Scarface...the game?

Film fans who played Grand Theft Auto: Vice City picked up on numerous references to the classic film Scarface. Besides the 1980s Miami milieu and emphasis on cocaine trafficking, the game also featured several nods to the Brian De Palma crime epic, most notably a finale involving a massive army of mercenaries assaulting a drug lord's garishly decorated mansion.

Today, VU Games announced that it is planning a game that will do more than just pay homage to Scarface. The third-person shooter will put players into the shoes of the film's homicidal protagonist, Tony Montana, who was played with famously foul-mouthed aplomb in the film by Al Pacino. The game Scarface will be developed by Radical Games and is currently scheduled for a fall 2005 release for unspecified platforms.

"The treacherous world of Scarface is a natural property to translate into a cinematic gameplay experience," said VU Game's executive vice president, Michael Pole. "The game will feature cutting-edge technology, a compelling storyline, and the unprecedented experience of playing as one of Hollywood’s most notorious gangsters, Tony Montana."

For those unfamiliar with Tony Montana's story, Scarface the film traces the ex-con's rise to power in the Miami underworld. Starting off as a penniless refugee from the 1980 Mariel Boatlift, Cuban ex-con Montana works his way into the good graces of drug kingpin Frank Lopez (Robert Loggia) by performing a series of criminal errands. However, his lust for power--and Lopez's Elvira (Michelle Pfeiffer)--causes Montana to double-cross Lopez and forge his own alliance with a Colombian cartel. However, that arrangement backfires, leading to the bloody climax borrowed by Vice City.
I don't know how well this will be considering Vice City was pretty much Scarface the game. Just different characters, but pretty much the same plot. Who knows, only time will tell.

Umm...yeah. Vice City couldn't be more like Scarface. Not in a bad way, it's by far one of my favorite games of all time. This company better make one hell of a bad ass game in order to top GTA. Good luck suckaz!

Should be interesting though.

I think they should just leave Vice City alone. Trying to make a game to portray Scarface that's better than Vice City is tough...Vice City is still in my top five best games ever list. Rock on Tommy Vercetti!

it's gonna be hard to top Vice City

I wouldn't hold your breath for this game. Radical Entertainment (the game's developer), is a pretty shitty developer with games like Dark Summit, Simpson's Road Rage, Dark Angel, Hulk, and The Simpsons: Hit and Run (the only half decent game there). You can find even more of their craptacular games @ http://www.radical.ca/radext/low/games/gameArchive.asp

I think that GTA:VC enhanced the movie to the point where you can actually have a playable protagonist. i mean seriously? how are you supposed to beat the game? (movie spoiler ahead...stop reading now if you havn't seen it) have you house hijacked and get killed? JOY

i almost forgot...do you get energy when you sniff coke? or is it one of those things that when you first use it gives you health...then eventually you need it so that you health stays up? sounds like a game for the kids. withdrawl for the whole family

If you have read the new EGM (October 2004, which has Scarface on the cover) you can see all kinds of screenshots (which don't look too hot). And yes, you can snort coke to go into "Rage Mode". Its like bullet-time, but it makes your attacks stronger and more accurate, and you take no damage or less damage from attacks (they are still working on the rage mode stuff).

Are you going to play through the movie or is it going to be a different story?

"Players have seen the movie---the movies does a great job of telling that story," says Peter Wanat, senior producer at VU Games (Wanat also produced Chronicles of Riddick on Xbox). "We would much rather give the player a unique and new experience. We're gonna get away from games [where] you've seen the movie, [now] play the movie. If Tony doesn't die in the mansion scene, what happens?" What happens is a whole lotta drug dealing, murderous rampaging, and sweet revenge as Tony rebuilds his empire kilo by kilo, brick by gaudy, gold-leafed brick."
Quoted straight from EGM #183 on pages 88-90.

Wait, he doesn't die in the movie?

You can't tell me that after he was shot and everybody left he just jumped up, brushed himself off and goes on his way.

They better explain this to me in a logical way and I'm not accepting voodoo!

omega2K4 08-19-2004 04:33 AM

It is a totally new story, he doesn't die in the assault on his mansion, but he is wounded. The whole game is about trying to rebuild your empire and getting your revenge on Alejandro Sosa. The game's story is being written by David McKenna who also wrote Blow and American History X.
