Best Rpg game
What is your most treasured RPG game?
|
For me the one that started it all D&D. I played others but none ever seemed to quite capture that same thing. It always drew the largest gatherings as well.

Mine would have to be Cyberpunk 2020. Many a late night was had with a few friends in my basement crouched in the middle of a black room with dim lights throwing dice and experiencing what we all thought the dark future was going to be.

Damn Straight was a home made RPG...
Won't give the name! I played a few flavours of RPG since then AD&D, Warhammer (easy names). But they did not compare to the game I played earlier... PS: this game was 100% original. I have forwarded this to that person, I may have been wrong :) |
I always liked Shadowrun for its setting.
But I think AD&D planescape was the most fun. |
Baldur's Gate II
|
D&D is always good for some laughs.
My favorite is Werewolf the Apocolypse. *Mean Growl* YES! Except that we have a couple of rule issues but what game doesn't. On Gameboy Advanced: Golden Sun all the way baby. |
Hey, someone said BGII...yeah. That was good, but long...the replay value goes down each time.
But definitely good. However, once you go to real D&D...you just can't go back... Well maybe you can... |
I love all the WoD series, but Werewolf holds a special place in my heart. Exalted is quickly usurping a place in my top list, I dunno something about that game just makes me giddy. I do also agree with hilburt, Shadowruns setting kicks ass, especially if you have Earthdawn and know the connections between the two.
|
Another vote for Shawdowrun here. Never played it much but I liked the system and setting more than any other tabletop game I've played. I played Palladium games the most but their system was retartedly complicated... D+D wasn't much better too.
|
This is very very tough poll. THere are so many RPG's that I like, but overall Final Fantasy VII is my favorite.
|
I have several that I've played with, and each is likeable for it's own reasons:
Swords and Arrows- The RPG system that some friends of mine developed and are marketing themselves. This is what got me hard into role playing, and it was always alot of fun to see what manner of wierd shit we would come up with. Dungeons and Dragons- The thing is huge. It has more possibilties than I ever know what to do with, but unfortunately that makes it too complicated if your DM is a rule-nazi. The White Wolf system- I haven't played most of them directly, just Demon: The Fallen and Vampire: The Masquerade. However, with a good GM it's pretty easy to incorporate in Mage and Werewolf as well, so it's all kinds of crazy fun. Plus it's fun to play the bad-guy once in awhile and see what you come up with. ;) |

Final Fantasy III
|
I'm more of a console RPG'er myself, but I played a little DnD when I was younger. And I played this rpg called Dragonstrike, it was kind of like HeroQuest. I liked Dragonstrike a lot though. My favorite console RPG is probably Final Fantasy 3, or Chrono Trigger.
|
Chrono Trigger
|
Grand Theft Auto III.
The term RPG is quite difficult to define (for me anyway), would any of you consider the Myst series and Blade Runner (the videogame) to be RPG's? |
I would probably have to go with Chrono Trigger. Akira Toriyama's artwork surrounded by a well told story made it the best RPG ever.
A close second would have to be Final Fantasy VII. It was the perfect mix of fantasy and technology, plus there were a lot of side quests that were just plain fun. |
Suviko, I recently picked up Nobilis too. The book is a work of art, but I never played it sadly. My buds were thinking about it though
|
Fallout 1 and 2 rocked my world. I never like those fantasy one like Baulder's Gate. The best RPG would have 2 be System Shock 2. That game scared the fucking shit outta me!

Chrono Trigger.

D&D was great... Althought I like Blood of Heroes better. Super hero... Modern age... just loads of fun.
BTW if anyone is in Indiana, let me know I'll be gaming D&D a lot this summer, if you live near me perhaps you could join in. Console wise? Chrono Trigger by far... but Golden Sun takes an easy second. |
Easily Phantasy Star on the sega master system.
|
No question about it: Fallout I & II!
|

For the most part, RPGs involve Char. Stats and Raising them, and Adventure Games are solving Puzzles in the form of an Adventure (persay). I've never played Blade Runner, so I have no clue on that one. My favorite RPG (as far as consoles go) would probaly be the usual Final Fantasy VI (Or 3 in USA) or Chrono Trigger |
Fallout 1&2 were good but my favorite BGII. I play other stuff then dig it out and play it again. I guess I will have to try Chrono Trigger.
|
You won't be disappointed with Chrono Trigger. On top of being the best RPG, it also has a sequel on Playstation 1. Chrono Cross, the sequel, is nearly as good as Chrono Trigger. I completely forgot to mention Chrono Cross, but it is an extremely high contender for best RPG ever. That game is amazing as well.

my favorite PNP (pencil and paper) RPG is of course D&D.
because it was my first RPG game and the one I have the most fondest memories of... IMHO, the best, most solid, well thought out, PNP RPG was Mythus aka Legendary Journeys by Gary Gygax (creator of D&D). He even stated in the introduction that D&D was really just an experiment/(trial and error) and that this game was what D&D should have been. Unfortunately he was sued by TSR (D&D) the company he got ousted from and they won, causing the game to be pulled from the shelves... It had the best skills and combat system I've yet to see. My favorite Computer RPG is a tie between the Myst Series and Asheron's Call. |
I'm surprised to see the number of posts for digital RPGs. For my money, it doesn't get any better than a late night of pizza, coke, and....
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Heroes Unlimited (and btw included the Robotech franchise in the same game system), and all of the other associated games that were created around it. This was a really advanced, hard core PnP rpg. |
Ive played Asherons call for a cple of years( could be a great rpg) but basically is only about lvl and exp now and most of the content needs your char to be a high level
|
even though alot of you think CS is lame, i thought so too, but now after a while i am getiing used to it again after playing others, its awesome!
|
Final Fantasy III or VII. I like them both so I can't decide.
|
Well i loved fallout as well, i also really love Final Fantasy Tactics for the PS1, and great news!!! its coming out for the GBA. i cant wait.
|
Nobilis is the most beautiful.
Unknown Armies has the most incredible setting. Godlike has the best system. CoNTINUUM is the most intelligent. Earth Dawn has the best fantasy world. Little Fears and Call of Cuthulu tie for best horror RPG. Overall though... I think I have to give the grand prize to Mage: The Ascension. It has the best of everything, and I've been playing it for so long it's very near and dear to my heart. |
I gotta go with Final Fantasy VII. And no, I did not get my name from Cloud. I love VII. I need to play it again now that I think about....hm....*Trundles off* :) How can you not dig the battle music for that game. Oh, and I never really got into any PNP RPGs, I tried DnD but, never got into it.
Final Fantasy VII or X for that matter, just becuase it was so well done. (Voice, graphics, etc.) Another one of my favorites was/is Suikoden II. And last but definatly not least Xenogears. |
FF VII
Shenmue Phantasy Star Online All very addictive... |
The best RPG I've played (and the most addictive) was Fallout 2. It's fantastic.
|
Chrono Trigger, and Earthbound for super nintendo. Anyone remember it? Those games were so cool....
|
My most treasured game is Secret of Mana for super nintendo, it was one of the first multiplayer RPG game i ever played
|
Shining Force all teh way baby ahh gotta luv the sega days :)
|
I always like the RPG where you played Marvel super heroes. There was this other one I think was called Rune Quest (or something close). I wish PNP RPG was still popular, that was fun to use the old imagination.
|
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, best RPG EVER!
|
Hmm. Fluff first, then Crunch.
PC - BGII for modern, Wasteland for classic. Console - GTA3 With the unimportant stuff outta the way... I am a PnP RPG nut. Currently in passionate lust with - "Adventure!" by White Wolf. It rocks so damn hard. Best thing they've put out, hands down. Lusting from afar - Mage. (Played in one friggin Mage game since I got a pre-release copy of First Ed. No one locally has the horsepower to run it, dammitall.) Beergoggling towards - Heroes Unlimited, TMNT, Rifts and all the rest of those Palladium games that I secretly dig but won't admit it unless I'm drunk. Love it like my Grandma - D&D, of course. It's the Gateway Drug that got us all into PnP. The "One book that I must have if I'm stuck on a desert island" - Hero System 5th Ed and a crap-tonne of d6's. Hero can do anything, and do it right. -- I am finishing a D&D 3E game set in Sword and Sorcery's (that's White Wolf) Scarred Lands setting. Best setting I've seen for D&D, hands down. Getting ready to run some beer and peanuts type chop-socky jung fu theatre next, using Palladium's Mystic China. Life is Short. Roll High. |
Right now im playing a dnd 3e Forgotten Realms campaing, a Spycraft campaign, and we just started X crawl which is really pretty fun its like dnd meets the WWF.
Moonduck i havent seen Mystic China but if you wanna do some hong kong kung fu theatre power gaming check out Feng Shui (assuming they still make it) thats what that game was all about. |
Well my fav paper would be D&D (its actually the only paper 1 ive played besides Riffs which wuz incredibly lame!)
Console would be BGII it wuz much better then the 1st! |
Heard about Feng Shui, but I REALLY have to be impressed with a game before I shell out the cash-ola.
Xcrawl is cool though. |
Diablo 2
earthbound is awesome and if you own it like i do its worth $60 or more ffvii |
best rpg game is the dragonquest series.
not as successful as FF but huge in japan. but i'd be a fool to forget wizardry |
Tabletop: I've done most of it. D&D, Earthdawn, TMNT, Superheroes Unlimited, Shadowrun, on and on. Right now we're big into Deadlands:Wasted West from Pinnacle Entertainment Group. PEG hasn't been doing so well lately, so all the Deadlands stuff is selling for real cheap, good time to get into it. It's post-apocalyptic, with guns and magic and melee. It's the closest I've seen to the spirit of Fallout.
Video game: That's really tough. I've got a soft spot for old school Might&Magic, and the old D&D games, but Fallout 2 was pretty incredible, as was BG2. Black Isle is fucking amazing. |
baldur's gate 1 and 2, and Morrowind had me literally absolutely hooked for about 3 months each, i could hardly think of anything else!
|
seems like there's a lot og RPG gamers here, I gotta question for ya-
which do you think is better and why - A class based system or a skills/ powers template system? (or any other system for that matter) |
Anyone mention Planescape: Torment?
That was a good RPG...lots of story and sides...And I mean lots. |
I loved Planescape: Torment. The overall story (and the depth of the dialogue trees) in that game make it better than many highly regarded novels, in my opinion.
It's too bad that the team that made Torment hasn't been able to create another game in its image. I'm not looking for a sequel, mind you, but Baldur's Gate II just wasn't the same kind of game. Maybe Lionheart will be it. Who knows? |
someone mentioned mythus, that game was real good. character generation would take ages..and you really got somebody that felt right. very deadly combat system though.
favourite game would definitely be DnD, have only just start getting into it again. after a few years break ( damn girlfriends ! ). done quite abit of cyberpunk2020, which was also cool. some other games, i played/runned a little...which were fun desperado's/it came from the late late late show/chill/mechwarrior |
I think the Class-based vs Skills-based depends on what genre you are running. In fantasy games, where roles are sharply defined by the tenets of the genre, class-based works fine. Most other genres function better in skill/template-based systems, IMO.
|
Panzer Dragoon Saga for the good ol Sega Saturn. Still hoping they make a true sequel for a next gen system. Yeah, Orta is cool and all, but it was the story that made Saga so great.
|
What is this Lionheart I hear speakage of? If it's anything like Planescape...That'd be cool...
I mean, you got experience for just asking people things...that makes ...sense! ...And is cool. Oh for a good RPG... And yeah, BGII wasn't anything like it...Though I played Ps:T after. |
Lionheart is being made by Reflexive/Interplay. Think Fallout, except in a medieval setting with what sounds to be a cool backstory with lots of history. It's been delayed a few times, and is now scheduled to be out in the fall.
|
Fallout 1 and 2 and Fallout:Tactics.
Fallout 3 (or some form of Fallout) is coming out this fall for the PS2. I'm looking forward to it. |
Definatly FF III (or IV i think in Japan). From that point on I pretty much played or am playing every (decent) RPG available.
|
Planescape: Torment
|
I like the Fallout Series also, I am playing through FOT again right now.
I also liked Phantasy Star and Shining in the Darkness. |
so many good rpg's =( but...there are alot of bad ones too....especially today. i have yet to find a good rpg since fft. well maybe nwn and elder scrolls III. i live for fft and ff7. i hate 8, 9, and 10 looks decent although im too cheap to buy a ps2 to play it.
as for some other good ones, id put chrono cross, star phantasy, star ocean!! =DDD and my favorite mmorpg UO (until dragon empires is release) |
Troublebot, the Fallout game that's coming out this fall (Fallout Enforcer) has about as much to do with Fallout 1 and 2 as Starship Troopers the movie had to do with Starship Troopers the book. All of the coverage I've seen indicate that Fallout Enforcer is most definitely NOT an RPG, and is a Fallout game in name only.
|
I guess since the majority of the games I play are RPG's, it'd be ok for me to post in this thread. Strife only briefly mentioned Xenogears, but failed to mention how truly fraggin' awesome it is. I've yet to see any other RPG with a deeper storyline. Its that what RPG's are about; storyline? You have FPS for mindless entertainment, and RTS if you're feeling in the mood to build an army to kick some ass, but if you wanna sit back and have an awesome story be told to you... well isn't that what RPG's are all about? I also like FF7, FF8 (3rd disk has the best story development), FF9 was ok (Stiltzkin rules!!), and FF10 (my friends says FF3 also kicks ass but I've yet to play it), I've played most of Chrono Trigger and it kicks ass (never had time to really finish it), Chrono Cross (although a bit weaker than Chrono Trigger, still pretty good), Parasite Eve (truly awesome, and finally a female lead!), I bought Parasite Eve 2 recently although I haven't played it yet, uhh... what else. Brave Fencer Musashi kicked too much ass, Tomba and Tomba 2 were pretty good. I'm currently playing Xenosaga Episode 1 and its damn good so far, and Kingdom Hearts is currently on my to-do list (I have the game, just haven't played it yet) Still, I'd have to say that Xenogears pwns all other RPG's.
|
1. FALLOUT. My nick should prove that I believe that much. (BIS)
2. BG2 +TOB 3. Blade Runner 4. Nomad Soul |
1. Betrayal at Krondor
2. Morrowind 3. Arcanum 4. Eye of the Beholder |
never really was into PnP RPGs.... i always sat in front of the TV for my RPGing goodness... so id have to say that EarthBound for the SNES was my favorite, and my vote for best
|
Ultima 7 - both parts.
Morrowind I've played and enjoyed lots of others, but those are the first ones that popped to mind. |
Gotta agree with Stiltzkin about Xenogears, no other game has sucked up so much of my time and made me like it. My first time through, I lost my save file about 25 hours in, I then put it aside to spend more time with Metal Gear Solid, which I also lost the save file for. Once I got back to where I had left off in Xenogears though, I couldn't stop. I didn't even mind that the second disc is 20 hours of slowly scrolling text and about 2 hours of gameplay.
Dragon Quest 5 + 6 are both excellent, never got to try 7 since my PS would freeze up when i tried to play it. And Final Fantasy Tactics provided me with tons of fun, can't wait for the sequel on GBA. Diablo 2 sucked up a lot of my time too, but I felt more like a Las Vegas slot machine zombie playing it, you know, click on the monsters, get the treasure, it's all crap, sell it, lather, rinse, repeat. |
