which is too bad, because it really does have fantastic potential. Very fun game though. Stunning music and excellent visuals...

crossova 10-19-2004 12:09 PM

i think we can all agree that the game's length was its main flaw. i did like the various magic abilities and if they ever opened this game up to be like Phantasy Star Online....wow

Esoteric 10-19-2004 12:13 PM

The length of the game is the only thing I don't like, but it has replay value so it's not that big of a deal. It would be cool if they added quests and more things through Xbox Live.

xxjiggyjesterxx 10-20-2004 02:41 PM

What replay value, there are basically two ways to go through the game, then its back to the store with it. I finished it the first day I bought it, beat a second time the following day, and I must say... for Something with so much hype, it wasn't that great. It took four years worth of programming and design, with all due respect, WTF how could it be so short, and the graphics do infact get choppy at times. overall good concept but poor execution

Carno 10-20-2004 04:50 PM

I liked the game, but it was a disppointment for me. The world wasn't open very much at all, and it was really short. Other than that it was fun.

I do regret spending $50 on it though.

mkultra 10-21-2004 12:44 PM

Going in without having really payed attention to the hype (only played it because a roomate bought it) I think its an ok console rpg. Better than most, but not the second coming or something. There are a lot of nice extras like aging, scars, getting a wench, etc. but that alone doesn't make good gameplay. The plots and quests are ok, but the thing does play somewhat like a rail shooter in terms of not being able to wander around outside the paths. Of course, my favorite RPGs are the Fallout series, where you can wander anywhere when ever you want so it might not bug other people as much.

humpy012 10-22-2004 11:52 AM

Fable seemed a lot shorter than I expected it to be. I think it beat it in 12 hours or so. My roommate is currently playing it so I havent been able to go back and be evil.

ironchefkorea 10-22-2004 01:44 PM

I was expecting the final battle to be the beginning of a larger, more significant main quest - like leaving Midgar for the first time in FFVII.

And then the game ended.

mandal 10-22-2004 10:32 PM

I've just started playing a few days ago and I have to say I like the game. I don't get the complaint about the save thing, you can save by pushing start. Anyways, i've played about two hours and I've just completed the second quest. Right now I'm doing a little fishing. i have a feeling this is going to take a while.

Mephex 10-22-2004 10:34 PM

Was a good game, finished it in roughly 8 hours, just didn't live up to the hype. That's my main complaint, though I should've known better anyway, I suppose.

Anyways, I have loved my time with Fable, I kinda slowed down how much i play, and have been taking time with it, so i dont rush through it too fast, most people say you can beet it in one day. :) Anyways, great game, and maybe a little to hyped, but worth renting, and maybe worth buying.

pottsynz 10-23-2004 04:04 AM

Bah, a short RPG is like an FPS with 3 guns. :)
The long unravelling storylines are what ake RPGs what they are, maybe I'll just hire this one.

Derwood 10-23-2004 03:32 PM

I'm 13 or 14 hours in and haven't finished it yet. Mostly because I'm doing every silver and bronze quest available, plus playing all the pub games, getting married, etc. Really doing everything at a leisurely pace and not racing to the end.

I'm a pure good warrior, and I know I'll replay it as a pure evil wizard. That's about 30-35 hours of gameplay. Not bad.

gorilla 10-24-2004 05:55 PM

I dont like it when people complain that they beat it in one day. Sure, I could do that to if I wanted to. But that is a waste of the game, I went through and did every quest I could, opened all the silver key chests, opened all the Demon Doors, bought the very best clothing (Bright Platemail) and did alittle real estate trading, fine jewel trading, etc. Ive donate over 200,000 gold to Avo and more then a dozen souls to Skorm. I maxed myself out in all the strength skill and will power. Im maxed out in 7 different spells. Ive got all the cool tattoos and experimented with different hair. It took me over 20 hours to beat it, and now Im still walking around making money and killin stuff with the sword of Aeons. I cant stand it when people say "it took me 5 hours to beat this game, it was too short." if you go through and do only main quests, you miss the whole game. I love Fable and will probably play through it 4 or 5 times before i get bored.

crossova 10-25-2004 09:26 AM

i just sold mine on ebay for 28 bucks (minus the 3.85 for shipping).

Another gripe i had about the game was how fast i aged. i was 63 yrs old but with a body like the Hulk....and taking on legions of enemies...come on

mreman4u 10-28-2004 09:32 AM

I just finished the game. Rented it from Blockbuster.

Complaints:
too short
not enough items: there are only a few basic weapons that get stronger the more you pay. I like lots of different weapons that have different strengths and usus.

Strengths:
I loved the gate travel. saved time walking everywhere.
Graphics were awesome. I have HD TV
Music was awesome. Reminded me of Halo.

Anyway, I strongly recommend you rent this one before you buy.

junglistic 10-28-2004 11:29 AM

ive finished the game twice, first time was in 7.5hrs, and 2nd i really did take my time, doing all of the side quest stuff (wife, silver keys, etc etc etc) and it was only 15hr. I really agree that if there were a 50+ hr game, it could very well be the best RPG around.

Another flaw Ive found is the variety in weapons and armour. I wish it was a lil more diablo 2 like that respect. But over all, a great game, very innovative. I would give it a 8.5/10.

Now back to san andreas :)

joeyaz 10-28-2004 05:13 PM

I enjoyed the game it took me about 18 hours to finish I didn't push it, just took my time. I didn't believe in the expectations of the game so I figured that helped me enjoy more of the game instead of thinking that what I was missing. I'm going to have to get myself a HDTV, I want to see the difference between that and my aging box.

minoli 10-28-2004 05:33 PM

played it and i was realy into it. then i steped away for about a week and i lost interest.

Bionic Monkey 10-28-2004 08:30 PM

Chalk me up as another one who enjoyed the game. It definately had its flaws, but I'm not sorry I made this a purchase, rather than a rental.

My only real complaint (rather than a nitpick) is the aging system. If they couldn't implement it for every character in the game (or at least the main ones), they shouldn't have implemented it at all. It was very disconcerting, and pulled me right out of the game whenever I'd interact with a character I'd first met in childhood or early adulthood, and they look exactly the same while I'm a horribly scarred 63-year-old.

FngKestrel 10-29-2004 12:12 AM

I played and enjoyed it thoroughly. Went through the first time as an upstanding citizen. Trying to play through a second time and see how far I can travel without having to complete missions. I've got the mana regen legendary weapon, and mana shield and now run rampant through towns. Having trouble getting money though and I refuse to use the Hero Save/Arena exploit.

robbdn 10-29-2004 03:01 AM

Fable... blah... I don't understand why people like this game. Not open-ended at all, sure you can be good or evil, but does the game change at all? No, only in minor cosmetic ways. Look at KOTOR for an example of how to do a good/evil track well.

Depth of narrative? Again, look at KOTOR. I beat fable with a good character, and couldn't stand to suffer through the boring game again with an evil character, so I went in and traded it for Paper Mario 2. Already having more fun with Paper Mario 2 than I did with Fable.

So what could have made Fable work? It's true that Fable is an incredible experiment in character creation. Now if only that character creation could be applied to a branching storyline it would really work well. How about a true good/evil system, where you actually get to make important choices BEFORE the credits roll? How about INTERESTING side quests and NPC characters with stories and backgrounds? How about a combat system that requires even minor amounts of skill?

Basically, somebody should go about combining Ninja Gaiden, KOTOR, and Fable to get the game the pre-Fable hype promised.

tooblekane 10-29-2004 11:52 AM

i enjoyed the game. i didn't feel it lived up to all of the hype, though. the go anywhere, do anything thing turned out to be a lot more limited than expected. i was a bit bothered by the fact that the main difference between being good and evil is a couple hundred dollars savings in shops and a few quests. that doesn't make it a bad game, or even really a let-down .. it was just different than what i was told over and over to expect.

kutulu 10-29-2004 12:57 PM

If you want open-ended and long gameplay look no further than Morrowind. Be careful what you wish for though. I finished about 1/3 of the main quest and instead maxed out every skill, spell, got every cool piece of armor/weapon imaginable before I got tired of it.

tooblekane 10-30-2004 01:51 PM

i got pretty bored with morrowind pretty quick, but i've been thinking about borrowing my friends copy with the expansions for shits and giggles

Yeah exactly. I"m about 8 hours in, but I've spent tons of time simply stealing items.. and then when that stopped working, waiting for nightfall then opening locks, THEN stealing items. :) I've also spent quite a lot of time simply fishing. :)

Look at Spiderman2 for instant.. the main storyline is but a mere 40% of the game.. which is a lot like Fable, sure you can "beat" the game.. but is it truely beaten if you haven't done everything and attained everything?

Heck this run I'm not even TOUCHING magic which puts a nice twist to it (sure so I decided to get the multi-arrow skill, but thats only because I have good dex from all my thievery attempts :D). I went into the game with one intent.. max Guile as quickly as possible.. ignoring other skills it took me a bit but I got it and theivery is 'tons o fun'. :) I'm going to replay the game as a pure magic user (I'll still put points elsewhere, but all my attacks will be magic). I find that it'll be a lot of fun.

There are people that say Diablo2 is too easy and short, but then again they're playing with the gimp classes. I call them gimp classes because they're extremely power and easy to handle (which partly is why they're powerful). If you want to get the fullest out of the game, you gotta go in and do it at least one time with a major drawback. Like.. never use the melee in fable and only the bow.. that gets difficult in some areas.. or like I'll do next game and do only magic. Making the game harder not only increases the time it takes to beat, but the payoff is that much greater.

heroquest 11-01-2004 02:41 PM

I liked it, but I can't figure out how to have sex with my wives. It annoys me for some reason. Overall I thought the same as everyone else, good but too short.

Dont worry about havin sex, its kind of a let down. I had sex once with a normal wife, and once with Lady Grey... its just audio with a black screen, if i remember right.

Bionic Monkey 11-01-2004 07:33 PM

If you absolutely want to have sex with your wife though, you've basically got to chat her (or him) up for a few minutes. Give gifts, strike poses, laugh, things like that. Pretty soon, she/he will turn green, indicating a dynamic interaction option. Talk to them, and you'll be asked if you want to go to bed with your wife (even if it's a he). Say yes, and you're treated to a black screen with your wife moaning, and/or giggling, and/or saying "Ooh, that's nice.", and perhaps some other options I haven't discovered.

Have fun!

Kagemusha222 11-01-2004 07:54 PM

It was pretty good but I wanted to play the Fable that they talked about before it came out. Where was growing up? Where was the little kids growing up and coming after me after I killed their father? It wasnt that it was short, (although the story was over before I knew it) there is a wealth of things to do in the game. I have fun just kicking the severed heads around and if you use the slow time spell it almost can become a juggle. I guess I was expecting more of an Elder Scrolls game. Hopefully the sequel will implement some more of the ideas that the took out of this one. I see it as the beginning of an Action/RPG franchise on the XBOX something that the big black box sorely needs.

Replaying it as pure users (magic, theif, brute etc) is fun but does get repetative. Yet I am still finding new things (such as returning to youth etc) also I have yet to max out on all my skills. Did anyone use summons? and what was the best creature you got with yours? My current one is the white balverine.

mikey4fingaz 11-07-2004 04:02 PM

I loved it all the way through..
:D

lpj8 01-06-2005 12:13 PM

I finally got my hands on Fable for Christmas, and yes, the main quest is to short and no, its not the best role playing game of all time (For me, thats Final Fantasy II).
However, there are many things to like here.
I personally like the combat system. Its not as satifying as Ninja Gaiden, but its very functional. The magic system is pretty standard, but there are a good range of skills. Although the main quest is short, there is so much extra stuff to do. I personally like turning up ever nook and cranny of a game, so I had a blast.
I didn't like the slow down in the frame rate that occurs, and I wish the game would change more depending on the actions you take.
I liken Fable to a more accessible Morrowind. If you thought Morrowind was too big, open ended, and had no idea of what you were doing, then you may like fable.

heccubusiv 01-06-2005 08:32 PM

too short of a game.. and i thought it would be more open based. It was too linear than i expected. I thought it would be very open ended but found the game to be extremely linear.

omega2K4 01-07-2005 12:42 PM

I loved it, it was a great game, albeit short. Still better than any Final Fantasy game IMO.

Dostoevsky 01-10-2005 02:39 AM

I eagerly anticipated Fable for years, way back when it went by 'Project Ego.' That being said, I am a little disappointed by the final product; not because it sucks, it's actually a very good game, I just expected it to be the very best game I ever played and it's just not. I think Big Blue Box tried to do to many things with the game and in the end had to cut out a bunch of stuff leaving them with a shell of what Peter Moyneux (sp?) originally envisioned for his Project Ego. Am I the only one who feels the storyline behind Fable is completely hokey and sucky?

It's a fun game overall, I just wish I hadn't paid $50 for it before seeing it for $35 on the internet, that sucked. I wish I would have tried KOTOR II first also.
