Rome: Total War

Is anyone else playing this game? I find the game really good, I just wish the camera controls were a little better.

Hmm.. check out this video of Elephants vs Puppies.

I'm playing it and love it. All the Total War games have been great. Rome almost feels like the sequel to Lords of the Realm 2 that I was waiting for. Because the one that was relased sure licked balls.

So yeah, I think it is great, my girlfriend does not. Sigh.

Awesome game, but they need a patch to fix the MP (from what I've heard), and the squalor issues.

thriolith 10-07-2004 06:35 PM

They've just recently released a patch, but it doesn't look like it fixes really that much...

Dward04 10-07-2004 07:33 PM

I played some of the Single Player at a friends , but whats the Multiplayer play like?

Unfortunately, my comp isn't quite up to R:TW. I have played Shogun: Total War for a few years and recently bought Medieval: Total War with the Viking Invasion expansion (The AI Vikings are beating me to a pulp). The camera controls are rather clunky in each game, but you get used to it.

My biggest complaint with the 2 games of the Total War series that I've played is that the grand campaigns lack direction beyond 'go forth and kill everything that moves on the map.' Is this any different in R:TW?

Hi,
I'm loving it so far. I love the huge cinematic battles and I enjoy just watching the units interact on the battlefield. I found the camera clunky at first, but now I have worked out how it works for the most part (with the exception of the fact that the camera is "tied" to a unit and can only move so far from that unit, which means you can't really observe far-off units unless at least one of your units is near to them).

I am really impressed with how it plays, and I love the large battles :D.
Thanks,
Manga

I played the demo...I found it fun kicking romes ass!

mmiller0617 10-08-2004 11:34 AM

Is it an RTS? Are there campaign modes? Not having played any of the other Total War series I am not sure.

Wow, I didn't realise this had come out already - All the other TWs were great, and I never disliked the realism that the tied-to unit camera provides, though it could always have had a greater degree of up-down rotation. Is everyone who wants to play it going to have to buy a new PC, or is it reasonably tidy? Also, does anyone know if it will come out on the Mac? (I'll go goole it and find out...)

Ya its out..but I will wait till the price comes down on it

I find that the patch fixed plenty. Before, you couldn't access the MP portion of the game thru the game itself, but had to use Gamespy. Now it works fine. A bunch of other MP fixes have been included as well, the host isn't the only one that can choose which faction you play, the point limit is changeable, etc.

It also runs good, even on lower spec machines. Reason being is because it isn't actually a full 3d game. It's a hybrid 2d/3d game. When the camera gets a certain distance away from units, they go from being 3d models to 2d sprites. It's hardly noticable (in fact I didn't notice until someone posted about it on another forum, and even still it's hard to tell), and the game is still a beauty to look at.

Played the demo. Thanks, you guys convinced me to get it.

portwineboy 10-10-2004 10:06 PM

It's a fantastic game and I just removed Medieval:TW from my comp for the first time since the day it came out because I probably won't go back after playing Rome:TW

Between R:TW, Evil Genius, Sims2, BF:V 1.2 patch, Dawn of War, WoW open beta and the fileplanet subscriber giveaway for Matrix Online beta keys....I have to say, it's not a bad time to be unemployed.

dbc 10-11-2004 12:33 AM

I've played the demo, looking forward to the full version once I have some money.

thriolith 10-11-2004 08:07 PM

mmiller0617: yes, it's an RTS unlike any other. lol

whocarz: ah, i haven't played multiplayer, that's why i wouldn't know the significance of the patch to MP players.

Been playing for a few days and have to say I'm addicted, not sure if I like the computer auto picking what army I control and what it controls as re-enforcements

archer2371 10-28-2004 07:28 PM

I just placed my order, I'm excited and concerned at the same time. Excited because it's a kickass game, concerned because I think my life will suffer from it, college, work, women, food, sleep, etc.

hello my future girlfriend!

or at least at Christmas... I've heard that it takes longer to manage each turn... Any truth to that?

omega2K4 10-30-2004 01:48 PM

I like it, very huge battles. I still like Rise of Nations or Civilization III the best, though.

You mean longer as in time spent to manage all your towns and cities? I suppose so, since it takes an incredible amount of time managing everything, however you could let AI control some or all of them. I'm sure it wasn't longer in the previous two titles, which I haven't played.
