best way to chat during PC games?
I want to use a mic and headset to taunt my buddies whilst I kick their butts at various PC games played over the internet. They want to do the same thing.
A long time ago we used Roger Wilco for this. It had the right idea, but kind of sucked. So what program(s) should we use now that we are all grown up with fast machines and DSL connections? Surely there must be something better than the old Roger Wilco. |
The last one I used was Team Speak, and it was pretty good. Definately better then Roger Wilco is/was.
http://www.teamspeak.org/ I believe that's the site I got it from. Been a few months since I used it last, but it was good then anyway. |
I still use Roger Wilco and it works fine for 2 or 3 people. I have heard many like Teamspeak though, so give it a try.
games should include this
I've typically found Teamspeak to be a bit better than RW. Just seems to have less problems over all. Recently I've tried Ventrilo a bit, its a lot like teamspeak but has a few more features. They should all work though, its just a matter of getting all your buddies to use mics heh.

Roger Wilco is fine if there is only going to be less than 10 people using it at any one time. It's easier to set up and maintain than TeamSpeak and uses less resources so it's easier on those who have a slower connection/system. Also, TeamSpeak is not available for the Mac so if you have any friends using one they are SOL.
TeamSpeak is more versitile though and offers a lot more features. If you need a good voice chat for a large Clan, this is the way to go. The ability to set up seperate channels on the same connection alone is invaluable. It allows the entire clan to seamlessly switch channels with a press of a button and communicate with each other even if they are playing on seperate game severs. |
I used to Battlecom ..but now Ventriol seems to be a very stable system
http://www.ventrilo.com/ works very well, you need a server though.
Im using ventrilo now, but it is a resource hog. Set it for push to talk, or tell everyone to quit breathing.
i've tried ventrillo and roger vilco and they're both all right. i dont like running clients while i'm running a game though.
c-strike has a voice built in so it serves my needs. |
Anything built in to a game is worth it since it wont suck up mad resources. I personally just type it out when im hiding...shrt hnd wrks grt (short hand works great)
I've used Teamspeek mostly. I was pleased with it.
Slick, smooth and didnt take up too much resources. Works in Linux too. |
Teamspeak is the best way to go all the way. I used it playing planetside it was great.
I have always run my slower laptop as a RW server for me and my buddies. we never really ran into problems, but we never worried about having lots of people on.
duuude its all about vent and cs, lol! a bunch of people i know use vent in their clans, i joined their vent server once, it has really low ping and it worker really well with counter strike open!
I use both Teamspeak and Ventrilo.
Ive tested them all, Ventrilo is by far the highest quality and easiest to use. I use it for CS, ET, just plain chatting, or w/e. Its easily the best.
when me and my friends would play internet games we would conference call on speaker phone
ghetto but still effective |
www.teamspeak.org or www.ventrilo.com are your best bet I use both of them and I have to say they both work great
we have had over 300 members of our gaming squad (www.sghq.com) on teamspeak at once without ANY problems. it is highly recommended
We use telephones and headsets. No CPU or network overhead. Old tech, but it works.

Go teamspeak. I'm lucky enough at work to have an IT guy who also games. He keeps a teamspeak server here at work. :) That way nobody has to run extra server cycles.
