Maximo vs. Army of Zin
Has anyone played this game yet?
It is a PS2 platformer in a medieval setting. It is also a sequel, but from what I understand the original game was released 2 years ago, and I haven't played it. I am at a "void" right now in my PS2 gaming, and while I patiently await this year's crop of baseball games, I think a game like this might fill the void nicely. Has anyone played this game? What are your thoughts/comments/review? Thanks. |
Electronic Gaming Monthly seemed to hate it, but Playstation Magazine gave it VERY good reviews. IGN gave it well above average reviews as well. I'd break out my EGM to see why they didn't rate it well, but it's in my dorm, and I'm not in my dorm. :(

If this one is anything like the first game EGM might have hated b/c the game isn't exactly what you'd call easy. Save points are few and far between. Its like those old school games that make you work for it and make you damn glad when you finally beat that certain part you where stuck on. The first one was good, I'll rent this later this week.

Meh, I played the first Maximo and it got old, very old. Hack. Slash. Hack. Slash. I probably won't bother with this one.

Somewhere said this is the heir apparent to Ghouls and ghosts, I think that might just be because of the difficulty.

I've had this for a few days now, and I can say it's quite a bit easier than the first one. The difficulty didn't start kicking in until about 1/3 of the way through (as far as I'm concerned, anyway) and a few other factors that contributed to the first game's difficulty have been adjusted:
Your shield won't break anymore. You don't have to pay to save in this game, and can in fact save at any time, although you still have to restart your current stage. Checkpoints are more numerous than they used to be, too. Grim will resurrect you for only one Death Coin each time, instead of boosting the price each time you die. However, the souls you need to collect in order to earn said coins are harder to come by in this game. Maximo can save himself from near-miss jumps by catching the cliff-side with his sword, meaning fewer deaths by pitfall. However, because you have this safety move now, the designers put in lots more dangerous jumps.:) I personally loved the first game. I like that frenzy that comes from being completely surrounded and just going apeshit to defend yourself. This one is really good, even though it loses some charm points for not being as closely related to Ghosts 'n Goblins. The Zin are cool, but don't have the personality of the skeleton warriors in the first one. Plus, it would be nice to see Maximo run into other G&G characters like Arthur or Firebrand the Gargoyle, for old time's sake. |
I had the first one, and its fucking hard, i couldnt beat the first boss. although i gave up very quick......but for some reason, i didnt feel like going back and trying.... i hope the second one is good, because i did enjoy the first for a while.
