Sid Meier

I cannot absolutely stress this enough. He is one of the world greatest game developer. You've may have heard this many times from game reviewers but take it from me, HE. IS. THE. MAN. Period.

I remember when I used to play Sid Meier's Alpha centauri game for hours and hours without taking a single break. The game was absolutely the best in its catelogy of gaming. Civilization is striking similar to Alpha Centauri, although Civilization was released before AC. The game will allow you to test all kind of scenario and tinker with technologies and history to any way you want to with limitation of course. You're not god right?

But I lost the game and I have Alien Crossfire but I still need AC and now I find myself really wanting to get AC and start going hours without a break.

I never felt like this with other games, not even Unreal Tournament or Quake. SM:AC and SM:Civilization is truely one of the best game ever. In short, Sid Meier is one of the greats in the gaming industry.

Have you ever felt like this with other games?

cheerios 01-30-2004 12:01 PM

juan got me addicted to Alpha Centauri our... freshman? year. It was BAD for awhile... It's a fun game, and i couldn't even explain why :)

other things i get hooked on: WC3, Zelda Windwaker, and Diablo 2...

mrquackers 01-30-2004 12:01 PM

Sid's an amazing developer, but the last time I talked with him was when he was giving me a one-on-one demo for Sid Meier's SimGolf.

As ashamed as I am to say this... I damn near nodded off. The game was far from his best - and his presentation was so monotonous that it lulled me into unconsciousness.

That said, I'll be bugging him to show me Pirates later this year.

Ace_O_Spades 01-30-2004 12:43 PM

Man i LOVED sim golf! I played that game for hours and hours and hours....

I have some great stories about Alpha Centauri, like having my neighbour allied with me then nuking him! HA

teach them to trust me in the virtual world.

I loved how it gave you so many options, like winning via becoming the head of the council, or winning due to conquest.

So much fun with AC...

I still want to get Civ 3, but i cant poney up the dough

japhyryder 01-30-2004 02:01 PM

I have always loved Sid, I think I have almost all of his games, I am currently still play the original RR Tycoon, it is one of the best. (pretty disappointed in 3)

nanofever 01-30-2004 04:00 PM

Since AlienCross is no-longer being produced and Firaxis basically said "good luck finding a copy" ,theunderdogs.com have a version of it along with hundreds of other abandonware titles.

*mods if abandonware is considered warez here please delete my comment*

oldbob 01-30-2004 11:23 PM

Ladies and gentlemen, if I could get serious for a moment... Huns. What's up with that?
Seriously though, RR Tycoon and Civ are hands down two of the best pc/console games I've ever played.
Although I did get sucked into Baldur's Gate once for a month or so.

Civ 3 is a major step back from AC, no custom units, no advanced diplomacy options, very similar factions, no "story" ala the fungal blooms in AC, ect. Stick with AC and you will be a lot happier.

BuddyHawks 01-31-2004 02:31 AM

I used to be addicted to Diablo 2 LOD. Now it's Warcraft 3 TFT.
Alpha Centauri is a good game, the only real turned based game I've gotten into.

Arc101 01-31-2004 10:03 AM

I've have spent far too much time playing Civ II. It's a great game, and something that you can always come ack to years later.

charlesesl 01-31-2004 08:40 PM

civ was ok, but alpha centeory was great.
I remember one time I used too many nukes which caused global warming. The see level was rising and all of my land cities were being floaded. So I proposed to the counsle to build a solar shield only to have all of the factions reject my proposal. Guess that was the price i have to pay for waging war on every other faction.

Thats why you wait till you have enough planetbusters for every city over 5 on the map.

The only thing that sucked about it was that you had to wait up to 300 years to get enough...by then you'd probably have discovered technology that would bring you to the final stage of evolution...

Sun Tzu 01-31-2004 11:05 PM

I just got CIV3 and AC. Im used to Age of Empires 2, Empire Earth, and Rise of Nations.

Compared to those both the Sid Ms games seemed really complicated, and to complex. It seems from what everyone is saying its worth sticking out the learning period to get into the playing, so Ill give them another chance.

five different ways to win

muptile races

fun turn based game in space

Vaultboy 02-01-2004 09:52 PM

Ac was fun at first. but then it became boring. Civ 3 was even worse. It starts out better than AC did, but AC kept me involved for longer. And like Cyberstorm, it has little replay value. Wit hthe exception of X-com, I think it is a general thing about Turn-based games for me. I'm too dyed-in-the wool RPG to find other games interesting.

djtestudo 02-01-2004 09:55 PM

Civ III is my favorite computer game ever. I always come back to it.

Mantus 02-02-2004 09:30 AM

I am hooked on Civilization III...cant....stop...playing...must go play now!

NeverBorn 02-02-2004 11:41 AM

Genius..nuff said.

bundy 02-02-2004 09:32 PM

i'm just trying to imagine how much time i've devoted to Sid Meier over the years.

Pirates, RR Tycoon, CivI-III, Alpha Centauri... man thats a hell of a lot of hours spent in front of a screen...

but i loved every second.

Sid Meier is a great developer, but he did not do Alpha Centauri. All he did was lend his name to it.

Alpha Centauri was done by his protege, Brian Reynolds. His most recent contribution was Rise of Nations, which is also brilliant, though a different genre.

Alpha Centauri is one of the great games of all times. It is a true shame that the terms of Brian's departure from FireAxis means that we ill probably never see a sequel.

jobu 02-05-2004 11:36 AM

I can't stop playing Civ III. It has to be one of the most addicting games I have ever played.

portwineboy 02-05-2004 07:40 PM

I'm sort of jonesing for AC. Does it play under XP does anyone know?

I loved the first Civ but I guess you had to be a gamer back then to truely appreciate it. There was nothing like it when it came out. I lost an entire week. I called my office and told them a grandmother died (no lie) and played and played.

Reynolds got it right with AC and I felt like I was playing a continuation of my great Civ triumphs.

Call to Power was horrid and as I understand it was the big drama in the gaming world back in the day. Sid wasn't involved or something.

Civ 3 is good just not great. I like it and return to it often, esp. on my laptop, but I was hoping for an (if you live in the great state of Georgia please close your eyes) evolutionary leap over AC.

It was better than MOO3 though. That is a labour of love.

Where oh where has my dear Harpoon 4 gone? Oh where oh where can it be?

Yeah, AC was a real masterpiece. Civ III is a good game, actually a very good game, but personally, I don't think it comes close to AC. Reynolds really hit that one out of the park.

Sid. Is a god.. THE gaming god. I read a great article by him on Ironman gaming.. Great stuff. I would love to have the chance to meet him..

I have a CD of Crossfire.. makes things easy

Just out of the curiousity...did you get it working without the original AC?

Sun Tzu 02-09-2004 08:21 AM

I've attempted getting into both Civ 3 and AC, but Im about to give up on them. I see the potential; but frankly theres to much detail for my taste. Thats why I get into Age of Empires, Rise of Nations, etc. The playing is more straightforward; but still with a civ play. I do understand whatthere is to like about Sid's games I just dont have the patience to read the amount of background to get anywhere in the games.

feelgood 02-09-2004 08:55 AM

Well, some people like straight forward gaming. Some like in-depth gaming.

AoE, Rise of nation, Wolfenstein, Quake, Unreal Tournaments are straight forward.

AC, Civilization, Mechwarrior (That's on a fine line of Straight forward gaming and not so straight) etc.

bt8624 02-09-2004 08:51 PM

Yeah i still mess with Alpha Centauri, and I have his Gettysburg....
His games are great...you can play them for hours on end.

cyclone 02-09-2004 09:14 PM

I love him

Sun Tzu 02-10-2004 09:57 AM

Ofcourse the fact I cant seem to survive for very long may have something to do with it.

Q: In Civ3 if Im building mines on spots with gold on them and make roads to my cities I should be getting wealth right? Theres no effect.

djtestudo 02-10-2004 03:33 PM

You only get the wealth if you have citizens working those spots.

lyxo 02-10-2004 08:53 PM

nobody liked colonization?

feelgood 02-10-2004 08:56 PM

Apparently Colonization is too much of a hassle these days...everyone pretty much just wants to rush into war and use nuclear weapons whenever possible...

Think Bush...

Randerolf 02-10-2004 10:59 PM

I love Sid.

I'd jsut like to point out that the propper apriviation for the beloved game is SMAC not AC, for obvious reasons. :)

Sid has taken up so many hours of my life. It's a fair trade though.

Slacks_01 02-12-2004 01:09 AM

why did he make civ3 so hard, i can't beat the crazy levels

Used to play? I still play AC for hours and hours.

The Final Fantasy games used to hook me this way but the latest ones i've found just... lacking somehow.

Cordachine007 02-13-2004 12:12 PM

It has been said that Sid Meier's is the Steven Spielberg of video games...I disagree...I say that Steven Spielberg is the Sid Meier's of movies. Sid is by far the best developer ever. I use to wake up at 400am in the morning ever day before school to Play CIV I. It was like i was hooked on it like a drug and couldn't get off. The only other game that I played even half as much was C&C Red Alert when it came out. In my life of gaming, Sid owns more hours of my gaming than all other games put together!!!! nuf said

Mantus 02-13-2004 03:55 PM

By your opinions is Alpha Centauri better then Civ III?

VF19 02-13-2004 09:03 PM

I love Civ3, I should install it, it runs really fast on low end machines. I should also get the expansions, how are they?
I think there is an online expansion and like Conquests.
Anyone got them?
