Sierra Gets Shutdown
by Mike Meikle

The lights go out at old-school game company, Sierra, as Vivendi restructures its business.

More depressing news for the industry, Vivendi Universal Games has cut 350 staff and shut down Seattle-based Sierra. The venerable games company created some of the most popular action and adventure games in the 80's. The Sierra brand will live on in name only and projects tied to the Sierra pipeline, Half-Life 2, Ground Control II and Tribes: Vengeance are already being developed by other teams within Vivendi. Also affected by the restructuring, the Hoyle brand of card and board games have been canceled.

"Restructuring the organization and reducing our cost base are necessary to improve our operating effectiveness and profitability," said VU Games CEO Bruce Hack, in as terse a manner as possible. "This constitutes another important step in our turnaround plan aimed to better position the company for growth."

Along with VU Games restructuring, the game company is prepping up for profitability with a powerful lineup for the second half of 2004. VU Games is looking for some higher revenues with titles like World of Warcraft, Spyro: A Hero's Tail and the well-received The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay.
Bah, fuck you Vivendi. Fuck you in the ass with a barbed pole.

Holy crap, my friend works, or worked for sierra...haven't talked to him in ages, sounds like a phone call is in order.

Damnfinn 06-25-2004 10:00 AM

Well, what a bunch corporate crapola.

00111000 06-25-2004 10:05 AM

Never trust a CEO whos name is Hack....

Stompy 06-25-2004 10:07 AM

They haven't had a good game in AGES, so it shouldn't be that much of a surprise.

Jam 06-25-2004 11:08 AM

So since they save more money who thinks the price of games is going to go down ... lmfao

Fremen 06-25-2004 11:12 AM

Who's going to make the cards now?

the_marq 06-25-2004 11:28 AM

Did they make "The Incredible Machine?" That game was awesome (goes to get it).

NeverBorn 06-25-2004 11:52 AM

no more sierra?! That fucking sucks

Pellaz 06-25-2004 11:54 AM

Maybe now some of the great liscences can be developed by other companies, and come back to the world. KQ/QFG/SQ in the house :)

if anyone tries to intrude on my fantasy land, I'll hurt them.

Does this affect Lesuire Suit Larry?

Mr.Deflok 06-25-2004 03:35 PM

Why'd they stop making point-and-click adventure games I'll never know... this is truly sad news...

ShaniFaye 06-25-2004 03:38 PM

I truly loved Kings Quest :(

oblar 06-25-2004 04:02 PM

i loved the old kings quest format. After KQ4, they all lost there appeal to me. Point and click just wasn't for me. I remember how a friend of mine and myself had copies of KQ1. We decided one night to beat it, and just went through the whole game in a night together ;) it rocked

Scipio 06-25-2004 05:30 PM

Damn, I remember when Sierra used to be one of the big dogs. Sad times are these when Sierra goes out of business and half of all PC games are multi-ported. I suppose that's what happens when people are more interested in making money than in making games.

Well you got to have some source of revenue to pay for developers and production costs.

Frankly I'm not suprised, I think alot of people saw this comming.

subz 06-25-2004 09:31 PM

I was hooked on Sierra's adventure games. It's sad to see them go, but yeah, they haven't put out anything memorible as of late. So can't say that they didn't have it coming I guess.

DelayedReaction 06-25-2004 09:39 PM

Dammit. And another one of my childhood friends is killed in the name of corporate progress.

Bonesaw 06-25-2004 10:50 PM

the closest thing to recent in my mind is Gabriel Knight 3 (which was based on the traditional point and click but used a 3D world to play....totally awesome) It continued the story-line and used some really great graphics that didn't look totally crappy. Too bad Sierra didn't follow suit with a KQ/SQ game using the same style. oh well. I'll still buy HL2 whenever Vivendi/Valve decide to finally put it on the shelves.

My opinion on this is, when a company, no matter how "loved" by it's relative "community", is bound to be shutdown when it becomes unprofitable. An unprofitable company is an unsound investment, and a waste of time and effort. I agree with Krycheck's point, it should come as no surprise that a company as large as Vivendi should be willing to cut off an unprofitable division.

Tempboy 06-26-2004 05:44 AM

That sucks.

Oh well.. I can always go back and replay the old favs.. KQ5, SQ5, QFG4..

Kazic 06-26-2004 08:19 PM

either way tits a bigtime restructuring.

Mr.Deflok 06-26-2004 09:45 PM

I'm on a mission now to find the Space Quest Anthology, Wilco kicks my ass.

hawkeye 06-27-2004 01:18 PM

*cries*

Sierra was the company that introduced me to gaming.

excuse me whilst I go and light a candle...

Paq 06-27-2004 06:14 PM

how can anyone forget Phantasmagoria??????

best
game
ever

and didnt' they do leisure suit larry??

Stompy 06-27-2004 08:12 PM

Well, it's not like they're dropping off the face of the planet. I do believe they were acquired by another company. They'll still be around, just in a different form :)

Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude is still due out relatively soon.
