Stealth games

I am a HUGE fan of games that require stealth and espionage and secret service stuff like that. The one game that got me hooked on this is Goldeneye for N64. I would just keep replaying the first stage and the two snow-stages over and over again because I LOVE the feeling of sneaking around, wreaking undetected havok. I'm going to list some games that involve (heavily) the stealth aspect and I ask you to add to it with other similar games. Thanks! :D

Goldeneye; N64
Metal Gear Solid; PS
Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell; PS2
Tenchu: Stealth Assassins; PS
Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven; PS2
SOCOM: U.S. Navy Seals; PS2

SOCOM would be a perfect example if only the sniper cross-hair didn't weave so much.

Bim 09-25-2004 12:58 PM

I rember Mark of Kri, having some really cool stealth moments. I belive it had a whole stealth level. The snow one i belive, where you shot the monkeys.

I enjoyed splinter cell as well. Very awsome stealth game as well. I have another game that is trying to come to mind, i just can't remember it's name.

oblar 09-25-2004 02:30 PM

you seem to only have games with present day settings...

if you don't mind older settings, then the Thief series is really good.
it emphasizes stealth unlike any other game I have played, because you just can't survive unscathed on a one on one battle very well... it is very cool... excellent game to play in the dark with surround sound as well.

Lasereth 09-25-2004 03:24 PM

Yeah, Mark of Kri was a serious-stealth game. If you were caught, it was basically game over unless you could kill the enemies before they called for reinforcements. It's one of the best games for PS2...I can't wait for the sequel!

I liked Splinter cell pandora tommorow; probably my favorite stealth game to date. But I'm looking foward to twin snakes!

You mean SNAKE EATER? TWIN SNAKES is already out on the Cube and it's fucking good.

killaudio 09-25-2004 11:41 PM

Hitman series are quite fun for stealth and planning and stuff, although they are quite limited.

Mr_Wall 09-26-2004 03:56 AM

Hitman was stealth??? I don't remember that part

livewirerc 09-26-2004 05:50 AM

I think my faves are still the original two Thief games for the PC. I haven't tried the third yet, but I remember many a harrowing moment as a guard walks by and you hope the shadow you're trying to hide in will conceal you. Good stuff. :)

Definitely. And when not trying to be stealthy, it still has that espionage effect. The first level has you hiding up on top of a building to snipe the leader of a gang. Then there are those levels where you have to dress up as a gang leader or whatnot and infiltrate a base, or assasinate someone in a bar. You weren't exactly hiding in shadows, but you were definitely trying to "get in undetected."

...man...now I wanna go play Hitman. hehe.

BTW, thank you all for your responses! I will definitely check out some if not all of the games you mentioned! If you know of any more, please let me know.

Scipio 09-26-2004 09:05 PM

Definitely Hitman and Splinter Cell. Also, the Thief series is good, as is Deus Ex and its second rate sequel.

I'd have to say I love MGS for PSX. It provided the most complete gaming experience in a story-driven game ever, as well as a kick-ass story. Goldeneye was great too. I don't like the idea that EA is doing a Goldeneye 2. The engine made that game, and I think that it was the best Bond movie, bar none, and that expanding on the story would just ruin it.

*edit*

I forgot the Rainbow Six games. Incredible.

thriolith 09-28-2004 11:55 AM

Hitman and Thief series.

stonegrody 09-28-2004 12:43 PM

I was looking forward to Starcraft: Ghost but it keeps getting delayed. That should be good once it finally gets released.

Bim 09-28-2004 12:58 PM

Sly Cooper was a fun stealth game also.

Solid Snake 09-29-2004 09:15 AM

MGS has the better storyline and more interesting characters but Splinter Cell is a lot more stealth-based. So it's more true to the stealth-based genre than MGS is.

Ripsaw 09-29-2004 10:55 AM

Wolverine's Revenge seemed stealthy at first glance. I couldn't play more than twenty minutes of it, all told. Thank goodness it was a rental.

gar1976 09-29-2004 08:15 PM

Splinter cell is kicking my ass, and it's only my first mission. Man, it's tough.

omega2K4 09-30-2004 11:19 AM

Splinter Cell, Hitman, and Thief games. Hitman is great, because you can be stealthy (sneaking up behind people and slitting their throat, choking them with piano wire, etc) or just run 'n' gun through the levels.

Yeah. I LOVE using the piano wire.

Slayer 09-30-2004 02:42 PM

No one like Manhunt here? You have to use stealth in this game, the enemy is fucking tough. I love hiding in the dark then throw a sawed head to scare the enemy  The game is pretty fun if you can stand the gore. :D

Mr. Munchy 10-06-2004 09:24 PM

Both Splinter Cell games are really, really well done. And sadly, I believe that Starcraft: Ghost was retooled a while back to make it more "shooter" type instead of stealthy.

I also enjoyed MGS2, a lot. Hmmm and the new Goldeneye game is essentially a sequel to Goldfinger, not Goldeneye (yeah it's pretty misleading).

Rdr4evr 10-06-2004 09:29 PM

Splinter Cell 1 and 2 is hands down the best stealth game I have ever played. I just bought NOLF 2 (yeah finally, it was only $9.99) and it totally fails in the stealth department.

Side note: I dont understand how these games work. NOLF 2 which is not graphically very detailed or complicated runs like hell on my computer even on med settings, yet Splinter Cell runs perfectly on all high settings and it is ten times better technologically. Oh well.

Architeuthis 10-07-2004 01:35 AM

MMORPGs are often ruled by stealthers..depending on who you talk too you will either hear that they are uber godlike or nerfed silly.

Dark Age of Camelot has a lot of stealth characters and they are really fun to play.
Ultima Online also has a lot of stealth potential.

I realize this is a bit besides the games you mentioned, but in the MMORPGs you are up against other people, not AI. That can sometimes add a bit of adrenalin to the mix :)

mdrop 10-07-2004 03:53 AM

Thief 2 and Hitman/Hitman 2 are easily the best stealth games ever. I like the Splinter Cell-series as well, always been a Clancy fan and they're indeed superbly done. The only bad thing about them is that you're often moving on rails in the levels. While the game is done so good that you don't actually notice that too much and the level design works well, it takes away the option of strategic planning and multiple paths that made Thief and Hitman great.

Tribes 2 I used to be a huge stealther. Ok I know looking at tribes 2 at first glance it’s a massive crazy futuristic battle, but playing deeper into it, equipping a cloak pack with the smallest armour, flash bang grenades, shock lance, elf gun and the blaster one can have quite a stealthy game.

What makes it so much fun to me is your opponents are all humans, so if you make one mistake the person in the juggernaught armour is going to turn around and launch mortars around the corner and blow up half the corridor including you. Feels so rewarding when you manage to sneak past everyone, and destroy the power generators in a massive game.

Both Deus Ex I and II are open-ended to allow for many styles of play, including stealth. After playing the Deus Ex II, I'd recommend playing the first one even if it's a little outdated - its incredibly immersive, detailed, and has many hours of gameplay.

Shizukana 10-07-2004 11:15 PM

Tenchu 3: Wrath of Heaven (think that's what it was called)

Watched a friend play it, there was a lot of stealth involved... basically you try to use l33t ninja tactics like running on rooftops and stuff, combined with either using a blowgun with deadly accuracy or getting over a guard and surprising them, breaking their neck before they can shout.

Looked pretty fun, never actually played it though. Definately lots of stealth involved.

I love playing sniper maps on RS3: Ravenshield/Athena Sword

Just so you know, he doesn't break their neck; he either slits their neck or decapitates the head entirely. :)

Deus Ex 1 might be the best game ever made. The stealth options sort of go down as the game progresses, and it does have a few balance issues, but it's a fine game.

LOL... was it the spine that he broke then? I remember something being broken in one of the moves... those silly and somewhat cheesy x-ray shots stuck in my head. ;)

the closest thing to a stealth game i ever played was hitman 2. i got frustrated with it tho after a while. in the first mission, i had to get inside this heavily guarded mansion. im outside, i see a mailman walking up to it, so i think "i'll steal his clothes!" so i run up to him with my gun, he sees me and runs away.
take 2: this time i sneak up behind him while he's peein in a tree, then i strangle him. i take his clothes after hiding his body and start walking to the gate. im thinking "damn, that's far." so i start running, the guards at the gate see me running and shoot me >_<
take 3: this time i walk up slowly to the gate, and the guards stop me at the gate. they frisk me and find my weapons, then call me "ASSASIN!" and shoot me down. >_<
take 4: this time i just shoot everyone down and beat the mission. horray for me.

What about Chronicles of Riddick?

I admit a deep loathing to Pitch Black. I have not seen the new movie, though I will probably rent it. That said, Chronicles of Riddick on the Xbox is the best console shooted I've ever played (yes better than Halo, tho that game rocks a lot too), and actually has quite a bit of the gameplay tied into stealthy, creeping around in the dark and sneaking up on guards armed with automatic rifles with your bare hands (or with a shiv or club). Its actually quite reminiscent of Manhunt in those parts, although not as gorey or sensational. And I loved Manhunt as well, becasue it was that gorey and over the top.

Hitman 2 was a lot of fun. I then played Hitman: Contracts and came to the decision I just didnt like the series anymore. Its too unforgiving. Its too easy to be caught while trying to be stealthy, and while you can run and gun through it, its not the best shooter out there, nor was it meant to be. Maybe I'm just lame, but I didnt enjoy the experience.

Mark of Kri is awesome. Amazing, amazing game. Very underrated. Wolverine's Revenge was a lot like that, only not as good across the board. If you PS2 people out there like stealth and havent played Mark of Kri its practically free if purchased used now. I must recommend it.
