long retired from EQ1 and with barely enough time these days to rip off an occasional game of madden (3 minute 1/4's), i have heard that verant plans to releast EQ2 soon. any retired EQ players planning on playing? if so what are you looking forward to, with regards to new features and changes. anything for old EQ fans to get excited about?

I will never, ever have anything to do with anything that has the word Everquest in it. Ever.

No.. for two reasons..

1) My PC won't be able to run it.

2) I don't need to start that addiction up again. I'm perfectly content being an average student. I don't need EQ to drag me down.

I will never again pay for another SOE game. Blizzard is a much better company, with a better development process.

screw blizzard.. i walked through walmart with WC3 and FT in my hands then tossed them away..

after what ive see on all the others.. diablo1, diablo2 and LoD, all the other WC and SC.. their company bothers with to many cheaters.. way to many.. and all they do is ban accounts or lock cdkeys.. all the fools have to do is spam a hack site to steal accounts cdkeys or just go buy another copy or .. sigh write down the cdkey with out buying it..


at least with Everquest the 6 months i played it i never say a single cheater

oh dont get me wrong.. i thing bnet has a good thing going.. but thier top game peps quit.. there goes the future.. unless they pull in more peps..

but i still cant get over the fact that i cant play with anyone online with out someone mucking up the games.. bnets repsonse is.. dont play public game.. lol if i didnt want to play public id stick with single player.. oh well..

but WC3 ive watched a friend play it.. it was interesting.. but then i filter though the fan sites and see the dark side..where a clan has bought a ton of cdkeys and used them to up thier legit accounts progress and rank.. no i tell ya.. how is that fair..

plus they use crashers... and booters.. you get kicked they get a win you get a loss.. yeah real fun there..

now with WoW i might try that for a few months.. pay per play dont bother me.. as long as i get to play and such.

The problem with other blizzard games is that everything is done client side, so they can't really do all that much about cheating.

All of the data in WoW is going to be server side, plus people are actually going to be paying to play online. Cheating will be extremely scarce, if even at all.

Agreed. WoW is going to be nothing at all like Diablo, as you won't be able to effectively edit your stats or whatnot as the info will be on the server -- not your client.

Also, if you think there was no cheating in EQ, you simply were not looking. There was all sorts of item-dupe bug exploiting, plat doubling, vendor-abusing, and #zone exploiting on my old server. It wasn't as common as Diablo cheats, but, again, they are completely different types of games and are not even comparable.

Urgh.. No more MMORPGs for me. I've been through some tough withdrawals (UO, AC, M59, EQ, DAoC) and have finally grown above all that to see these games for what they really are - an excuse for developers to completely ignore content and ship a graphics engine + chat client instead.

Not to mention that they are a magnet for the worst kinds of online personalities.

Yeah, WoW won't be client side and allow cheating like b.net does. Remember, b.net is free, this won't be. Besides, like seretogis said, there was cheating in EQ too, just not as obvious/common. People on Vallon Zek got banned for using a zonehack to get into PoM long before they were actually able to.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot: ever hear of ShowEQ? :P

ShowEQ is an urban legend. Ooooh, only works on this magical "linux" platform that no one has ever proved conclusively exists, except in fuzzy photographs and out-of-focus video.

Yeah I'll definitely be looking into EQ2. I played EQ for a few years and I'm currently having a good time with SWG. The screenshots for WoW look very cartoony compared to the EQ2 screens. The gameplay for WoW ooks like a watered down version of EQ as well.

eesh, you would think i mentioned DaNang to a bunch of backflashing 'nam war vets. LOL!!! luckily, EQ came at a time when i had just gotten my bachelors and way before i began my masters. would just come home from work and log on for a few hours before i crashed out. never really got addicted, but did love the game. i read that the new EQ will be more tightly controlled, with locked encounters and mechanisms to prevent camping, raiding, twinking and powerleveling. could make for a more interesting game.

Check out the WoW gameplay movies compared to the EQ2 gameplay movies. In the WoW ones, there are dozens of characters on the screen and motion is fluid. In the EQ2 E3 trailer (which is twice the size of the WoW one, by the way) there are less than 10 characters in view at any point, and it is choppy as hell. Expect this to be the case in-game as well, just as it was with Luclin models on in a raid environment. SOE simply cannot design a tolerable graphics engine -- that combined with the fact that they are trying to use what looks like Poser models, is goign to lead to an incredibly laggy monotonous game. Even if WoW is crap, EQ2 will be crap on an exponentially higher level.

They're trying to show off the eye candy at E3 though. The appeal is that if you're in a regular group you can have all of the options turned on and enjoy the work they put into it. If you're in a raid, sure you need to turn graphics options down, but the gameplay environment of a raid is completely different and makes up for the lack of eye candy. SOE offers you awe-inspiring graphics in everyday encounters with more advanced game mechanics than WoW, or, during raids, lesser graphics more on par with WoW graphics, but gameplay unparalleled by anything.

Eh, in what way has SOE ever proven itself to be able to provide "unparalleled gameplay?" Everquest was a bore. Every expansion after Velious was just time-sink on top of time-sink. Planetside was a horribly laggy bore. From what I hear from EQ vets, SWG is an incomplete bore. How do you expect a company with this sort of track-record to suddenly learn what makes good gameplay, and not just slap in time-sinks in order to milk more money out of its customers?

If you check out Blizzard's previous games (and don't even bother with mentioning Diablo, that wasn't even Blizzard as it exists today), they are fun and graphically impressive at the time of release. I don't see how anyone can think that SOE has a better chance of making a fun and engaging mmorpg than Blizzard. SOE may have "experience" but it obviously has not paid off for them at all in their post-EQ games.

Guy I know ran ShowEQ on a cheap laptop running linux. It was neat, but not all that great. It was nice for finding rare spawns in big zones (and explained why said guy was known as the master of Trak's Teeth), but it didn't show what drops the mob had, just what it was carrying (useful enough with some mobs, of course).

I didn't see it as worth the hassle excepting the rare zones where it made monetary sense (again, TT). In raid situations, it only marginally helped, and you took the chance that a GM was watching your raid's chat channel. I was a Guide for a while and watched it happen. It's funny as hell to see someone say something in /guildsay and then act innoncent when you tell them to stop.

Say ShowDAoC too. It was damned near worthless though as DAoC only shows the client what it can sense within the "bubble". Your range is shown fine, but everything beyodn it is dark. Mythic was much more competent about their method of defeating packet sniffers. Damned shame that the game was boring...

I left EQ almost a year ago. I keep myself from going back by hitting my old guild's message boards once a month or so. The politics and bickering that hits the boards is enough to remind me why I quit.

Yeah some of their expansions were bad, but some were great. SWG is incomplete, they spent way too much time making the flags flap in the wind so there's absolutely no end-game content, but it can still be a good time if you've a good group willing to tackle some of the dungeons that do exist. I never played Planetside, I'm not a big FPS fan and it looked terrible anyway. I just think WoW will be shallow compared to EQ2, because I think SOE will look at the results of EQ and SWG and see that they need to spend more time on content like they did in EQ. WoW looks like EQ with different names for classes. I think that once the thrill of playing an MMO in Lordaeron, Azeroth et al. wears off, players will be left with a game that didn't really bring anything to the genre. SOE made this mistake with SWG, leaning too heavily on the excitement of playing in the Star Wars Universe, and not including the necessary content for an MMO. Hopefully they'll learn from it and do a top notch job on EQ2.

ShowEQ definetly does work and its quite helpful if you are in a competing guild that is contesting spawns n shit. But. Its just a game. Why cheat?

Everquest with the LDoN Expansion is great ... to make Adventures with friends is one of the most fun thing right now in the MMRPG market for me !

I have wasted waaaayyyyyyy too much of my life on EQ already. Hopefully I dont end up getting into EQ2. Dont get me wrong I really really enjoyed EQ, but the withdrawls are horrible, and I cant afford to quit my job right now, so I should prolly stay away.

On a side note, when I was living in San Diego I read in the papers that some guys from California went down into Tiajuana (sp?), rented a little house, hooked up a T1 connection, bought a couple machines, and hired a bunch of Mexicans to sit and play EQ for something like 20$ a week. Then they turned around and sold the plats and equip and characters on ebay. By the time EQ and ebay caught on the guys were long gone. I forgot how much money the supposedly made.

i'm very confident in WOW blizzard hasnt come out with a bad product yet, why would they start now. and WOW is using classes they have had in the WC3 storyline anyways, EQ copyed some other game's classes they copyed some other games classes yadda yadda, EQ didn't make up wizards and paly's and shadowknights and the like.

No game made up wizards, paly's, etc. Ever heard of Merlin? And even though Blizzard is making class names for their game, the classes willl still have the same functions (I.E. magic users, tanks, healers, etc.). EQ2 should be better then its predecessor, we can only hope.

EQ is the most boring game i ever played.
EQ2 is not for me.
SWG was the most disapointing. I am never going back to that one again.
I played UO since release. I always claimed that UO had more depth to its Fisherman profession than EQ had in total.
Right now i am playing DAoC, because that is where most of my MMORPG buddies went.
WoW looks interesting though....and Cheaters = Loosers , in the sense that if someone needs to cheat to have the nessecary advantage to win, they must be loosers from the outset. :D

after now 3 years of playing eq i have to say that is not that much the game that let me come back for me but the friends i have there .... and my gf is playing too , its a nice hobby to hunt monsters after work and chatt with nice people.

must....fight...addiction....

EverQuest stole about 3 years of my life. HELL no to this one. However I will be playing WoW. Blizzard knows how to rise above all the level treadmills and griefing thats still going to plague EQ2 despite amazing graphics.

Thanks I didn't say other games made up wizards :rolleyes: I said that they copied some other games classes. And I realize that they got the ideas from books and history. I was just saying EQ did not make up the classes.
