Best console game no one's ever heard of?

When I was college a friend had a TurboGrafx 16 and there was a game for it called Military Madness. It was an old-school, hex-based turn-based strategy game for domination of the moon, and it was THE most addictive thing ever. A sequel was released for the Playstation, called NECTARIS, and you can sometimes find it on Ebay. It's not too hard to find the ROM and a TG-16 emulator.

What are some other sleeper hits that few of us may know about?

Oh lord, ICO was one of the best games I've ever played. When it ended much too soon I just sat and watched the end credits in stunned awe. Great game.

Ico was a truely unique experience, the only game I've ever played where I had a real desire to save the princess, not just beat the game

Kagero was great, oringinal, and fun on the ps1 (not the sequel)

Carnage Heart was fun for a while, but was a bit too hard to really be ranked as one of the greats. ps1

Poy Poy-prehaps the greatest muli player game ever made imo, also ps1.

The original Legacy of Kain...was never sure if diablo came out before this or not, but either way. ps1

The Horde. God I loved this game. I would kill to be able to play this game without haveing to buy a Sega Saturn and track this piece of Kirk Cameron goodness down.

Devil Dice was awesome, they're coming out with a sequel called Bombastic in about a week. mmm rolling dice around as a little devil, who would think it could be so fun.

Word on Poy Poy. That game was the reason I bought the multitap.

it's not THAT rare, but Blazing Lazers (Gunhed in JP) on the TG16 is great.

And the newer school kids might not be hip to the brilliance that is River City Ransom, so i'll note that as well.

Great call burgerdog, I still play River City Ransom at least once a week. Also, while probably not a rarity, Every one of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms games have been amazing peices of work. Definitley an aquired taste, but if you love micromanagement with a story, then there is no better.

OK, I ran across this game one time about three or four years ago, and I've never forgotten it.

Has anyone else ever heard of The Unholy War? That game was awesome. Its kinda hard to explain. It always reminded me of chess kinda. You had this small army of different creatures, and you would try to take control of the board. Whenever you met up with your opponent, there would be a battle, a battle that you would actually fight. I can't remember much about it, but I loved it, and I never saw it again.

Anyone else played it?

The best game I've played that no one else did/heard of is easily Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem for Gamecube. Besides Metroid Prime, it's easily the best game out for it. Check it out on Gamecube, you won't be disappointed.

Comix Zone for the Sega Genesis - Easily one of my favourite Genesis games. Basically you play as a comic book artist trapped in his own comic book. It's a beat-em up type game with a good dose of originality.

It also came out for the PC too.

Yeah Unholy War is a lot of mad fun. Might remind you of chess if you played Archon way back when? It's essentialy that without the chess lol.

Thought of a couple more:

PS2-The Adventures of Cookies and Cream-not sure if this was popular or not, but my wife and I played it (it's 2 player co-op), and was one of the funnest things we'd done. Kinda reminded me of NES's Snake Rattle n Roll.

PS1-Return Fire-I challenge anyone to play this game and not think it's the best 1v1 fun ever. It's capture the flag crossed with squad based strategy, sorta, with over 100 maps I think. You have 4 each of helicopters, tanks, jeeps, and missile laucher vehicle thingies, plus preplaced turrets walls, etc. You must find and locate your opponents flag (there are decoys across the map, too) and bring it back to your base (only the jeep can carry the flag) Mad, wicked, fun.

Bombastic is gonna be a sequel to Devil Dice?! Sweet. That was a great puzzle game. I could play it all night, but I could also get non-gamers *cough*my girlfriend*cough* to play it, too.

I second Military Madness, too. There was a summer when I was about 12 that I was away from home and played the hell out of that.

And I've got one to add: Hexxagon. It was a shareware game from way back. I couldn't even remember the name, but this thread made me look it up. AND, I just found a Flash version of it too. Happy happy happy.

You're this guy standing on this platform made of cubes in the middle of empty space. Cubes tuble down the platform towards you, and your job (if I remember correctly) is to blow up all the cubes before they reach the end. Then there are special cubes, that will blow up in a radius, or can't be blown up. Oh, you also have to avoid being squished as you blow up the cubes. It doesn't sound very fun, but it is so damn addictive.

I'd say Terranigma for SNES, even though many people have heard about it. It beats Zelda anyday

Other good SNES games who never made it to the US or Europe are Secret of Mana 2 and Tales of Phantasia

Baseball Simulator 1000 for the NES. As a kid we were bored of Basesloaded, this game was the same except it had six different fields with different dimensions, about thirty different ultra powers, and you can even play a 162 game season. It also has a create a player mode, and this game was released back around 1989. You can give ratings to each of the players’ attributes, and you can assign a player’s ultra powers.

We thought it was cool for a crappy NES.

Most of the games that I love were pretty popular, but I'm going to have to agree with the guy that sad Shadowrun for genesis... It was definitely better than the SNES version, and it was one of my favorite RPG's for a long time. I had a huge obsession with it, I even made a website dedicated to it.

holy crap if i could find a copy of einhander i'd crap my pants,

but as shooters go i'd have to say that the anything made by (now-defunct) working designs like fighting force V and raycrisis.

also going way back, best crossover genre game ever: guardian legend for the NES. it's a shooter!! no it's a adventure title!! no it's a shooter!! i was so confused and happy

Super Street Puzzle Fight II Turbo (I think that’s the name) on the PS1 was one of my favorite games few heard of. I talked friend into playing it after I bugged him shitless. We plaid for, oh, five hours straight.

Einhander was one of the best shooters ever on the ps1. Vagrant story rocked, too; my third or forth fave game ever.

Beyond Oasis for the Genesis. It was an action/adventure game in the above-head perspective like Zelda. The bosses were huge and you could even do special attacks.

Zombies Ate My Neighbors was also one of those addictive 2-player games.
