Most difficult game
Most difficult game?
I recently started playing Battletoads on my emulator and let me tell you, I think that is the hardest game I have ever played. I'm on the second to last level right now and I'd say I've probably used the Restore (I'm a cheater :p) function over 300 times. So what do you think |
Mmmm let's see, I'd go with either Contra or Ghosts 'n Goblins. That includes sequels too.
|
my vote is for the first few megaman games on the original gameboy
|
Holy hell. I used to play Battletoads way back in the day. Very cool game, but talk about frustration! Took forever to nail down the Turbo Tunnel level. My NES controllers took quite a beating from being thrown across the room.
|
You guys have pretty much covered it. Battletoads is insanely difficult, cheating or not, and Mega Man, well, Jesus H. Christ, that's probably as difficult and frustrating as it gets. I mean, every single last one of them are incredibly hard, especially the end bosses.
|
Ghosts and Goblins, word.
|
???? Those games were easy!!! (IMO) I could go through Contra over and over again till the score capped out - and Battletoads was loads of fun and not too difficult. You wanna find a hard game - try Athena for the NES. I remember wanting to hang my NES from a tree via a pad back in the day. Especially when you get the strongest sword and everytime you swing it you lose health, but you can't drop it either. Let me think of more difficult games and post them here later.
|
The original Heretic on the 2 hardest settings is dang near imposible, in an FPS where you can get killed in one hit, that's tough, and highly annoying
|
Heretic..........now that's a name I haven't heard in a long, long time
I thought I was the only person in the universe that played that smothering shit storm of a game hard as HELL |
Most difficult game period?
I can't remember the name of it, but there was this game, that if you beat it, you won a million dollars, and yes, i'm serious. |
Ninja Gaiden Tetrology
|
MDK 2 had some nasty parts in it, to name something more recent.
I tended to avoid games that became frustratingly difficult. Mario 2 was pretty hard for me, but I was kinda young when it came out. |
For me it was a very hard adventure game called the Hobbit on the ZX Spectrum. Even through you could only type in 20 words or so, I still never managed to complete it.
|
Turbo Tunnel + ghosts and goblins = unrelenting rage at 7
|
Devil May Cry on dante must die mode. Every boss battle I have to fight atleast more than 30 times to beat them.
|
You've revived my horrendous memories of Turbo Tunnel, perhaps the defining frustration of my childhood.
Yeah, it's hard. |
i'd say pong, i can never beat the computer
|
Far Cry made my cry like a bitch but I perservered and clocked the sexy beast and can't wait to go back in and try a harder difficulty setting.
|
before i understood what i was doing in Final Fantasy 8, i found it very difficult... but after i figured it out it got better.
i've heard that rainbow 6 (i think thats the name) is difficult... but i haven't played that yet. |
Can you say Everquest
|
nethack gets my vote
|
the hardest game I've ever played is probably either Driver (last mission anyone?) and STUNTMAN. Stuntman for PS2 will raise your blood pressure.
|
The Hardest RECENT game, would have to be Ninja Gaiden on the Xbox. Believe me, i'm crap and i died to the first boss like several times.
|
I agree with STUNTMAN for ps2. I almost broke my controller playing that game.
|
The 7th Saga, an RPG for SNES.
I don't recall too many games being hard, just tedious. Like with the Mega Man games, you pretty much had to be Dr. Wily's castle in one go because you couldn't save in the middle. That's pretty frustrating because you'll be almost at the end and completely run out of lives.. only to find you gotta do it all over again. Recent games.. GTA series (3 & VC) were kinda difficult at times. Someone mentioned Devil May Cry.. that game was pretty tough, even on normal. I remember getting my ass slammed by that huge ass spider OVER AND OVER AND OVER. Took me forever to kill that damn thing. The part I ultimatley got stuck on was that gigantic hawk.. damn that thing is tough. |
Personally, I think the definition of a "hard" game can be debated. For early games, being "hard" meant one of several things:
1) It was just really long - when levels are 2d / simplistic to program, they could just make hundreds of them if they wanted. 2) Tricky situations - mostly, situations where you had to either spend hours and hours trying everything, or where you had to buy the strategy guide in order to know what to do. You know the games that I'm talking about *ahem*Myst*ahem* 3) Timing skill - situations where you had to time things perfectly or you'd end up in a lava pit, or any other number of horrors. If I missed some, please forgive me. Modern games seem to have thrown out a lot of these "necessities" for games to be hard, especially 1 and 2. I find that modern games (say, when they started to be 3d and/or online multiplayer and it took much more effort to create a level design) tend to be hard for different reasons. There are still situations where timing is required, but I find that most difficulties lie in strategy, most notably the endless possibilities for strategy, especially in RTS / RPG games, and the occasional FPS. Personally, I like the modern version of "hard" games better than the "hard" games of the past, which just lead me to frusteration and early replacement of controllers. As for the hardest modern game I've played - I'd definately have to say Starcraft. The single player wasn't hard, but the multiplayer certaintly was, especially against really good players. The controls were easy and the concepts behind the game easy to grasp, but strategy was endless. That's the kind of hard that's addictive and encourages you to play more as opposed to smashing the CD into little bits. I played this game for 5 years :) |
Ghosts N Goblins.
Kid Icarus. Driver. Original Pitfall. Captain Goodyear. |
Ecco the Dolphin
|
Very true on Starcraft and other RTS games. Good call.
The single player campaigns are ridiculously easy, but when you actually play head to head against another person, someone who can think and isn't machine AI, you NEED to know how to balance between managing your resources, your army, multiple bases, etc. while facing whatever strategy/style of play he throws at you. |
Halo on Legendary is pretty fucking hard. Got stuck on Truth & Reconciliation. Can't beat it.
|
That's the fuckin truth. Man, Halo on Heroic can be a ballbuster, especially on levels like Truth and Reconciliation and Assault on Control Room. My God! Those levels are long as shit.
|
Soldier of Fortune 2 on the hard settings makes me want to put my fist through the computer screen
|
My friend & I played Halo on Legendary on XBox (Co-op) and we managed to get past Truth & Reconciliation. It took so many attempts.
Currently playing Heroic on my own on PC, it's still quite hard but nothing compared to Legendary. |

LOL. Alternate as meatshields. That's rich.

For myself, the hardest game that hasn't been mentioned would be a fucking ten way tie between all ten games on Interplay's Anniversary disk. Wasteland(precursor to Fallout), Dragon Wars, The Fellowship of the Ring(FUCKING NAZGUL), Star Trek, etc, etc etc. That disk was wrong and evil. |
I remember the first time I played Serious Sam 2... wave after wave after wave of enemies just kept coming. I'd run outta ammo on one gun, switch to another, drain that one, switch to another.... etc....
I actually felt like I was out of breath after finishing some of those levels. |
I think a lot of games are easy the only hard one was I think the Ninja Gaiden game.
|
Shinobi was a bitch on Sega and Ghost and Goblins was just too much for a 7yr back in the day
|
Marble madness for NES !!!
|
Homeworld was very hard.
Starcraft campaigns very much so. um...Black and White just because I bever really knew how to play. |
Nethack is by far the hardest game in existence.
|
The original Ninja Gaiden's for NES were ridiculous.
Put me down for some of those side-scrolling shooters like R-type. |
DAMN some of these bring back serious memories. I'd have to say some of the damnable and frustrating games are those that just go on forever and ever and ever and ever from back in the day. However, one game that I don't think has been mentioned, but I must for sure point out as a frustratingly difficult damn game was SPY HUNTER on NES!!!!!!!!!!!! That FUCKING GAME. When you died you had to restart SO DAMN far back.... oh my, it was frustrating.
ANother was Ninja Gaiden. I got to a point, that I could find no way to get past. My friend and I played all night long and just had to turn it off after staring at the same place for 3 hours. I got so good at the first several levels I could beat them untouched. Then, I'd just have to turn it off cause I couldn't get past this one spot. .... I should pull that game out now, 20 years later and kick its ass!!!! |
the only game i could never complete was Project IGI.
I pulled a lot of hair out playing that. |
Ninja Gaiden games for NES
|
I've been playing GTA3 all this week in an attempt to beat it (all the missions) since I never really got around to it... and to add to my earlier post, this game is pure EVIL.
Games get frustrating at times, but I think this tops them all. I've never yelled at a game so much in my life like I have this week with this game.. definitely THE MOST difficult/frustrating game I've played in a while. One mission in particular that I had me pissed beyond belief was the "Kingdom Come" mission you get from King Courtney. It's the one where you go to this secluded parking lot of sorts, and these 3 vans keep pumping out these suicide bomber guys, and the goal is to destroy the 3 vans. Even with full health/armor, ONE hit from them will waste you. To top it off, they run faster than you. Took me 2 hours to finally get it, and it was pretty much by accident. ...and the rampages are just nuts. Some of 'em are easy, like when they give you a bazooka and tell you to blow up 15 cars in 1 minute, 30 seconds. Others are just whacked out, such as killing 30 triads in (forget the time, but it's not much) with JUST an Uzi. That shit's damn near impossible. |
ghouls and ghost and Maximo was quite tough.... Magican Lord on the NeoGeo was pretty damn hard to...
Any of you had the prevliege to play this title? (magician lord) |
Umm, dumb question, but can you possibly find a screenshot of ye old magician lord, I *MAY* have played that game, but have trouble remembering if I was playing the game you're talking about, or something entirely different. But from the name of it, I think it's a game that I played on Neo Geo and you walked around as a Mage blasting shit, but it was harder than crap to get through anything.
Maybe I'm just totally off base, but the game I was talking about was incredibly frustrating. |
Yeah, that is the one. That system was some bucks ! That game rocked. Although, very tricky at times.
|
Missile Command anyone? Especially on the old Atari with the controller that you need lumberjack forearms to operate. The thing about playing this game was that it made you realize just how freakin scary nuclear war really was. "Sure," you think, "I can handle a few incoming ICBMs." Next thing you know, you've just got the one city and the one base left, and all you can think is "Everyone I know and love is going to be incinerated. Oh f*ck oh f*ck oh f*ck!!"
|
Boy and His Blob if you ever played throuh the whole thing!
|
Ninja Gaiden.
-Lasereth |
Dark Savior for the sega saturn there was a silver castle that had an obsticle course of sorts before you actually got there and at this one part your on a tiny square block and you have to hop onto another tiny square block thats impossible to see and slighty out from where you are. i dont remember how many days i played and tried that bastard of a course. to this day ive never beaten that game although i would of kept playing it if the sega hadnt of been destroyed by my brother spilling coke all over the laser =/
|
All the NES, SNES, Genesis, Sega Master, Turbo Gfx, ect. games that are considered 'hard' is all about figuring out patterns. Once you do, it's a cinch.
real difficult games for me were those that were made buggy. Even if I had the right solution, the game would crash, or the programming would loop itself around and made it literally impossible to move on with the game. Surely nothing can be more difficult then impossible. |
The hardest game I remember playing was SwordQuest for the Atari. Maybe it was because I was young and didnt' full understand what I was supposed to be doing. But to date that's the hardest game I can remember playing.
|
Does anybody remember the Jaws game on the OG Nintendo? Now that was a fuckin hard game. That and Top Gun. If I never see another one of those systems for the rest of my life, I will die a happy man.
|
Gargoyle's Quest on the Game Boy. I completed it once all the way through relatively easily and loved it, so started playing again, but have been unable to complete it ever since.
It had bad ass music though. |
Z, an rts from 96/97...
|
I beat both the side scrolling Ninja Gaiden games for the NES as well as the new Ninja Gaiden for the Xbox. But by far the hardest game I've ever completed was the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for the NES. I had to record it on my VCR to learn the levels. It wasn't even that great of a game...I just had to nail it though.
|
TMNT was hard.. I'm assuming you're talking about the first one and not the Arcade Game.
I hated that underwater level with the seaweed .. ugh that used to piss me off so bad. |
Any of the Ninja Gaiden's for the NES.

DROD (Deadly Rooms of Death) for PC. You can find it available for a free download in a version called Caravel DROD.
HARDEST PUZZLE GAME EVER After a few weeks of off/on playtime, I've only made it to the 6th level (out of I think 25). It just keeps getting harder and harder. |

Nope, I played it too. I must'a been weird because I actually liked it ;) I always found Thexder for the Apple IIgs to be harder than hell. The first level was a piece of cake. The first half of the second level was a piece of cake. The second half of the second level kicked my ass. I got through it ONCE in something like 5 years of off and on trying. And that one time, I was killed almost immediately in level 3. Still, an awesome game. |
I never completed Lulu (very old game)
the riddles at each level were just too difficult *sigh |

I would have to say Zombie Nation for Nintendo
|
Hmmm, hardest game ever?
Only game I wasn't able to finish was this old one on the IIgs wherein you had to program this little robot to do things by designing the damn chips inside him. You had a variety of logic gates to use and each chip had 8 input/output tabs. The input/output tabs could be connected to motors, to move him, and sensors, to provide input. You had to build each chip from scratch, or use ones you had built earlier, nested inside new ones. For one puzzle, I used over 400 logic gates in around 30 chips, heh. One puzzle, you had to program him to make it through a maze where the walls were invisible and you couldn't enter, you had to be in a different room where you could see the maze, and hopefully get it to finish it on it's own. If I remember correctly, he had to process over 150 different steps to make it through the damn thing, heh. Wish I could find a version to play now, as this was back in '84 or '85 while I was in middle school. Played it on the computer in the library. That was a blast to play, though. :) Anyone have any clue what it was called? |
battletoads, bar NONE. i don't care what anyone says battletoads was ranked hardest by about every single magazine that reviewed it.
Hell, even wtih the game genie, you couldn't beat some levels w/out HOURS of practice...\ One other game thatw as hard as hell: Werewolf..the levels were LONG, there were only 5, no save points, and the controlls were backwards from normal. A was attack and B was jump...talk about freaking HHHAAARRRDDD |
Quote:
I remember that, i just don't remember the name of hte game and the contest was over by the time i bought it. |
Any FPS on a console where you're forced to use a controller to play is for me, impossible.
Keyboard + Mouse all the way :D --jaded |
Farcry
Try farcry on the hardest level, gawd! The bad guys dont cheat, they play smart! You will not beat this game on hardest level before mastering every weapon, in the game, and using major tactics.
