rome: total war

every screen i see of it, it just looks better and better. and while i am a fan of roman warfare, im a bigger fan of dark-age style (like viking invasion), this looks so intense. Looks to have better non battle stuff, which im looking forward to. The "non combat" stuff was kinda limited in previous installments.

I mean, territories etc should actually have involvement/importance outside of tactical/military stuff. I'd like to see more buildings possible that are just simply "building" stuff, that increase your glory/population/loyalty etc etc etc. Near the end of the game in previous installments, you'd have nearly every building built and couldn't go anywhere, and it didn't add up to anything. So i'd really love to see more non-combat stuff, because they just about nailed combat and large sized battles.

I'd also like to see more influence from surrounding countries onto the ones you are attacking. Things like supply lines, attacking from different directions (i.e. one army attacks from the north, one from the south, and it shows up like this on the battlefield)

maybe having a choice of sieges, like, striaght up destroy the castle/invade siege, or a wait out and starve them siege.

Yea, but im totally pumped for Rome. Elephants, castles, you name it.

Mephisto2 06-22-2004 03:57 PM

I absolutely loved Medieval Total War and am very much looking forward to RTW also. Any idea of ETA?

Mr Mephisto

docbungle 06-22-2004 09:29 PM

Not to mention...you can light pigs on fire and set them loose! This is going to rule!

Ace_O_Spades 06-22-2004 09:42 PM

Hrothgar 06-23-2004 01:58 AM

The sreen shots I've seen look very impressive.

whocarz 06-23-2004 09:13 AM

I have a raging hardon for this game. I enjoyed Shogun and love M:TW (hell, I'm STILL playing that game on a regular basis). This looks to be even better. I can't wait.

bookerV 06-23-2004 09:43 AM

I've had Shogun sitting around for a long time; I got frustrated in the second scenerio with the army running away from mine and never being able to complete it so I gave up on it. I take its worth playing on.

Tusko 06-23-2004 12:52 PM

that video is mind blowing. holy god. i think i need a new computer, and ive got an ati 9600, 512rm, 2ghz.

Stare At The Sun 06-23-2004 01:35 PM

Damn...what do you need to run that new hotness?

NeverBorn 06-25-2004 11:55 AM

I was a HUGE fan of Shogun: Total War, and what I played of Medieval I thought it was great. Those Total War series really do hit good.

Mortified 06-27-2004 07:49 PM

I got into playing Shogun: Total War because at the time I was watching a lot of the old samurai movies. I liked the battles part, but I had a harder time taking over territories and keeping them. Is Medieval pretty much the same, just a different era?

Tusko 06-28-2004 12:36 PM

yep, but much more in depth.

portwineboy 07-26-2004 05:32 PM

The new program on History Channel, "Decisive Battles", is using the Rome: Total War engine to demonstrate the tactics used. I just saw Hannibal kick some ass with elephants and I have to say, the graphics look amazing.

You should check out this program if you are interested in the game. They spend a lot of time using the game engine.

Seaver 08-05-2004 11:18 PM

The ONLY thing I wish Total War would implement would be a setting for improving the infrastructure.

Say like you could click on a merchantile setting, and every X turns it automatically upgrades the mines/trading posts based on the resources/trade availability of the region.

Or the inquisitors/priests could be set to go on their own around your territories where needed.

I felt that there was just so very much to do it was more often than not more annoying than worthwhile, which kinda takes attention away from the outstanding parts of the game.

Though I will definately be buying R:TW

Carno 08-06-2004 12:13 AM

Yeah, the show "Decisive Battles" is awesome. I actually just finished watching it. This episode was about Alexander the Great and his victories in Persia.

dauvin 08-15-2004 11:43 PM

I just watched Thermopylae episode, and maaan. I seriously cannot wait for this game.

I've played the heck out of Medieval: TW, albeit more of the overview then the battles.

In fact, I think I'll go install MTW now...

Oh, and while I'm posting, does anyone know the specifics of the Multiplayer aspect of RTW? I was/am hoping soo much for a mode where you and a buddy (or more people) can play like a whole campaign, map and building units and all. The battles are cool, but for me the fun is in running the world =D.

whocarz 08-16-2004 12:17 AM

One of the better mods for M:TW is Hellenic Total War. Go here to get it: www.hellenictotalwar.com

It's a pretty good total conversion. All new units, new campaign map, factions, historical scenarios, etc. Turns it into a game about Ancient Greece. They have both Thermopylae and Marathon (as seen on Decisive Battles) in the historical battles.

Gabbyness 08-16-2004 04:33 AM

Would you gents recommend going out and getting M:TW these days or is it pretty dated? I seem to have completely skipped that game.

Carno 08-16-2004 10:46 AM

Nah, I'd pick it up. It's really cheap right now so why not? You'll enjoy it.

I'd buy it but I'd have to turn the graphics way down :(

portwineboy 08-16-2004 04:45 PM

I second the M:TW advice. Buy it. Great game. I lose interest in games pretty quickly but I've never lost interest in this. Sometimes I'll even skip the battles and just play it strategically letting the computer decide the outcomes.

The graphics are still damn good and the gameplay is all that.

The only thing I don't like is that there really aren't good castle seiges. It looks like R:TW is going to fix this nicely.

[edit] dling Hellenic now. Sounds good, thanks for the tip! [/edit]

Gabbyness 08-17-2004 06:16 AM

Awesome, I will go pick it up later today.

dauvin 08-19-2004 07:56 PM

Guess what?!

Apparently, we get the Rome Total War demo on monday! (8/23)

I seriously cannot wait!!!!!

Seaver 08-20-2004 01:33 PM

**Help Please**

I d/l'ed Hellenictic War, but I have a problem. Everytime I run it it says wrong cd is inserted. So I cancel that, and try again and it pops wrong cd again. Then M:TW does the same thing, only re-installing the game and uninstalling HW makes M:TW work again. Can anyone help me?

whocarz 08-20-2004 11:48 PM

Hmm. It might be that you didn't patch your game up to the current version. Here's a link to get the patch: http://www.totalwar.com/community/download.htm

Also, the mod requires you to have Viking Invasion. If you don't yet have it, I'd recommend getting it anyway, as it gives you a new era and map to play on, as well as new units for the original campaign.

If you have all that, and it STILL doesn't work, go here: http://www.gameburnworld.com/dl/dl.p...FixedexeUK.rar This is a no-cd patch. The 4th mirror works. Just download it, and open the file (which is in .rar form, go here if you need winrar: www.rarlab.com/ ), then put the executable into your medieval folder and let it overwrite the old .exe.

Hope this helps.

Also, as an aside, I'd recommend making a fresh install of M:TW for H:TW since it replaces a lot of original game files. Thus, you can't play the regular game with H:TW installed.

Gabbyness 08-21-2004 03:17 PM

Wow, I just started playing M:TW, and it is badass. Anybody got any general tips for the game?

Seaver 08-21-2004 10:54 PM

Thanks Who, I dont have Viking Invasion so that's why it wouldnt work.

I think I'm just going to hold out for R:TW instead of wasting money on VI

Zeld2.0 08-21-2004 11:43 PM

Goods news - RTW demo comes out on the 23rd!

whocarz 08-22-2004 01:10 AM

Gabbyness, if you have some time on your hands, read these:
Beginners Guide
http://www.totalwar.org/strategy/mtwbg/index.html
Complete Unit Guide
http://www.totalwar.org/strategy/twug/index.html

They are very in depth and well written. M:TW is probably one of the most complex games I've ever run into and there is a hell of a lot to learn to be able to be good at it. Good luck.

Gabbyness 08-22-2004 11:13 AM

Hey man, thanks a ton, I will pour over these this afternoon, whew.

dauvin 08-23-2004 12:11 AM

Some general tips that work for me:
- Keep happiness around or over 120%, then still can AND do rebel even if its above 100%
- A priest in every province goes a loooooooooog way in keeping the happiness up.
- High taxes DO come at a price, the higher you set them, the more it seems your govenor gets bad traits (brigand, "unofficial" trader, Dominant trader, etc)
- Have only a few provinces set up to be your main unit producers, and have an eye towards provinces that give valor bonuses to certain unit types (Trebizond and trebizond archers)
- This comes into play late game, but its a HARD lesson to learn. Late in the game, if your king if in any way becomes unavailable (captured, cut off on an island) loyalty rates will most likely PLUMMET, leaving you with 60+ revolts and faction returns). So either make sure you dont send your king to an island or a battle he can't win. (Late game I just sit his ass in the capital, as you usually have plently of units and 1 more doesnt matter terribly much)
- Some VERY helpful key shortcuts: hold shift to get a color code of each provinces happiness, hold V to shade the seas in the same manner (green = good, you own, yellow = another present, but travel still possible, red = enemy ship, cannot go through) and then X and C cycle through various displays, showing and hiding buildings, people, armies, etc etc.
- If your bag is the battles, then ask someone else, cause I play the game for the overmap (unless its something rediculous like 2000 on 200).

peeweesbigbong 08-23-2004 03:32 PM

ROME TOTAL WAR DEMO OUT TODAY!!!!!!!!

Hanabal 08-23-2004 03:47 PM

played it, was cool. the unit control system seems more intuitive, the demo is pretty limited as the battle doesnt have millions of units, but its a good taste

dauvin 08-26-2004 01:37 AM

Theres an unofficial patch over at gamershell that apparently lets you play the demo as the romans.

whocarz 08-26-2004 01:41 AM

After playing the demo, I can say that I want this game.

dauvin 08-26-2004 01:43 AM

Ditto. I showed the demo to my roomate, and he was most impressed with the elephants, especially when they ran amok and killed the enemy general (after 99% of my forces had been slaughtered ((I accidentally put it on super hard difficulty)) ).

This has me almost as excited about HL2, and I'm about to piss my pants for HL2.
