New to FPS. What are your suggestions?
Since I can remember, Ive always hated the genre. For some reason, whenever I played a FPS, I would get dizzy after like 1 hour of playtime. Now, I decided to give UT 2004 a chance after all the hype and the positive reviews and I must say the game is focking great!! For some strange reason, this game doesnt make me feel dizzy in the slightest. Its just great. Maybe Im gonna start enjoying that kind of game from now on. But there are so many of them I just wouldnt know where to start. What are your recommendations? Just so you know, except for UT 2004, the last FPS I remember playing was golden eye. And I didnt even play the single player game, just the multiplayer with some friends so I know nothing about all the FPS that ive been missing all these years. I heard that far cry and pandora tomorow are good. Im considering them but I dont know. I want a game where I dont have to worry about managing bullets and shit. I just want to shoot stuff like in UT 2004, so nothing to complicated. I remember trying rainbow six: rogue spear a few years ago. Goddamn, I hated it. Couldnt understand shit. So pandora tomorrow being a tom clancy's game, I just dont know if I could enjoy it. Waiting for suggestions!

pandora tommorrow is a stealth game, so if you're into that type of thing it shouldn't be a problem. The only first person mode is in multiplayer, if you play as a merc.
If you're into the single player experience of FPS, then I'd highly reccomend Far Cry - although it's pretty demanding as far as computer specs. |
Dude...both Splinter Cell games are out of this universe fantastic - Regardless of what genres you like.

I'd recommend Serious Sam for some mindless shooting. Lots of monsters, no ammo management, and I think only cooperative mode (i.e. no deathmatch, only humans vs. monsters) Other than that: the Quake series, or try something a little different: BattleField: 1942/Vietnam where you can shoot/fly/drive for strategic goals in multiplayer battles. (These 2 are also not very mindless, you have to manage your ammo somewhat, and there are higher objectives than Kill count) I's say Serious Sam or UT2004, Far Cry (which is a little bit less mindless than UT2004, little more ammo management, stealth, etc.) |
Battlefield 1942 and the Desert Combat Mod.
Half-Life and the Counter-Strike Mod. |
If PAINKILLER is anything like it's demo, it'll be right up your alley, hordes of hellspawn waiting for you to lay the holy smackdown, no story, big action, mindless fun.
Oh, and Far Cry is LOADED with action, and can be quite difficult at times, regardless if you own a PC and are into gaming, you need this game. |
I know you said you didn't like Rogue Spear, so I'm sort of hesitant to say it... but I think you should try Rainbow6. It's a much simpler, easier version of the same game. For single player, you can plan all the tactics out for the entire mission, with multiple firegroups and objectives... or you can go at it lone wolf style and just try to kill everyone. That's how I played it until I got into the multiplayer, and I immensely enjoyed it.
And unfortunately for you, most FPS games today you have to worry about managing bullets. After you get used to not holding the trigger down while you run around looking for enemies, though, it's really not that bad. If you aim, you can kill enemies in one hit (usually), and if you don't aim as well, it usually only takes 3 or so hits. As for other games... the Unreal/Unreal Tournament series you mentioned (run and shoot), Quake (along the same lines), Far Cry (lots of shooting, quite difficult at first)... basically, what everyone else has said. Also, I don't know if this interests you, but you may want to try some of the MechWarrior series. I *think* they qualify as FPS games, but you are a giant walking robot shooting other giant walking robots, instead of people (or aliens or whatnot). Pretty fun as multiplayer games. |
Far Cry is good stuff, as long as you have like a 9600 Pro or GeForce FX 5600 or better, 2.0GHz CPU and at least 512MB of RAM. I also second the Desert Combat suggestion. There's also Return to Castle Wolfenstein with the free multiplayer expansion pack, Call of Duty, and the Serious Sam games.

UT/UT2004 for mindless fun
Battlefield 1942 / Vietnam / Desert Combat ... (About 300 other titles) ... FarCry is decent if you want to experience a very good looking, but still very average FPS. (Which runs perfectly fine on my GF4-Ti4600 & AMD 2500Barton) |
Splinter Cell isn't a FPS :p I highly recommend Far Cry and UT2k4.
|
My recommendations are:
Desert Combat, Battlefield Vietnam, all UT games, Far Cry, CS. In that order. |
Buy the ORIGINAL Half Life, this is a REAL FPS, if you could play only one FPS this is the one. There is very little ammo conservation involved on normal mode and the storyline is very well written. Sure its about 6 years old now but this game is still the benchmark by which all other single player FPS campaigns should be measured by.

Get Half-Life then download CounterStrike for free!!!
|
Splinter Cell(s) and the Rainbow Six series. (even the old ones are good!) and my favorite for the most realistic sim Ghost Recon.

HALO is pretty point and click, and good looking.
|
I'll second Halo, haven't played the PC version, but if your computer is good enough to show it at least as well as the x-box you're in for a treat.
|
Well...you didn't mention if you prefer story-driven games, or just flat-out deathmatch. For deathmatch, you have a great game in UT2004. For story driven games, sheesh, what's your preference? Military? Sci-fi? Horror?
Juju's top picks: 1. Half-Life. The one. The original. The game that put FPS on the map. 2. Clive Barker's Undying. Amazing horror. I got so sucked into this game my mous slipped outta my hand once from the sweat. Total immersion. I would lean towards Half-Life. Even though the game is a few years old, it is an amazing ride. The story was written by a known-good novelist, so the structure is solid, and the characters are believable. Give it a try. |
Halo
Call of a Duty Battlefield 1942 Medal of Honor (any version) James Bond 007: Everything or Nothing Far Cry |
if you want to test your new top of the line hardware, and for mindless fun, painkiller cant be beat.
far cry is my game of the moment, and im lovin it, but on the harder difficulties, its pretty stealthy and you have to conserve shots. halos a good game, i never got an xbox, and i waited for it to come out since 99 when it was meant to, now id called that delayed. but it was great. and bucket loads of shooting stuff. oh and call of duty, that game was awesome. the suspense, and the feel that you are in the middle of a war is great |
counter-strizike! ha..
ut2k4 great also, ive heard good things about far cry and i think im getting it! anyways, as for getting dizzy.. maybe its your refresh rate. i remember when i was a newwb and didnt really know much about refresh rates. after playing c-strike with for an hour with 60hz, pounding headache!!! |
The best FPS ever is Battlefield 1942 with the Desert Combat mod if ya ask me. Coming in a close second is Battlefield Vietnam, and then probably the UT games. CS is fun, but ya gotta be in to that type of FPS. I like longer matches, but whatever you're used to is fine!

Get Call of Duty and half-life!!
|
I would recommend FarCry, I bought it recently and am thoroughly enjoying both the single and multiplayer modes.
|
I'll throw a vote Halo's way. Best FPS I've played in a long ass time. Good story, lots of fun, and tons of action. Great game.
|
Quake 3 Arena!!!! Its old-school now, But nothin better than the BFG:crazy:
Ohh... Call of Duty takes some serious time from me at the moment. |
i like planetside as an FPS but sc is a good game i could concider the multiplayer fps
|
I'd suggest Alien vs. Predator 2, Halo, Battlefield 1942 (Desert Combat mod as well), Battlefield Vietnam, Unreal Tournament (all of 'em), and some Counter-Strike if you are into that sort of thing.
|
If you're looking for realism while still having a kickass time go for America's Army (free game, all online, really good gameplay) or Operation Flashpoint, especially with the Resistance mod. Not the newest, but definitely an amazing tactical shooter.
Also, be wary of Halo for PC. About half the people I've talked to, including myself, who've tried it on PC have had it run like crap on their computers, even relatively top o' the line ones. |
I agree with jujueye about Undying, the first half of that game should not be played in a dark room.
And for the greatest games ever, Tribes and Tribes 2 should be in any self respecting gamers collection |

Damn right, I keep them at arms reach at all times. I actually have 2 copies of T2 for when friends want to play along. Or when I am trying to convert ppl over to play it. :) Cannot wait for Tribes Vengence!!! |
Half-Life
And I cant believe no one has said this, but you MUST GET No One Lives Forever (probably $10) No One Lives Forever 2 (Probably $20-30) Fantastic games, very original, slick graphics, smooth gameplay, and best of all... loads of HUMOR! And don't bother with Contract Jack if you happen to see it, not a good game. |
Raven Shield! Fun co-op and multi- player... and easy on the system specs...
|
i would like to say for multiplayer, the best game i played, is soldier of fortune II, double helix. Its a great game when it comes to balancing, and only has 1 sniper rifle. The singleplayer sucks though ;)
If you play CTF or infiltratrion or demolishion its a very strategic game. But, this game isnt very hard to get to learn to begin with, but when you start playing PCW's and cups, it suddenly requires alot more. Its sort of a game you play when you have alot of friends who play it... i dunno... maybe not your thing |
I vote for Call of Duty.
And lets not forget Max Payne 2 :D |
I am saddened.
Today I bought Return to Castle Wolfenstein(Xbox) because it was priced low and rated high. I haven't seen anyone mention it at all, I may have missed it, but I don't think so. That disappoints me. I was hoping for some opinions on my game. I would hate to feel that I wasted my twenty bucks. So, what do you guys I think? |
