Forgot the name of this old PC game...

I used to think it was called "Hero Quest," but I remember that's the name of an old board game I used to play. It's kinda like King's Quest, only it's black and white. You have to type your actions (I remember typing, "Pick nose" and it said something like, "As you shove the lockpick up your nose, you have no chance to wonder why as it pierces your brain and you die."). I remember one scene shows a shiny thing in a dark alley-way. If you go to investigate it, it turns out some thieves put a shiny coin there to lure you in so they can jump you and kill you.

Sorry, but that's all I can remember.

Sounds like one of the early Quest for Glory games, probably the first one ("So You Wanna Be a Hero" I believe was the title. Excellent series.

Idid a search on that, and although the main character looks familiar (I remember he had light or "blonde" hair), the game I played was black and white. Also, the characters in the screenshot I saw looked a bit too chunky so to speak. The game I played had more pixelized characters. They weren't as bad as atari, but they weren't as good as the screenshots I saw.

Update:
Found this on this site: http://www.geocities.com/TimesSquare/Arcade/7435/

"Quest for Glory 1: So You Want to Be a Hero? was first released under the series title of Hero's Quest by Sierra Online in 1989. Implemented using Sierra's SCI game interpreter engine, it featured a 16 color EGA graphics and a text-based parser interface. Later, due to legal reasons, the series title was changed to Quest for Glory (the name was too similar to a board game 'Hero Quest' being developed by Milton Bradley)."

So, maybe I played it on a computer with a black and white monitor? I was really little when I played it, I know that much. Plus, this box cover looks EXTREMELY like the box stuck in my memory.

I think you found my game, davik. Thanks!

P.S. I don't remember the 3-D fighting engine. Maybe I just didn't get far enough in the game.

I can also garuntee that those lines came from "So You Want to be a Hero".

One thing to note about this game is that there's a 'newer' version that got a graphical overhaul. I'm fairly sure it's abandonware also.

The "newer" versions aren't abandonware, they're freeware. They don't appear to have Quest For Glory I yet... The group is called Anonymous Game Developers and they offer King's Quest I, King's Quest II and Quest For Glory II (in development) currently. The graphics are MUCH improved, but the game play and "boards/screens" are exactly the same as are the commands and options. They also have added speech packs to some (or all) of the games. Very cool!

I think Pellaz is talking about the difference between the EGA and VGA versions; 16 color v 256 color.

actually there was a newere version of Quest for Glory 1 put out, by Sierra. I'm not sure whether its abandonware or not (I doubt it). It was 256k. It also changed the interface from typed commands to mouse. Its one of the funniest, and most entertaining PC games to come out of that era, far better than Leisure Suit Larry. For those that enjoyed the Quest for Glory games, might I suggest looking into "Zack McCrakin" A wonderful game about a tabloid reporter that came with an actual fold out newspaper when you bought it. The newspaper was the hint guide, as all sorts of puzzles could be solved by reading it.
