Battlefield 2 Announced

Quote:

Battlefield 2 to storm PCs in spring 2005
DICE reveals that the "next generation" of the Battlefield PC franchise will feature modern weapons and vehicles.

Today, in a Swedish-language press release, Digital Illusions CE (aka DICE) announced the successor to Battlefield 1942 and Battlefield Vietnam. Currently carrying the working title of Battlefield 2, the PC shooter will be published by Electronic Arts under an agreement signed last year.

"Battlefield 2 builds on a new technical platform which will take us into the next generation of PC games," said DICE CEO Patrick Söderlund. Söderlund also said players of the game would notice a "marked improvement" in graphics and gameplay.

Battlefield 2 will be a different product from Battlefield: Modern Combat, the PlayStation 2 title announced last week. However, both games will feature the same three superpowers--China, the United States, and the newly formed Middle Eastern Coalition. Each power will have its own set of modern weapons and vehicles. The American arsenal will include the M4 assault rifle with the M203 grenade launcher, the Abrams tank, the Apache helicopter, and the Humvee.

According to DICE, Battlefield 2 will be released in spring 2005. GameSpot will have more details on this game as they become available.

This looks to be extremely promising. Imagine Desert Combat made by professionals :D

Promising indeed...
Remember that the Desert Combat team (Trauma Studios) was contracted by DICE to work on a undisclosed project for $500k
So perhaps some of the work (modelling??) is done by the same team that brought us DC.

Can I pre-order yet? ;)

Lasereth 04-20-2004 03:02 AM

Yep, Trauma Team, the creators of DC are signed on with DICE right now. I predicted a few months ago that they were gonna help DICE with the newest Battlefield game, and I also predicted that it would take place up-to-date. Man, I nailed it on the head! :)

Had I been asked, I would've made the same guess, but only for a (commercial) mod/add-on to BF:Vietnam, not a separate game.
So I would've been a little off...
(if this is indeed the project they're contracted for. I haven't seen it confirmed anywhere)

Lasereth 04-20-2004 03:23 AM

My initial thoughts were DICE needing helicopter programming for Battlefield Vietnam, but then I figured that they can probably figure it out themselves (even though it is tough. The Trauma Team has ONE guy that does the Apache, Hind D, etc. programming and that's it...that's all he does :) ). Either way, this is really, really good news. The creators of my favorite FPS ever are now teamed up with the creators of a mod that has consumed hundreds and hundreds of my hours in the past year.

Now I just gotta start honing my skills for the next Battlefield! I can't let my Top 100 BF Player in the World status fall! It's time to play Battlefield religiously! Ha ha, it reminds me of when I first found out about DC. :)

Sounds good. I look forward to buying this bitch whenever it comes out.

Paradise Lost 04-20-2004 06:44 AM

I'm thinking, from reading that article, it's probably going to be a less-laggy
version of America's Army (cause who plays Singleplayer, really...)

And even though it's not coming out till '05, I still probably won't have any money
to buy it, will have to keep playing Day of Defeat and Counter-Strike for
my WW2 and Modern Era shoot'em ups...

If you've played Desert Combat, then you know it's an entirely different experience from America's Army. If Battlefield 2 is anything like Desert Combat, then they've got a formula to make it the best Battlefield yet.

Jumpin' Jehosophat, Lasereth told me this would happen about 5 months ago :) good call my young padawan

Great googly moogly.

Lasereth 04-20-2004 08:13 PM

You guys should read the IGN article!

The levels expand and shrink dynamically when players enter and exit the game. There's a new damage penetration physics system that allows for real-time damage on vehicles (and possibly environments!). This means that if you hit an M1A1 Abrams with a T72 shell, there'll be a huge fuckin shell crater on the tank (if it survived the blast).

EA is supporting a new player statistics factor that records every online game you play. Players move up the ranks, starting at Private and ending up at General (if you're that damn good...expect General Lasereth after it comes out everyone).

There's also a squad-tactics engine in play in Battlefield 2. If you play as a team, you can become a clan with a title due to teamwork. I agree with this 100%! There was something "magical" about running around a corner with a PKM Machine gun, seeing your teammate shout "take cover!" and launch a grenade from his grenade launcher attached to the AK-47. After the blast, you run in with the Heavy Assault PKM and attend to anyone else who requires your attention. Now EA Games is supporting this and DICE are making it a key factor in Battlefield 2. This sounds really damn good.

On top of the aformentioned features, players are now rewarded for actions other than kills and flags. DICE is incorporating a new point system that gives points for medics and engineers! That's right, if you run around refilling ammo, healing people, and repairing tanks, you get points for it. This is a GREAT idea. It really gives an incentive to be something other than the Heavy Assault Buffet of Death open 24 hours (thanks PA).

Those screenshots look nice, but the game really got interesting after I read the interview. I can't wait...only a year to go. :(

hu-man 04-21-2004 12:25 AM

Wow yes, those sound like great additions to the game, it seems they made it with balancing in mind, and that's just great. Can't wait!

Blankfore 04-21-2004 04:17 PM

Server with up to 100 people... now that is a Battlefield! I hope that it retains the quality we've seen from Trauma in the past.

jvwgtr 04-22-2004 03:19 AM

I can't wait!
Battlefield is without a doubt, my most favorite series ever.

Averett 04-22-2004 08:07 AM

Ooooh those screens look pretty.

Now I just have to get better....

charlesesl 04-22-2004 05:37 PM

I wonder if a clan have to stick to one side. That would really suck.

I'm sure they won't. Even though I favor the Opposition side over the Coalition side in Desert Combat...ha ha. I love the PKM and T72's too much to voluntarily go on Coalition.

Dizzet 04-26-2004 11:37 PM

Damn i just have to get this... And it was about time us who plays engineers could get some points for what we are doing...

Check out IGN's new movies! They look amazing. I can't wait for this! Actually, I can, because Battlefield Vietnam is holding me over quite well.

Awww shit...Col. Nutsack may just have to come out of retirement and start kicking some ass again!

I love when a good mod does well, both for the game and the team. It's even better when the actuall developer learns something from the mod. It shows how awesome gaming communities can be.

GakFace 05-13-2004 10:32 AM

Points for medics and engineers? Holy shit would my rankings Sky Rocket. I play a pretty good offensive, but I simply love playing engineer/support classes in my games. Points for repairs will ... just.... nice... yeah! :D

ChrisJericho 05-13-2004 04:20 PM

Hopefully in Battlefield 2 they don't put all those damn ads in the begining. God those are annoying.

What ads?

-Lasereth

GakFace 05-13-2004 10:33 PM

Ads? I don't remember ads.. and if there are ads, then you just use ASE and skip the whole idea of them. ;)

Lasereth, I thought your ingame name was... Lasereth. What name do you masquerade as?

Ads..

"EA Games.... CHALLENGE EVERYTHING"

"BF1942 is copyright by Digital Illusions"

Easy:
Right click on the shortcut to BF1942 and select properties->shortcut
in the 'target' box (where the location and name of the battlefield executable is located, enter +restart 1 after the text that is already there.
It should now skip the intro sequences.

ugh... very single time.

Every computer game ever made shows the developer and published before the game starts. :) Those aren't ads, it's simply showing the guys who spent their time on the game.

-Lasereth

GakFace 05-14-2004 02:33 AM

yep... just showing who particpated in the making of the game

Lasereth.. whats your DC Name? What's your Vietnam name?

Wow thx Silvy.

Lasereth I know those are the manufacturers of BF. It's just a waste of my time that I had to sit through their annoying ads everytime I start the game that I BOUGHT.

GakFace 05-14-2004 10:14 PM

I just looked up on BFTracks... Its merely the fact that you haven't been playing Conquest DC as you've been playing Vietnam out the ass... ;)

Lasereth 05-15-2004 05:56 AM

Yeah, BFTracks is pretty damn cool. I was ranked in between the 100th and 500th best Battlefield 1942 player in the world when I was in my Desert Combat craze. :) I'm on a Vietnam streak now, though! I can't wait until EA uses their official tracking system for Battlefield 2.

A new screenshot from our friends at IGN:

HOLY SHIT!!

Kodega 08-24-2004 08:43 PM

Does anyone know if this game is going to have iron sights? I really like iron sights, I feel they add a whole new level of immersion to games.

Lasereth 08-25-2004 04:23 AM

What's an iron sight?

-Lasereth

NoSoup 08-25-2004 05:41 AM

Iron Sights are sights that are attached directly to the gun, usually made of metal. Basically, looking down the barrel to aim without the aide of a floating dot or a scope.

you can see examples of Iron Sights in Joint Ops: Typhoon Rising or America's Army - other games may have them, but those are the only ones I know for sure do :D

Lasereth 08-25-2004 06:06 AM

Ohh..like Call of Duty! I think a few of the rifles in BF 1942 had iron sights. I don't dislike them, but I don't really require them either. Let's just say that I can kick ass with any sights!

-Lasereth

aarchaon 08-25-2004 06:51 AM

Lets just hope that Battlefield 2 doesn't turn out to have huge gameplay flaws like Battlefield VIetnam does. Anyone who plays Vietnam online will know the frustration of having helicopters hover around your base and not having a way of killing them. :o
