Game Cheats

I was wondering how many out there use game cheats and if you do; for what reasons.

Theres is no better way to ruin a game by making it boring than using a cheat. (IMO)

I use them for 2 reasons 1) If I have become so insamely frustrated with trying to beat a game- where this little voice tells me that the PC must be cheating. It has developed an AI that it wont tolerated letting me win- so I use a cheat. (That of course is BS though)

2) I feel Im waisting too much time in a game when I should be developing better skills with multimedia software, learning code, etc and intentionally making the game boring will help get over faster.

Ofcourse you do have developers out there that actually dont design any cheats into their games like CIVIII.

todd 07-20-2004 10:28 PM

If I buy the game (console game) with my own money with the intention of beating it, I don't cheat at all. But if I rent a game that I know for sure I will never buy, and I want to just fool around with it and have fun, I might see what kind of cheats are out there.

I don't play many PC games anymore. But when I do, I almost always (98%) wait untill I beat the game to try out some cheats. If I do cheat before hand its because I lost interest in the gameplay and want to do something fun with it, or I'm too frusterated to even want to attempt it anymore.

SecretMethod70 07-21-2004 01:24 AM

The only way I ever cheat is by consulting a walkthrough. I do this when I have already spent great periods of time trying to figure out what I have to do next and am sick of not knowing. I look up the answer and then continue to not cheat.

GakFace 07-21-2004 01:30 AM

If I'm doing a RPG and I get incredibly lost, I'll consult a walkthrough for that single spot, just so I can figure out what I missed.. its a puzzle and I couldn't figure it out.. but I want to play the rest of the game... I can admit that much and go on.

I'll use cheats if I feel like screwing around in a game.. no real reason, but to mess around with 'em.

Some games I really really want to see the story line.. these tends to be the kinds of games I won't really ever play, so I'll cheat through them to read up on the story line.

The main time though when I'd be caught cheating is simply after I beat the game. I figure once I've beaten it, then who cares if I cheat? I've already proven to myself that I can do it.

I will never ever use a hack/cheat in online play though. If its single player you're only messing with your game experience (and using a cheat might be part of the experience you are going for), but online.. you affect others.. so there I'm clean through the very end.

MSD 07-21-2004 01:52 AM

I had to do that today. I'm replaying Deus Ex, and was in the VersaLife helicopter bay. I released the weapons lock, and Jock took off without shooting the blast doors open. I got the message that he was firing a missile, but he was gone and didn't shoot. I had to enable cheats to open the blast doors.

Destrox 07-21-2004 04:39 AM

Ah yes, cheats. It brings out the true ignorance in people that are against it in how they fail to see you can actually have fun with these things.

I will cheat for the following reasons:
* Have become so frustrated with a level/boss that it is no longer fun.
* I have beat this game before, and only wish to fuck around now. In other words, get more replay value out of it.

Most any time I cheat it is because I wish to enjoy my self. I dont play games for a challange or to be frustrated, I play to have a good time.

Fuck if I care cheating takes away from the *gaming experience*, they let me enjoy the little time I get to play them.

Nothing above relates to any shape or form of a multiplayer game.

huh? you must have missed the "cheat" menu!

Confederate 07-21-2004 11:37 AM

I use them when i become too frustrated as was said before, or I have already beaten a game, like a FPS, and I just feel like releasing anger and annihilating everyone.

the_marq 07-21-2004 11:45 AM

As was already said; I never use cheats until I have beat the game straight up. I will consult with walkthrus if I really get stuck, with Spinter Cell:PT it was mandatory especially the last mission. I was banging around on that shitshow for over an hour before I could even figure out what the goal was. I don't really consider scanning walkthru to be cheating anyway.

However, I do like to use cheats in games that I have already beat, all weapons/god mode can be a ton of fun...IDKFA baby!

This is me on a rare case. Games like Silent Hill, where, for me, the object is to just "get through" and "maintain personal sanity." Those are about the only games that I've ever used a FAQ or walkthough on. I relied on one for about 10 minutes of Kingdom Hearts, but I can manage the rest on my own, thanks. Oh yeah, when I was 8 years old and had the original Doom games running on the old p120, I became very aware of the console and "GOD mode."

MPower 07-21-2004 01:57 PM

I had to use one the other day... I saved a game right before I got annihilated. I had to use a god mode cheat to not get killed when I loaded the game, proceed the turn the cheat off. I think thats a good justification of cheat use.

ironchefkorea 07-21-2004 04:45 PM

The only times that I feel cheating is justified is when you are playing a game which has become so drawn out and boring that you only wish to see the end and be done with it forever. That said, I'm considering borrowing someone's gameshark so I can force my way through FFX.

Mantus 07-21-2004 05:13 PM

To finish boring games or make ones you already beat a bit more exciting - though I find that never works.

Gman 07-21-2004 10:05 PM

Sometimes I do it just to fool around, but usually I only cheat when I just want to beat the game and be done with it.

I can't stand having a game on the shelf unfinished, no matter how bad it is.

GakFace 07-21-2004 10:10 PM

The only time cheating will take away from the gaming experience is when another human player is involved at the same time.. as your cheating will detract from their fun. Single player though, yeah its for when you're so stuck you're bored of being stuck or wanna break something... so you use a cheat to get past that spot and continue with the fun. Or you're doing it just to fuck around. Then there's always the replayability value.

I always say.. "When it comes to single player games: Cheat all you want, just don't claim that you beat the game or that it is easy."

Mr.Deflok 07-22-2004 12:00 AM

Cheats in the old days were cool. If you played games, you cheated. The lack of a save feature brought this about. I remember playing Ninja Gaiden on the Gameboy when it first came out and guessing level passwords so I could skip that freakin jumping level.

I sometimes cheat after I've finished a game nowadays just to play around in the console area, and like SM70 I've been known to consult a walkthrough when stuck, especially when I'm trying to finish a game before buying a new one!

Slayer 07-22-2004 07:59 AM

I only cheat if I'm stuck on a level or don't know what to do.

Dwayne 07-22-2004 01:24 PM

I cheated in the original Deus Ex because I was so engrossed in the story and didnt want to have to replay parts after getting killed. I also cheat in GTA just because its fun to have a tank to drive around killing people in. However, I did not cheat in Halo, Need for Speed Underground, Tony Hawk....etc...

Cervantes 07-25-2004 11:40 PM

The only time I use cheats is when I explore games. When I investigate every corner to get to know it fully. Otherwhise I don't use cheats.

sailor 07-26-2004 11:02 AM

I usually crank up a cheat after I have finished a game. For example, last night I cranked up Far Cry, turned on god mode and gave myself all the weapons, and then ran around having fun blasting stuff. When you are playing the game that first time, cheats are no good, but when you just want to crank up a level and blast through it? Sure.

Its also fun to use to play levels with weapons you may not have been able to get until later in the game.

Jesus! Is this game supposed to be this fucking hard? I'm playing on medium, and I've never had my ass handed to me so many times in a game!

Yeah, it was pretty hard. After getting my ass handed to me, I restarted in easy, and towards the end still had to turn on a cheat to get me through. It was crazy hard. When it gets to the point of not being fun anymore, break out the cheats.

bltzkriegmcanon 07-26-2004 12:20 PM

Right, I'm on the last part where all the Trigens are between you and Doyle, and I haven't cheated yet, but dammit, I'm getting really tempted to do so. I mean, how many motherfucking rocket beasts do I have to kill to get across the Mordor-posing volcano lair?!

At least I have the animal mother machine gun.

Haha, thats right where I turned on god mode. I got *really* sick of getting killed over and over and over and...

When you started the game up did you uncheck the autobalance AI option? That's what fucked me up, I kept owning the Trigens and they learnt... and well, they learnt me afterwards. Awesome game though but it had no replay value. Nice to show off your graphics card to people.

bltzkriegmcanon 07-27-2004 05:05 AM

Not really sure there Mr. Deflok. Man, if that was the case, then I was really just banging my head against the desk in that final Volcano-Trigen-shitstorm. What always got me on that level wasn't the rocketcocks, it was the little machine gun fuckers who could hit you from, I don't know, a DAMN MILE AWAY!!!! I mean, that's where I lost the majority of my health from. I replayed the Krieger-battle just so I could grab the right weapons before that last savepoint.

sashime76 07-27-2004 08:41 AM

when my 6 year old nephew gets stuck in a Harry Potter game, uncle (me) needs to figure a way out to help him.

Arc101 07-30-2004 09:23 AM

Far Cry was a fun game to play - I did it without having to cheat - but I was tempted a few times to cheat becasue I died so much. But anyway I only ever use walkthroughs in games when I get stuck. Also useful to look at walkthroughs after I've completed a game just to see how much I've missed doing.

cheeterbo 08-03-2004 01:27 PM

if i like the game, i dont use cheats. if i get stuck, i might look for a walkthrough.

if i dont care about the game, i will immediately use the cheats and open up everything.

on reason i love xbox live is that, as far as i have found out, it is impossible to use any cheats. when i went pc-live gaming, it was all over the place

dorst 08-31-2004 10:10 AM

NOT TRUE .. u can cheat on ant system weather it`s x-box live or playstation 2 with their D.N.A.S system . it all depends on where the initial codes are loaded and placed , even possable to burn a new game along with the codes instaled in the new disk . when the u are being scanned by what ever system , it won`t detect the codes because they are incrypted into the disk itself .

Redjake 08-31-2004 11:25 AM

I never, ever, ever, ever cheat unless I've beat the game, and usually I still don't cheat. I hate it. If I get "insanely, unbeatably stuck" on a game, I let it sit and rot. I'll pick it up later and try again. And again. Until I beat it. And it will happen. Without cheats :)

Sometimes you find if you quit out of a game and let it stew for a bit when you come back you just breeze through the level that was fucking you up. I don't use cheat codes, but I use walkthroughs sometimes, i find it actually enriches the game for me, if i read about it up to the point that i'm at. I don't like to read too far ahead for spoilers, but i don't mind knowing what i'm supposed to do next, especially if it's an RPG where the gameplay is like 'walk here, click on this', because then you're not really dealing with tactics, it's story and character development, which are usually down to the choices you make anyway.

Carno 08-31-2004 04:48 PM

I use cheats if I feel like it.

Bim 08-31-2004 09:42 PM

I use them when I finnish a game also. I go back to previous levels and turn on god mode.

I espicaly like playing in god mode, with all weapons and such, in the first level of Hitman 2. The whole enter the compund and blow everyone away senerio, I love it. I usualy walk through the whole level. Never running, I belive i look more bad ass walking and gunning.

I found out the hard way that using cheats before finnishing the game totaly ruins it for me.
