doom 3 ending (spoiler!!)

hey i beat doom 3 today and i dont get the fucking ending with the "evil scientist" showing up at the end. does this mean there is going to be a doom 4 (even though ive heard 3is the last one)
anyone care to explain it :-\ thx

Mr.Deflok 08-10-2004 09:37 PM

A Doom 4 is possible but not in the immediate future. More than likely we'll be seeing mission packs though.

The ending was just to show that Betruger (sp) was still alive (in a sense) and that there was a possibility of a sequel.

Besides, the Soul-Cube sealed off the gateway to Hell and the man-made portals would've been decomissioned (or at least one would hope).

BTW, I fucking LOVE this game. The point where the 2 Hell Knights come through the gateway to fuck shit up is one of the greatest and most memorable gaming experiences in my life.

ironchefkorea 08-10-2004 11:30 PM

I think Carmack has said that there will be expansion packs using this engine. I'm guessing a Phobos incident, one of Mars' moons. As for Betruger, I'm not sure how to interpret that last scene - it's either he ended up being nothing but a pawn in hell (and just turned into another demon), serving a greater being, or that he actually was that greater being. Not quite sure.

Honestly I'm just waiting for someone to copy the level design and monsters from Doom 95 into this engine. Basically Recreate Doom 95 using Doom3 technology, I wouldn't know what I'd do with myself.

kutulu 08-11-2004 11:35 AM

How long did it take you to finish the game? I hate it when I spend $50 on a game only to beat it in a couple days

aeturnum 08-11-2004 04:57 PM

It took me about a week to get through it, though that was playing a good ammount.

Dilbert1234567 08-11-2004 07:18 PM

it took me 16 hours to beat. kinda let down.

but im going back through with god mode and the rocket launcher so its all cool

Which level is that?

Mr.Deflok 08-13-2004 07:39 AM

The map name is delta4 I think so if you go into your console and type "map game/delta4" you should get it.

inferno360 08-13-2004 07:51 AM

Waiting for the mods to come out will be the highlight of your purchase. Many are in the works. Two big ones that come to mind are OSP (If you don't know what OSP is, go to the site and find out.) and Doom3Fortress.

Sounds good to me. Plus it's good that doom3 is out now, gives me a springboard of hope that we'll see quake 4 in (maybe) 2005.

Vizzini 08-13-2004 10:49 PM

I was just thinking. Near the end, your mission was to find the sergeant right? This was Sgt Kelly correct? If I remember correctly it then jumps to finding the portal and the final end boss.

I can't remember what happened to the sgt.

ironchefkorea 08-14-2004 11:53 AM

you search for the sarge in the teleporting area after you come back from Hell the first time. He's the giant robot thing with the BFG on his arm.

It took me about 50 attempts to beat the bastard. From the little BFG video I though you had to kill him by blowing up the BFG projectiless. Finally I got so frusturated that I pulled out my Rocket Launcher and started spamming away...8 rockets later he was dead  I didn't know whether to laugh or cry.

hehe he was easy, i just kept shooting and dodging, and then he was dead. i only used the chain gun and the shot gun, chain gun to the face is not a prety sight, nor point blank shoots with the shot gun.

I feel like I remember watching the videos released about making Doom 3 and Carmack saying that they were done with the series and working on a new story....

pocon1 08-16-2004 06:46 PM

SArge was a hell of a lot easier than the guardian. Sarge took a couple of rockets, then the soul cube at his ass up.

Yeah, Sarge pwned me once, hit me in the face with the BFG. After that, I figured out his strategy, then I soul-cubed the bitch.

Gabbyness 08-22-2004 01:18 PM

I just beat it, pretty awesome game, took me over a week with a decent amount of playing. The guardian was definitely the toughest guy, I thought. The final boss was kind of a shmuck.

Redjake 08-24-2004 01:47 PM

I just beat it yesterday, took since the day it was released up until yesterday for me to beat it. I don't play games for hours at a time like a lot of people. That way, for me, right now, I see Doom 3 as an incredibly long game. I like it that way. VERY good game overall.

I loved the Sarge quote: "WELCOME TO THE MESS HALL!!"

and yes, I died like 80 times in a row and finally realized you just gotta shoot the shit out of him to kill him. then I killed him the next time I tried.

damianjames 08-25-2004 05:35 PM

I think its a very pretty game with a letdown in gameplay. This is going to be one to wait for the mods... think of DoD with this engine!

AlCap0wn 08-28-2004 08:59 PM

Overall, I'm happy with it. T'was good fun indeed, but a number of things just bugged/pissed me off. :P

My not-so-quick take on things and/or beefs.

1. "Difficulty, or lack thereof."
Maybe it's just that my cojoņes are the size of the Epcot Center, but I found the game, overall, too damned easy. The only thing I had difficulty with were the fucking spider bastards jumping and biting at my face in my dreams. Those things just - pardon my French - creeped me right the fuck out. Don't worry, I plan to play through on Nightmare again on a Soul-Cube fueled rampage to see if it gets rougher. ;)

2. "Bosses? I just saw bigger targets."
The bosses were ... well, pathetic. The first one was the toughest only because I had no idea the crazy bitch was about to start mind-chucking bits of debris at me. Guardian was cake, Sarge got his mechanical clock cleaned, the second wave of Vagarys met a shiny green death ... and the Cyberdemon? Please. For a ten-story-tall Godzilla of a boss, I was sincerely appalled when he went down with that little fight.

3. "Ammo for all!"
I have no idea if this is my own frugality or what, but I did not have a hard time whatsoever with ammunition. When I got sucked into Hell the first time, I had a full belt of chaingun ammo, 30 grenades, and several dozen rockets, among other things. If I'd known I was going to be stripped of my glowing blue and green plasma arms, I'd have been a little more generous with the death instead of ambushing critters with a single shotgun blast - which, by the way, tears apart all the smaller monsters (up to the tentacle zombies) in a single shot.

4. "Artificial stupidity."
Sure, the occasional "tuck and roll" from a zombie marine is nice, but for the most part, the enemies were monumentally stupid. I took on a Hellknight with a shotgun because I could. Big lumbering idiot just kept swinging. Swing and a miss - you're dead, bitch!

But despite all this - I still enjoyed Doom 3. There were just too many moments where I went "Holy shit, that's (cool/amazing/scary/OMGWTF)" - like sighting the shadow cast on the wall by the first Trite.

Oh, and by the way, I did not use any gameplay mods like Duct Tape or Armor Balance. I did use the Trent Reznor soundpack, self-shadowing, and parallax mapping though. Eye and earcandy to further haunt my dreams with unholy multimedia. :)

Ah, just finished this one this evening and now feel qualified to review it.

This game is great. It's not nearly as amazing or revolutionary as the first one was, but it's definately worth playing. I agree with most of the other reviews out there that say this game is a lot of eye candy, but brings nothing new to the series or the genre. I had very high expectations for this one, and it managed to live up to most of them.

One of my complaints is the breaking away from the original id foundations. Ever since Commander Keen, id has liked to show the results of your actions. Killing enemies leaves them dead on the screen instead of just dissapearing like they do in Mario Bros. In Doom3, this often isn't so... enemies just dissapear to wherever they came from.

I also resented the relentlessness of the enemies. Every time I tried to pay attention to the story by listening to one of the information booths or my PDA, I kept getting attacked and distracted from what was going on. Too often I had no idea what my goals were or why I was trying to achieve them. Some have said that Doom3 is lacking in story, but I feel like the story is there, it's just hard to pay attention to.

Aside from these minor annoyances, I really did like the game. I even found a neat easter egg just before the final boss. In the caustrophobic coradors before teleporting to the final boss area, if you go left, you'll see a brick with the id software logo on it. Approach the brick and click on it like a computer terminal. It will open a wall to a secret area with a PDA left by the id software team. ;-)

Did you find the disembowled, upside-down Christ nailed to the wall in Hell? :D

Took me over a month... mainly at each night after work, and a bit on the weekends.
Without a doubt, it was worth my $58

Really? I believe it wasn't out in stores until August 3rd... You posted on August 30th... That'd be less than a month, unless you meant you plan to finish it sometime next week. :hmm:

bookerV 09-06-2004 04:05 PM

Well I finally just finished this game. It took me a long time, but I didn't get to play it often. Maybe once or twice a week for a couple of hours at a time. I thought it was very well done. The story is definitely there if you pay attention and look for it. Like seeing the emails back and forth from the various staff in all the PDAs. The guardian was definitely the hardest boss for me, the rest were pretty easy. I was disappointed in the last boss fight. It was way too easy. I was shocked when he went down so easily.

The way I interpreted the ending was that Bertruger just ended up being a lesser demon in hell. He was a pawn trying to free the demons, and when it didn't work he got stuck in hell as a demon and there he will stay. All in all, it was a lot of fun and I can't wait for some of the mods...

Dungeon_Shade 09-18-2004 05:16 PM

Hehe. I personally thought the ending to that game sucked. The end boss was WAY to easy. It should have been alot of scares before the end, not some gay boss.
